Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. And even as she's becoming omnipresent, with her songs mingling with those who co-opt her on the radio, she still is slightly skewed, willing to go so far over the top ...

Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009 album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club. Best of the latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere, like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome by a guitar crunching juggernaut. Georgia's Clemente really makes an impression with Teeth Measure the Need, its first album to feature a fleshed-out lineup and widespread release. Pedal steel, cello, and viola add rich, velvety color to Jefrey Siler's Southern gothic stories; there are acoustic guitars too, and vibes, and twinges of electric piano and electric guitar. In the louder moments -- "Bring Your Sore Throat," "Raising," or "Familiar" -- Clemente can suggest the yearn and clatter of Will Johnson and Centro-Matic; other times, it's American Music Club's literate, highly evocative sound that comes to mind. Like these stylistic touchstones, Clemente's songs are good at establishing a tangible mood. In "Gradually," Jeff Moore's pedal steel isn't a device to say "Ladies and gentlemen, alt.country." No, it swells with real gravity, shimmering in the corners of the rooms and lives Siler is singing about, aching along with his cracking voice as the relationship seems to dissolve. "Let Go of My Hand" is a nice lament driven by the drums of Buffy Davis and Siler's resigned statement, "Maybe you weren't meant to live in this city"; "Hallway Stay Quiet" plays a fiddle off the pedal steel, and sways in refracted stillness like closing time at the VFW hall. Teeth Measure the Need's material can blend into a long Americana ramble. But it's a strong record for that same reason, since Siler's songs have such a pungent, descriptive sense of place. With a deep and varied instrumental lineup, Clemente's sound is warmly organic, and as tactile as a novel. ~ Johnny Loftus ClementeClemente do not just play songs, they tell stories. From the account of an ambulance driver who works overtime to avoid family contact to the tale of a meek protagonist taking a gardening job to be near someone he idolizes, the lyrics on !whilst honey hums explore complex human emotion and are refreshingly clear of cliches. Constant nomad Jefrey Siler, the wordsmith behind Clemente, is a native Southerner living in Sydney, Australia; the tone of his songs echo aspects of his recent past in California and Athens, GA, his present life Down Under (which includes compiling a songwriting book and working on houses), and his upcoming residency in France 'with the Mrs.

'Clemente's album !whilst honey hums is the culmination of a long-time collaboration between singer/songwriter/guitarist Jefrey Siler and his cousin Keith Bailey (on bass); this collection of stories and songs provoke hope and imagination while still fueling a sense of cynicism.
