Prolific North Carolina indie rockers the Rosebuds return with the typically enchanting LIFE LIKE, a return to the shimmering guitar pop of their earliest releases following the more electronic 2007 release, NIGHT OF THE FURIES. Particular highlights include the churning "Cape Fear" and the dreamy, billowing "Border Guards." All 10 tracks are compelling, melodic, minor-key pop.
Recording information: Magic Dome, Raleigh, NC.
Personnel: Justin Vernon (guitar); Daniel Hart (violin); Matt McCaughan, Wesley Phillips (drums).
Audio Mixer: Chris Stamey.
Spin (p.100) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[M]esmerizing.....They use mopey melodies and nature imagery -- floods, dead foxes, elusive robins -- to evoke hearts near the breaking point." Magnet (pp.120-121) - "By drawing from their past and crafting intriguing sonic hybrids rather than self-consciously aiming for some dubious new turf, the Rosebuds have, accidentally or not, wound up with their most satisfying album yet." Paste (magazine) (p.62) - "Having delved into glossier synth-pop on NIGHT OF THE FURIES, The Rosebuds have returned with guitars cranked, reverb in the mix and a warmth and twirl in their arrangements that recall The Church." Life Like songs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the fact that this set was issued before by Repertoire, the Akarma version is definitive in that it features the original cover artwork in a heavy cardboard gatefold sleeve, and killer sound. This is a raw, immediate, overdriven, psychedelic blues record that offers an interesting historical counterpoint ...
| | Danny Kirwan Second Chapter CD (1975) With Book; Limited Edition; Digipak
Life Like album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from two different musical worlds. "Odds and Ends" is more lighthearted, the kind of music Paul McCartney toyed with on The White Album's "Rocky Raccoon." What Second Chapter immediately sets forth is the importance of Kirwan as a pop artist, and how, despite Fleetwood Mac's success after he left, his sounds could still have been beneficial to that supergroup. "Hot Summers Day" is a fine example of that, a beautiful song that could offset Buckingham's gritty ramblings. It would have ...

| | Doko Benjo CD (2008)
Life Like CD music
$11.49 A chilly night in November of 2004 found several members of the yet-to-be-formed Doko Benjo congregating for a few giggles. Cary picked up a guitar and casually strummed through several hits from his catalog of original tunes (which, at days end currently stands at 14,002). A voice from the crowd lamented that it was too bad CKP had no band to perform said songs with. \"Great Scott!\" he exclaimed (and later added 1.21 Jiggawats) \"Let\'s start a band!\". Practice began a few days later and the journey was underway...First on ...
