Second Hand Roots music CDs
$13.85 Despite his statement in the liner notes that "In an era where it is best to play it safe, I chose to take a risk...," there isn't much surprising or risky about young guitarist Joe Bonamassa's fifth studio album. Most of his previous releases have mixed blues covers with his own originals, all played with a rocker's attitude, volume and less-than-subtle approach. This one follows suit and even though he goes on to say that he "wanted to make a blues album, not a rock album that has blues on it," as in the past; it's impossible to claim that he has succeeded with You & Me. That doesn't make this a bad or disappointing disc; quite the contrary, it's a solid blues-rock release and arguably his best work to date. But as early as the second track, an original rocker titled "Bridge to Better Days," ...

Second Hand Roots album
$6.79 You might mistake this for a live record, but this is actually a 1973 studio release by the Texas blues guitar master. Winter's first release after a brief retirement/drying-out period, STILL ALIVE AND WELL, from the title on down, has the feeling of a major comeback, although Winter really hadn't been gone for very long. Looking hale and hearty on the cover--or as hale and hearty as a rail-thin albino can look, anyway--Winter sounds equally ...

Second Hand Roots album
$10.15 A Bit like pouring 1kg of orange Space Dust in your earsGood sci-fi soundtrackVery interesting sequencing with the chimes and xylophone in the beginning. I like the burbling keyboard line in the first minute. Actually, the keyboard programming and sequencing is clever throughout the track. It's easy for synth sounds to become lifeless in uncreative hands, but you don't have that problem. The rhythm section is very idiosyncratic - I always like hearing a different approach to rhythm besides the old boom-pap boom-boom-pap AC/DC stuff. All the arpeggiating synths and strange effects going on make sure there's never a dull moment. After the quiet part around 5 minutes or so, it sounds like a completely different song. It's a little disorienting, and I kind of miss the first part. But maybe that's the direction you wanted to go. It's hard for me to suggest improvements because I'm not sure what your intended purpose or audience is. I can't point to any flaws in the mix. This track sounds like it would work well in some kind of sci-fi movie or TV show. Your sound reminds me of a cross between Danny Elfman and Isao Tomita, a Japanese synth programming genius who sequenced many classical works. Other notes: Change at about 3:35 seems to come out of nowhere. I like the bass line at 4:30. Things are really getting funky here in the 6th minute. I'm afraidThis is something that ive never heard before. I wouldnt even categorize this as a "song". Its hard for me to figure out, how much of these sounds, that are played, and how much that are just programmed. Its a difficult and uncomfortable journey through strange rooms and spaces of synth-arppegios, unearthy sweeps, and generally wierd sound-landscapes. Some of it sounds even classic orchestral, like its composed, arranged and scored by a welleducated musician. For some reason, i cant keep from thinking of Frank Zappa. Maybe its because this whole composition has a sort of built-in intellectual-distance to the listener. In the process of listening to this piece, you simple accept, that you dont get it. I cannot judge if this is good or bad, and i cannot give any critics or advices, because it is so different from anything i know.Review: Morose beats, ambient tunes and textures, odd bits and pieces from left field, sci-fi weirdmusic ...

$10.15 SCIENTIFIC MAPPOWER TO THE BABIESImaginary Chicago Records 004___________________________________Produced by acclaimed house/electronica artist Anthony Nicholson, the debut recording by Chicago genre-busters Scientific Map is a bold statement of the New Chicago Sound.Moving between Afrobeat, funk, fusion, hip hop, new groove, nu-jazz, psychedelia, and R&B, "Power to the Babies" could only have been recorded in Chicago. Its stylistic fluency is a result of the varied artistic demands placed on musicians in such a culturally diverse city.Bandleader/guitarist Matt Hudson describes the musical vision of the new album: “We’re now experiencing the end of genre. Information from around the world is travelling to us so quickly that we’re constantly exposed to new cultural and musical ideas. Musicians can’t help but be influenced by this. If they’re open-minded enough, the result is a cohesive, genreless sound that is fresh and new.”Throughout the album, Matt Hudson’s playing demonstrates an innovative and nuanced re-imagining of jazz guitar that is influenced as much by Wes Montgomery as by Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood. This stylistic diversity is reflected in the range of guest artists featured throughout, ...
