| | Rolling Stones Still Life (American Concert 1981) CD (1982) Reissue; Remastered
To The Bone
$7.96 By the early '80s, the Rolling Stones were one of the last remaining groups leftover from the original "British Invasion" two decades prior. One of the main reasons for this was the Stones' ability to keep pace with the musical climate of the time, without losing any of their original blues-sleaze. Their 1982 live set (fourth overall) STILL LIFE, was taken from performances from their hugely successful U.S. tour a year before, when Mick, Keith and company headlined the biggest outdoor stadiums and vast arenas.
Although it lacks the youthful and unpredictable energy of their earlier concert albums (namely 1970's GET YER YA YA'S OUT), STILL LIFE showed that the Stones still had plenty of gas left in their tank 20 years down the road. Highlights include a cover of the Miracles' "Going to a Go Go" (an ...

| | Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Roxy & Elsewhere CD (1974) Remastered
To The Bone
$8.15 Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974.
It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording.
Delivering lengthy monologues both inbetween and during the songs, Zappa provides light-hearted contrast to the mulit-textured, typically sophisticated arrangements. For every "Son of Orange County" (an ambitious, difficult piece) there's a "Cheepnis" (wherein he details his fondness for cheesy horror films) or "Be-Bop Tango," where he brings audience members onstage to dance. Ever ...
| | Exodus Bonded By Blood CD (1985)
To The Bone
$7.85 Had it been released immediately after it was recorded in 1984, Exodus' Bonded by Blood might be regarded today alongside Metallica's Kill 'em All as one of the landmark albums responsible for launching the thrash metal wave. But by the time it finally hit the streets more than a year later due to numerous record company-related difficulties, the genre the band helped spawn had evolved at an alarming rate (again, largely thanks to the unstoppable Metallica) and Exodus were left to wonder what kind of impact they may have had without these setbacks. Opening with the mind-blowing power of title track, the band immediately pummels through a number of astounding thrashers, including "And Then There Were None" and, perhaps their best well-known track, "A Lesson in Violence" -- a veritable handbook for thrash etiquette. Though less enduring, "Metal Command" is one of the band's most fully realized compositions and leads the way into concert the fave "Piranha," which may sound a tad dated, or charmingly naïve depending on the listener. The same can be said for the remaining material, and while "No Love" could have done without its acoustic intro, the band closes strong with "Deliver Us to Evil" and the crushing intensity of "Strike of the Beast." The 1989 reissue on Combat Records adds a couple of live versions and drops the admittedly awful (but once again, endearingly so) original cover artwork, but there really was no reason to tweak this underground classic in ...
| | Vainio Vaisanen Vega Endless CD (1998)
To The Bone
$11.19 The first important thing to understand about Endless is that it has been credited to the names of Mika Vainio, Ilpo Väisänen, and Alan Vega, not Pan Sonic and Vega. The Scandinavian duo has constructed minimal techno songs. They may be full of clicks, glitches, and buzzes, but they still are songs, following a strongly rhythmic architecture. Ambient techno this is not, nor mere backgrounds for Suicide singer Vega to read his words over. His vocal delivery could be described as gripping or utterly annoying, depending solely on the listener's interest in spoken words. Although the technology has changed considerably, the synthesizers from the 1980s having been replaced by computer generated glitch electronica, Endless sounds a lot like Anne Clark's early albums, at least in spirit. The bleak atmospheres fit the tortured lyrics. This is a good collaboration where each ...
