Lady With The Dog DVD Based on the Chekhov short story of the same name, The Lady with the Dog (Dama s sobachkoy) is a forgotten masterpiece from a tense period during the Khrushchev thaw. Told with little dialogue and minimal action, this romantic drama is a bittersweet portrait of a doomed love affair between Dmitri, a bank official, and Anna, a well-to-do young woman. The two fall in love while on vacation in Yalta around the turn of the century, but because each is already married, they can only see one another once a year. Director Iosif Heifitz not only adapts the events of the Chekhov story but captures the legendary writer's restrained tone and atmosphere of desperation. Nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.

$10.29 Youth gangs took over the slums of Rio de Janiero during the 1960s and didn't relinquish their stronghold until the mid-1980s. Only a sucker wouldn't have turned to crime and this is exactly how naive teen Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues) views himself. His attempts in illegal activity fail as he finds potential victims too friendly. Equally unsuccessful in love, he regularly fails to lose his virginity. Blood spills throughout the streets of the Ciudad de Deus as gang leader Li'l Ze (Leandro Firmino da Hora) is challenged by local druglords and a gang of pre-teens known as the Runts. Rocket shoots all of this action with his weapon of choice, a camera.
Director Fernando Meirelles combines visual flashiness with dark history in telling the story of three decades of unrest in underground Rio de Janiero. Technically flawless, the Brazilian ...

$11.35 This fictionalized biopic chronicles the final years of opera meta-diva Maria Callas (Fanny Ardant), filling in the blank spots with a "what if" scenario. It's the late 1970s and Callas, once the greatest singer in opera, has lost her voice, been thrown over by Aristotle Onassis in favor of Jackie Kennedy, and now stomps around her apartment in a haze of pills and regret. But just when it seems all hope is lost, her former manager Larry (Jeremy Irons) hits on the plan to do an opera film of CARMEN, with Callas lip-synching her younger voice in the lead, thus preserving her stage presence for future generations. The trouble is that once Callas gets back in the limelight, her over-the-top artistic temperament threatens to destroy the entire project. What's more, Larry's gay lover (Jay Rodan) is throwing tantrums of his own.
Fanny Ardant is incredible as the tortured, egotistical diva and Joan Plowright lends some welcome warmth and wit as the British reporter who sets the plot in motion. As with many a Zeffirelli film, the cast is packed with beautiful people and the photography is elegant. The passages from CARMEN are a real highlight, with Callas's actual ...

In ancient Japan, people live side-by-side with mechanical human replicas, created by rogue inventors, which have suddenly and dangerously gone mad, leaving a remarkable trail of carnage in their wake. Desperate to avenge the killings and restore order, one of the inventors creates an especially powerful robot from the remains of a beautiful princess, who was murdered along with her friends by one of the androids. The mechanically enhanced princess (Aino Kishi) is equipped with 11 deadly weapons, and she's sent out to do battle alongside a human warrior who has a musical instrument so loud it can be used to destroy his ...

$82.69 Three films by Wim Wenders: LIGHTNING OVER WATER is a penetrating and touching film of the last days of cult American director Nicholas Ray, most well-known for REBEL WITHOUT CAUSE. The film follows the progress of death, for once really at work, in 35 mm and on video, in an inside/outside organic continuity. Wenders, and us with him, get used to the idea of death - that neither he who makes a movie nor he who looks at it are immortal. THE STATE OF THINGS is a highly autobiographical work concerning a shoestring movie producer and his ragtag crew. A TRICK OF THE LIGHT - This film by Wim Wenders ...
