Though the Smiths have been compiled numerous times, 2008's THE SOUND OF THE SMITHS is the first set to comprehensively survey the revered British college-rock band's impressive 1983-87 catalogue. Beginning with the restless "Hand in Glove," and proceeding in chronological order to spotlight other classic tracks such as the epic "How Soon Is Now?" and the achingly melancholic "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me," the lovingly remastered SOUND easily reinforces the Smiths' status as one of the all-time-great U.K. pop/rock bands, adeptly showcasing Morrissey's hyper-literate lyrics and emotive croon, as well as Johnny Marr's awe-inspiring and dynamic guitar work. The anthology, which benefits from the input of both key members, also makes room for lesser-known album selections such as "Still Ill" and "Barbarism Begins at Home," making SOUND much more than a mere singles collection.
Photographers: Stephen Wright; Kevin Cummins; Paul Slattery.Rolling Stone (p.95) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "Morrissey articulates both bleak romanticism and omni-deprecating humor, while Marr accompanies him with chiming, multilayered riffs." Mojo (Publisher) (p.118) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "With Marr's transports of melodic delight and the detailed complicities of Morrissey, songs such as 'William, It Was Really Nothing' and 'Sweet And Tender Hooligan' make for pop music of uncanny potency." Blender (Magazine) (p.67) - 4.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he most comprehensive survey yet of the Mancunians' brief, tear-stained blaze through the mid-'80s indie-pop firmament..." $38.19 The meat of the order here is definitely the first disc, TRAVELING WILBURYS, VOL. 1, a certified masterpiece with five legends at the top of their game. Sound Of The Smiths songs
$55.39 As the fourth Nuggets box from Rhino, LOVE IS THE SONG WE SING: SAN FRANCISCO FRANCISCO 1965-1970 is easily the most specific and idiosyncratic yet, a set devoted to a time and a place: namely the Bay Area that sowed the seeds of the Summer of Love in 1967. Released in conjunction with that 40th anniversary, LOVE IS THE SONG WE SING is surely a time capsule, but it may not be as much interest to those who lived through it as those who pine for the glory days of free love, hippies, and psychedelia. No less of an authority than legendary rock critic Greil Marcus noted ...

Sound Of The Smiths CD music
$25.89 Initially renowned as Bob Dylan's backing group, the Band emerged from the singer's shadow to proclaim a distinctive talent. Drawing upon a musical canon embracing soul, country, folk and rock `n' roll, the quintet created a unique sound that was quintessentially American. Its rustic qualities were enhanced by principle songwriter Robbie Robertson who created vistas suggestive of a pre-industrial age, and as such, captured the restlessness of the late 60s without the need for explicit manifestos. Expressive singing, sublime melodies and telepathic musicianship instils The Band with quality, but its adult themes and perspectives ensure an absolute timelessness. An all-time critics' favourite.
The Band's first album, Music from Big Pink, seemed to come out of nowhere, with its ramshackle musical blend and songs of rural tragedy. The Band, the group's second album, was a more deliberate and even more accomplished effort, ...
