Billy Wilder's adaptation of Samuel Taylor's romantic comedy stars Audrey Hepburn in the title role. The daughter of the chauffeur (John Willliams) of the wealthy Larabee family, she becomes infatuated with the rakish, younger brother David (William Holden), while spying on their lavish parties as a teenager. Her father sends her to school in Paris to forget her romantic angst, but upon her return, the now fashionable young woman has suddenly become irresistible to David. Since his father and older brother Linus (Humphrey Bogart), who runs the family business, have engineered his forthcoming marriage to a wealthy heiress (Martha Hyer), they attempt to derail Sabrina's romance with David. To cool his brother's ardor, Linus temporarily puts David out of commission and begins dating Sabrina simply to distract her, but of course it's he who becomes distracted. When David recovers from his injury and learns that Sabrina is now interested in her brother, the festivities begin. Hepburn, the ultimate ingenue, defines charm in this pleasant comic diversion. Cary Grant was the original choice instead of Humphrey Bogart for the role of Linus Larrabee.
The film features the song "Yes! We Have No Bananas" by songwriters Frank Silver and Irving Cohn.
Her Academy Award for Best Costume Design (Black & White) was Edith Head's sixth out of an eventual total of eight Oscars.
In 2001, Ernest Lehman received the first honorary Academy Award ever presented to a screenwriter. Sabrina Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) darrickth@myspace.com great old school movie if you like tear jerkers. Submitted by darrickahill (Houston, Texas,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Classic Hollwood Romantic Comedy The plotline is completely unbelievable BUT this will still pullat your heart strings and make you smile. Audrey Hepburn is winsome, Holden is charming and Bogart is Bogart. Escapism at it's best and very enjoyable. Submitted by michael (Queens, New York) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The original and best! The later re-make of this classic (with Julia Ormond / Harrison Ford / Greg Kinnear) comes close...maybe VERY close. Still, Audrey Hepburn always brought that special combination of innocence, charm, and wit that can't be duplicated. (That goes for pretty much anything she starred in.) This was one of the movies that helped keep Humphrey Bogart from being type-cast as the wise-cracking tough guy, and gave him a chance to shine as a gentleman and a person of character
(while still being vulnerable to human weakness). And how can you fault William Holden's performance, for that matter? A treasure of American Cinema, and highly recommended. Submitted by deebsfire (Bellingham, WA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sabrina My sister has been looking every where for
the original SABRINA with Audrey Hepburn.
I was so amazed when I came upon VIDEO
UNIVERSE, I am not sure how I did it, but it may have been thru Amazon.
Any way I am saving it for a Christmas present, if I can hold off that long, I am
so anxious to see how thrilled she will be
with it. Now I know where to come to look for videos. My sister is a collector of videos, so I am sure we will run across some more for me to look up.
Thanks again, I am really pleased,

A Cinderella story with sparkle and wit and sophistication. Acquiring Samuel Taylor's hit Broadway comedy "Sabrina Fair" for the movies, Billy Wilder cast the title role with Audrey Hepburn as the Long Island chauffeur's daughter, who ages from nineteen to twenty-one during the film, the title of which was abbreviated (except in Britain) to a mere "Sabrina". The twenty-four-year-old Hepburn's leading men were William Holden (thirty-six) as her employer's irresponsible "young" playboy son and Humphrey Bogart (fifty-five) as his soberly work-oriented older brother. Wilder had intended the latter role for Cary Grant (forty-nine), who declined to play a "stuffy businessman," so Bogart was a last minute replacement. Playwright Samuel Taylor collaborated with Wilder and Ernest Lehman on this adaptation of Taylor's play, which lost some subsidiary characters and gained others. And it was "opened up" to allow for the Parisian sequence where Sabrina grows from awkward teenager to a chic, sophisticated twenty-one, as she studies French cooking.
"Sabrina" uses the Cinderella theme of Taylor's long-running Broadway comedy. It's a Hollywood picture--wealthy characters, Long Island estate, Wall Street associations, Rolls Royce and Paris gowns. Wilder takes Taylor's play and spreads it out over the rich, luxurious area that was only suggested on the stage, thereby adding a great deal of atmosphere to it and endowing it with credibility. Slick wisecracks abound, and Wilder gleefully lets his audience know the outcome long before his screen characters perceive it. This is really Audrey's picture, since she has the title role and has come to it trailing her triumph from the previous year's "Roman Holiday". And indeed, she is wonderful in it--an actress of extraordinary range of sensitive and moving expressions within such a frail and slender frame. She is even more luminous as the daughter and pet of the servants' hall than she was as a princess. "Sabrina" is pure pleasure.
"Sabrina" was a commercial hit. Paramount Studios shrewdly capitalized on the fact that the film boasted a total of four Oscar winners--Bogart for "The African Queen," Hepburn for "Roman Holiday," Holden for Billy Wilder's "Stalag 17," and even Billy himself for "The Lost Weekend". The director, finally, was getting to be a kind of star. "Sabrina" was Billy Wilder's last film for Paramount--a good-bye present that brought in enough money to make up for the previous excursion into the lower depths of "Ace in the Hole" (1951). $15.79 Though she refuses Captain Wentworth (Rupert Penry-Jones) in her youth, Anne Elliot's (Sally Hawkins, LITTLE BRITAIN) love for her handsome but penniless suitor never dies. When he returns eight years later--a wealthy and high-ranking naval officer--she has the chance to set things right. While the two leads ably carry the film, the highlight is Anthony Head's (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) hilarious turn as Anne's snobby father. This Masterpiece Theatre production offers a splendid rendition of Jane Austen's final novel.
Anne Elliot fell deeply in love with the handsome young naval officer Frederick Wentworth at the age of nineteen. But with neither fortune nor rank to recommend him, Anne was persuaded to break off her engagement. Eight years later, Anne has lived to regret her decision. She never stopped loving Wentworth, and when he returns from sea with fortune and rank, she can only watch as every eligible young woman in the district falls at his feet.

