On its second full-length album, Baltimore's droney post-punk ensemble Wilderness offers up another set of songs marked by stark, cavernous sonic landscapes inhabited by twisting guitar lines and deceptively simple rhythmic patterns. As on the self-titled debut, frontman James Johnson's PiL-ish yelp stands out as the band's calling card, particularly on the ominous, drifting opener, "The Blood Is on the Wall," and the chiming "Beautiful Alarms." Revealing the subtle influences of both the shoegaze and goth scenes, Wilderness crafts uncompromising indie-rock for open-minded listeners.
Having worked for a couple of years on creating their debut release, it would make sense to think that Wilderness' follow-up a year later could potentially suffer from sophomore slump syndrome -- similarity of sounds and songs, a general sense of stasis after having figured out a general blueprint. Vessel States doesn't get stuck in that rut entirely, but it is a bit of a consolidation of an approach, with the band's extremely mannered (and very intentionally so) take on post-punk-inspired atmospherics sounding more familiar but no less gripping at its best. The fact that "The Blood Is on the Wall" opens with one of James Johnson's most melodramatic vocals yet, swooping over an initially calm first half, is as much a statement of purpose as anything else, making the introduction of Will Goode's drums that much more monumental in impact. The first album from this band made up of Pretty Girls Make Graves and Blood Brothers members sounds, indeed, like an equal mixture of those bands' sounds. The insanity and vocal yelps of the Blood Brothers are tempered by the more straightforward punk-pop velocity of PGMG. Johnny Whitney's vocals screech and waver, giving the songs an alien energy despite the typical unintelligibility of his lyrics. "Highways of Gold" opens the record in a relatively comfortable vein, but elsewhere the band experiments with multiple styles, from the near-waltz of "Bonetrees and a Broken Heart" to the D.C. post-hardcore moves of "Jaguar Pirates." "Humans Evolve Into Skyscrapers" even flirts with hair metal and "Jump"-era Van Halen keyboard cheese, and on "My Organ Sounds Like...," Whitney channels his inner Prince.
Phoenixing from the ashes of the Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves, Johnny Whitney, Jay Clark, and Cody Votolato reinvent themselves as something completely new. While the Blood Brothers were straight up hardcore screamo and Pretty Girls were spiraling indie rock, Jaguar Love's tastes are broader and harder to define. There are the theatrics and bombast of glam (think Sweet), the circular meandering and aggression of post-rock (Mars Volta), the danceable rock of post-punk revival (Hot Hot Heat), and the fuzzed heaviness of alt metal (Wolfmother), combined with the classic arrangements of show tunes, doo wop, and waltzes. On its aptly titled 2008 outing, FLASHY, the Detroit-based dance-rock troupe commonly known as Electric Six unveils another raucous collection of gleefully hedonistic tunes. Blatantly referencing one of the key singles from its '03 debut, FIRE, the band offers up "Gay Bar Part Two," a lively, stomping number that sets the tone for FLASHY.
