Debutante album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Debutante CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe ...

Debutante CD music
$14.45 Skeletons, the shape-shifting post-rock project of Matt Mehlan, create oblique sonic worlds perched somewhere between sickly-sweet pop confessionals and the fever-pitch abstractions of out-jazz and experimental electronica. While the group's idiosyncratic pop vision falls just short of a comfortable familiarity, their always unpredictable, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach guarantees never ...
| | Richie Havens Richard P. Havens, 1983 CD (1969)
Debutante music CDs
$17.75 The first Richie Havens album released in the wake of the folk singer's star turn at Woodstock, RICHARD P. HAVENS, 1983 (no, we don't understand the title either), was originally a two-LP set, and it's a bold production that builds on Havens' earlier, more sparse work by throwing a wide variety of instrumental textures into the arrangements. Havens is typically revelatory in his reinvention of well known tunes by the Beatles and others, but there are ...
| | Crooked Jades Shining Darkness CD (2008)
Debutante songs
$17.09 Illuminating the shadows and exploring the alchemy of art and darkness, this new release actualizes founder Jeff Kazor’s dream of the first all-original Crooked Jades album. Recorded in Fantasy’s famous Studio A by Bruce Kaphan (ex-American Music Club) and co-produced by Jeff and Bruce, Shining Darkness features the current lineup playing 19 original compositions from driving fiddle and banjo tunes to beautiful and haunting ballads, all with the usual inspired arrangements and eclectic instrumentation, including harmonium, bao (Vietnamese one-string box zither) and mbira in symphony with string-band standards fiddle, banjo, guitar, ukulele and arco bass. With this project The Crooked Jades renew their mission to reinvent old-world music for a modern age. With an old-time foundation they create their unique and soulful sound by interweaving the roots of Americana with the diverse musical influences of Europe and Africa, playing with a thrilling energy and innovation which has critics comparing them to everyone from Nick Cave and Tom Waits to The New Lost City Ramblers and Gillian Welch. The Crooked Jades, who have a tune from their last album World’s on Fire in Sean Penn’s Oscar-nominated film “Into the Wild” will be playing just a week of CD release dates on the West Coast in August before heading off to Europe for a month of shows including the Belfast Festival at Queens. San Francisco-based leader and song-writer Jeff Kazor (guitar, lead vocals) will be joined by Leah Abramson of the Vancouver old-time band Dyad (ukulele, harmonium, female vocals), Boston bass player Charlie Rose of Asylum Street Spankers/South Austin Jug Band, Rose Sinclair of Heart Beats fame (banjo, slide) and Portland native Sophie Vitells (fiddle). QUOTES “Grounded in tradition, old-time string band music and mountain blues but with open horizons that take them, subtly, to other parts of the planet, they have a haunting spookiness, an organic pulse, and most importantly a clear ...