$16.25 Andrew Davies, who scripted the beloved BBC miniseries PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, brings more of Jane Austen's work to the screen with this Masterpiece Theatre presentation of NORTHANGER ABBEY. In this gothic-tinged tale, Catherine Morland (Felicity Jones, MEADLOWLANDS) arrives at a centuries-old estate. But her creepy surroundings aren't nearly as intriguing as an attractive man named Henry Tilney (JJ Feild, THE SECRET LIFE OF MRS. BEETON) who lives there.

$14.99 BECOMING JANE is based on an incident in the life of the beloved writer Jane Austen, and follows the real-life romance that inspired her classic novels. Like many of her heroines, Jane (Anne Hathaway, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA) is bright, strong-willed, and unwilling to marry merely for money, even though her family is struggling financially. Though many of her friends wish her to pair up with the nephew of a rich woman (Maggie Smith, HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX), Jane wants something more. When she meets the Irish rogue Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND), she initially can't stand him, but their romance blooms, serving as the inspiration for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.
Director Julian Jarrold (KINKY BOOTS) is no stranger to literary fare. Though BECOMING JANE is only his second feature film, he directed several productions for British television, including GREAT EXPECTATIONS, CRIME AND PUNISHMENT, and WHITE TEETH. At times, BECOMING JANE feels exactly as it should: a long-lost Austen novel that's just been rediscovered. The themes and characters here seem familiar, as they've appeared in Austen's work many times. There's the devoted father, difficult mother, loving sister, and, of course, the charming young man with whom the protagonist initially clashes but later falls for. As Tom, McAvoy proves he deserves the attention he received for roles in THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND and STARTER FOR TEN. He's the perfect choice for a romantic lead in an Austen film, taking his place next to Matthew McFadyen in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and Hugh Grant in SENSE AND SENSIBILITY. As Austen, Hathaway exudes intelligence and energy, playing exactly the sort of woman who appeared in the writer's work. For those who can't wait for the next adaptation of Austen's work to arrive, BECOMING JANE is an engaging look at the writer's life and love.

$10.29 Life imitates art in this adaptation of Karen Joy Fowler's bestselling novel about a book group reading the work of Jane Austen. Each of the people in the group is at a different stage of life: there's Sylvia (Amy Brenneman), whose husband has just left her for another woman, and her daughter Allegra (Maggie Grace), who's looking for a woman herself. Bernadette (Kathy Baker) has six marriages under her belt, while Jocelyn's (Maria Bello) most significant relationship is with her dog. New to the group of friends are Prudie (Emily Blunt), a teacher who is unhappy with her marriage, and Grigg (Hugh Dancy), the group's only man--a sci-fi fan invited by Jocelyn to take Sylvia's mind off her failed marriage. As they make their way through Austen's novels, they discover that the writer's work is just as relevant in the 21st century as it was in the 19th. The group has its own Emma, and a sparring would-be couple bears striking resemblance to Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy.
THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB succeeds largely thanks to the strength of its cast. Bello is better known for dramatic roles in films such as THE COOLER and THE HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, but she does an excellent job with this film's lighter tone. As know-it-all Prudie, Blunt steals just as many scenes as she did in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. Though it might seem like a clubhouse with a "No Boys Allowed" sign, the men in the movie hold their own with the female cast. Jimmy Smits, Marc Blucas, and Kevin Zegers play supporting roles, but it's Dancy who deserves the most praise. As Griggs struggles to woo one of the women in the group, Dancy easily wins the heart of the audience with his geeky charm.
Five women and one man discuss the work of Jane Austen at monthly book club meetings in this $3.5 million-grossing movie, which stars Maria Bello, Emily Blunt and Hugh Dancy. Bonuses: commentary, featurettes, deleted scenes.

$15.15 PAL/Region 0. Recorded in 1985 at Copenhagen's Montmartre Jazzhus as a tribute to the late great Ben Webster, this excellent concert showcases pianist Jordan's first-class playing along with Clark Terry's humorous onstage presence. Resorting to a repertoire mostly consisting of Ellington standards, Jordan, Terry and their sidemen display a high spirited, swinging set. Best-known for his stint with Charlie Parker's classic 1947 quintet, superb Bop pianist Duke Jordan worked with Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons and Stan Getz during the '50s and made quite an impression by writing part of the soundtrack for the French movie Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Trumpeter Clark Terry has always been renowned for his joyful, swinging approach to music. A top-notch soloist with an unmistakable sound on his instrument, a very personal vocalist, and irrepressible humorist and an enthusiastic jazz educator. 10 tracks. 20th Century Fox.

$17.05 When an uptight, conservative young man becomes convinced the world is going to end, he decides to cut loose and have some fun--and some women--before it's too late. A coming-of-age comedy.
This genial Australian coming-of-age film is based on the experiences of its narrator, writer and director Bob Ellis. The first part of the film covers the difficulties teenaged Ken (Noah Thomas) has at a church summer camp run by the Seventh Day Adventists; he is not 'with the program,' and consistently asks heretical questions during prayer meetings. Also, he can't help keeping a watchful, admiring eye on a visiting preacher's pretty daughter. He gets to ditch his ultra-religious background when he goes to work at a university newspaper some six years later and, despite (or perhaps because of) his scruffy appearance, he finds himself attractive to girls. One legacy of his years at church is a pervading sense that the world may end soon, and when he insists that his new girlfriend drive him away from Sydney in her father's car because he anticipates nuclear war as a result of the Cuban Missile Crisis, it is the last straw in their relationship.
