| | Poet Essence Krooked Change Smeered CD Poet Essence Discography of CDs
Those of you who read my Blog know the respect I have both for the poetry/performances of The Poet Esssence & for her personal work in the community. I've posted a couple of her poems here on my Blog. And in spite of what I might have implied in the past, she is not a "Slam poet;" she is a better performer than that. This night she performed some new work in addition to others we have heard before. "When a Baby Dies" will be on her new CD & is for Kathina Thomas, the young Albany girl killed by a stray bullet recently. "The Silent Talks" is on her CD Persuasively Seduced. She also did "Crooked Change Smeared" & "Nigga Speaks" (speak back!). "24 Hours" about trying to save a homeless family is on her CD 4For Seasons. She ended with the activist anthem "It's Not Just Words" (on this Blog), then got called back for an encore (an encore at a poetry reading!!) of "Classified Woman" (on 4For Seasons). When you see that she is performing someplace, clear your calendar & go -- tell her "Dan sent me." $9.79 Bill Cosby concluded his five-year (1964-1969) run with Warner Brothers -- which yielded no less than eight Top 40 spoken word comedy long-players -- with It's True! It's True! (1969). If the written copy on the rear LP jacket is to be taken at face value, the material on this roughly half-hour platter consists of spontaneous and extemporaneous items that Cosby "winged" during a run at Harrah's Casino in Lake Tahoe, NV. | | Sun Ra Secrets Of The Sun CD (1965)
Krooked Change Smeered songs
$12.19 An essential and, until its long overdue reissue in 2008, frustratingly elusive slice of seminal early Arkestra material, SECRETS OF THE SUN was recorded shortly after Sun Ra relocated from Chicago to New York in the early sixties and features a set of spare, brooding compositions performed by one of Ra's most powerful early ensembles. Clarinetist John Gilmore, guitarist Calvin Newborn and trumpeter Eddie Gale all make meaningful contributions to this dark, sometimes inscrutable outing, which bears traces of Ra's lingering obsession with doo-wop and his perennial fascination with themes of interstellar travel. Atavistic's lovingly assembled reissue includes the stunning, previously unreleased bonus track "Flight To Mars," a 17-minute long opus that anticipates some of the Arkestra's wilder experiments of the mid and late `60s.
Secrets of the Sun consists of sessions recorded by drummer Tommy "Bugs" Hunter in 1962 at the Choreographer's Workshop in New York City, the Arkestra's regular rehearsal studio. Since they had only recently moved to New York (some decided to stay in Chicago), these are small-group Arkestra recordings. This is an interesting transitional album because you can still hear echoes of the Chicago sound in some of the pieces, but the sound is growing beyond merely "exotic," with percussion playing an increasingly larger role and the pieces starting to sound more amorphous. "The Friendly Galaxy" has the same sort of mysterious vibe as "Ancient Aetheopia" with nice trumpet and piano work as well as John Gilmore on bass clarinet (which he plays on a couple cuts). "Solar Differentials" has a similar but weirder feel because the horns change to "Space Bird Sounds" and Art Jenkins adds some of his distinctive "Space Voice." "Space Aura" is built on a great horn riff, while both Gilmore (again on bass clarinet) and Sun Ra both shine on a stripped-down version of "Love in Outer Space." Things head a bit more out for the last couple tracks, where percussion and reverb start to dominate the sound, as they would on several of the Choreographer Workshop recordings. This is an interesting album for Ra fans because it's such a small band and shows how new ideas were taking hold in the music, not to mention Gilmore's use of bass clarinet, which he stopped playing completely sometime in the '60s. [The Atavistic reissue adds a track from the same time period that was originally slated to be one side of a Saturn album that was never released prior to this. "Flight to Mars" is a fascinating piece on a number of fronts. If it was actually recorded in 1962 with the rest of this album (and the listed personnel seems to bear this out), it would certainly be one of the earliest recorded examples (if not the earliest) of this type of side-long extended ...
