Summing up the first 15 years of her recording career, CLOSER: THE BEST OF SARAH MCLACHLAN is a near perfect overview of the Canadian singer-songwriter. Over the course of 27 songs on two CDs, the anthology provides all McLachlan's best known songs and a number of more obscure fan favorites in neatly chronological order. Chronicling her rise from a Kate Bush-influenced singer-songwriter to the creator of the Lilith Fair generation to her more recent status as a much beloved and influential figure for a new generation of female singer-songwriters, CLOSER: THE BEST OF SARAH MCLACHLAN is hard to improve upon. The set includes all five of McLachlan's Billboard Top 40 hits, including the Top 5 smashes "Angel" and "Aida." There are also two new songs, "U Want Me 2" (available here in two different mixes) and "Don't Give Up On Us."

Yet another album by German guitar superstar Axel Rudi Pell, Mystica delivers...well, pretty much what every previous Axel Rudi Pell album has delivered. Pell is comfortable enough with his impressive chops that he doesn't have to do the whole God of the Fretboard routine that so many European metal guitarists are saddled with, so his albums are refreshingly light on the pyrotechnics. He does have a fondness for the pretentiously titled instrumental, however, so here listeners have "Haunted Castle Serenade (Opus #4 Grazioso e Aggresso)" and "The Mysterious Return (Intro)." Otherwise, this is utterly straightforward, by the book melodic hard rock in the '80s poodle-hair style, complete with former Hardline singer Johnny Gioeli's pleasant but utterly anonymous vocals. If you still treasure your Scorpions and Rainbow albums, Mystica is sure to please, but those whose taste in metal has progressed beyond 1987 might find this unapologetically old-school stuff too retro for their tastes. ~ Stewart Mason

Christian Wig learned clawhammer banjo in 1971. In the latter 70’s, with partner Dave Neff, he owned Boulder Junction Folk Music Center in Uniontown, Ohio, where he built and repaired instruments and ran a coffee house featuring the likes of the Hot Mud Family, the Highwoods, Tracy Schwartz, and other traditional performers, both from the US and UK. Beginning the fiddle in 1975 with South Forty, he has since been featured with the North Fork Rounders, Boiled Buzzards, and Mustill House Muskrats.
