(2 Customer Reviews)
Timing is everything, but it wasn't Robert Johnson's best friend. Sweeping out of the Rolling Stones' shopping list when they were searching for Mick Taylor's replacement, Johnson (whose very name should have landed him the job) was one of the hottest rock & roll guitarists of the mid-'70s, bluesy and bruising, street smart and sharp, and a gritty songwriter, too. But one glance at his debut album and you have him pegged for another new waver, just one more in that long line of quirky power poppers who emerged from the post-Costello '70s and were soundly dismissed on the spot. Which leaves Close Personal Friend in that awkward space somewhere between the classic it is and the bargain-bin regular it became. Too soulful for the skinny-tie brigade but too confusing for everyone who should have loved it, Close Personal Friend features ten stunning rockers that dance on the brittlest edge of American roots, and if any album of that era demands rediscovery, this is it. ~ Dave Thompson
Having auditioned for the slot made vacant by Mick Taylor, ROBERT JOHNSON at the age of 23 was in his opinion too young and too American to join The Rolling Stones. In 1974 he secured the lead guitar slot in the Who bass players JOHN ENTWISTLE'S OX where he stayed for the next three years. In 1978 the world was finally exposed to ROBERT JOHNSON solo artist whose two albums were released in UK on the Ensign Label (bonus album 'The Memphis Dmos' was released in 1980).He toured in support of 'Close Personal Friend' opening for amongst others The POLICE and The KNACK but 'bad vibes and bad management' doomed his band and albums to a premature fate. Crank up loud and enjoy.

Close Personal Friend
$9.29 Arguably the best album they ever made, America's sophomore effort is certainly the most varied. Though the overall sound is still dominated by folk-style strummed guitars, there's quite a bit of extra instrumentation--electric and acoustic pianos, banjos, and, in the almost rocked-out "Cornwall Blank," actual electric guitars for a change. The band's musical palate ...
| | Roger Daltrey One Of The Boys CD (1977) (Import) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered; United Kingdom
Close Personal Friend
$17.95 Roger Daltrey called on a wider circle of friends for his third album and came up with a more varied collection of songs, from Steve Gibbons' raucous title track to ex-Zombie Colin Blunstone's country-styled "Single Man's Dilemma." Daltrey also co-wrote three songs with producers David Courtney and Tony Meehan, and Beatle completists should note that Paul McCartney contributed a new song, "Giddy." But the best selections were Andy Pratt's "Avenging Annie," a stirring story-song (and minor U.S. chart entry), and Murray Head's plaintive ballad "Say It Ain't So, Joe," both of which Daltrey sang as effectively as he had any Who song. The backup band included such notables as Who bassist John Entwistle, Wings guitarist Jimmy McCulloch, keyboardist Rod Argent, and special guest guitarists Hank B. Marvin (of The Shadows), Alvin Lee (Ten Years After), Eric Clapton, Andy Fairweather-Low, and Mick Ronson. But Daltrey was never in danger of getting lost in the all-star session. Nevertheless, the album was not treated as a major release and found only modest commercial success. ~ William Ruhlmann

| | Tinsley Ellis Speak No Evil CD (2009)
Close Personal Friend
$14.95 Tinsley Ellis has worked hard since the early 1980s to establish himself on the contemporary blues scene. As a result, he has become one of the most consistent, and therefore quintessential, electric blues men. He's also a good songwriter in that he stretches the blues form as far as it will go, and occasionally he crosses into solid hard rock territory. On SPEAK NO EVIL, it seems as though Ellis has been listening to some of Robin Trower's early to mid-period records. And what seems to be at work on SPEAK NO EVIL is Ellis trying to push the blues form in a decidedly more rockist direction without losing its emotional feel. Check out the opening track, "Sunlight of Love" With its hard-driven ...
| | Paul Butterfield Original Lost Elektra Sessions CD (1995)
Close Personal Friend
$8.39 THE ORIGINAL LOST ELEKTRA SESSIONS stem from the Butterfield Blues Band's attempt to record their debut album. The tapes were scrapped and a whole new album was recorded.
The songs here, recorded in late 1964 before keyboardist Mark Naftalin joined up, were intended for the Butterfield Band's first album. However, they were junked at the last minute by producer Paul Rothchild, who felt they weren't technically up to snuff for reasons that remain unclear despite his liner note reminiscences. The tapes then proceeded to languish in Elektra's vaults for 30 years, at which point ...

| | Long John Baldry It Ain't Easy CD (1971) Bonus Tracks; England; Remastered
Close Personal Friend
$11.05 It Ain't Easy features a British blues/rock lineup befitting the man behind the Long John Baldry moniker. This album returns Baldry to a decidedly edgier and hipper audience, with a literal cast of all-stars on some of the more adventurous material he had covered to date. This is no doubt due, at least in part, to the involvement of rock superstars Rod Stewart and Elton John. (In fact, John confesses to have taken the last name in his stage moniker from Baldry's first.) Among their contributions to the project, Stewart and Elton divided the production tasks -- each taking a side of the original album. Immediately, Baldry sheds the MOR blue-eyed pop soul image. The backing band on Stewart's side include fellow Face and future Rolling Stone, ...

Close Personal Friend
$17.09 To followers of the early-'80s West Coast punk scene, few acts have greater import than the Dead Kennedys, and FRESH FRUIT FOR ROTTING VEGETABLES is their definitive work. Fueled by the hyperactive, paranoid rants of frontman Jello Biafra, the band lays out a blueprint for societal upheaval, preaching distrust of everything, and the eventual breakdown of the totalitarian police state in which we live. His disturbing world view is propelled by the guitar stylings of East Bay Ray, who replaced punk's stereotypical volume ...
