There's nothing too startling on this brief, ten-song set of Halloween-themed tracks, and aside from the theme to John Carpenter's Halloween, which is always pretty creepy to hear, there isn't anything particularly frightening, either. Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" is here, along with Blue Öyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" and, of course, Bobby Pickett's "Monster Mash," which pops up everywhere when Halloween season rolls around. ~ Steve Leggett

Halloween Classics
$12.59 With only their fifth album in over ten years, the Saw Doctors have established a solid core of followers worldwide despite never being backed by a major label. However, Villains? does enjoy a distribution agreement with Ryko which should deliver this product to an even wider potential audience. Reduced to a threesome, the Saw Doctors have undergone subtle and infrequent changes in their sound -- subtle because the changes don't dramatically alter the sound of the band and infrequent because they aren't detectable on a majority of the cuts. For instance, the thoroughly modern rock opening title track utilizes distorted vocals and a keyboard-and-guitar-heavy Wall of Sound treatment eliciting a Lou Reed-like vibe. The following two tracks, "This Is Me" and "Still Afraid ...

Halloween Classics
$9.95 This is a delightful collection of 20 singles and B-sides, 17 of which never found their way onto studio albums. Several of these selections have become concert favorites like "I'd Love to Kiss the Bangles" and "Michael D. Rocking in the Dail." Many of the remaining tracks possess the youthful exuberance found on earlier albums like If This Is Rock'n'Roll, I Want My Old Job Back and All the Way From Tuam presumably since they were written during that early period. The Saw Doctors playfully mix early rock & roll with punk, country, folk and even Motown and, as is their trademark, compliment the music with themes of youthful lust, small town living, growing up Catholic and other recurrent identifiers. Lead vocalist Davey Carton compiled this collection so the integrity of the band and what they stand for is ...

Halloween Classics
$11.95 True troubadours of arena rock and pop-metal, Bon Jovi were not only still standing in the 2000s, they were still releasing albums of original material that packed much of the melodic wallop and anthemic muscle of their efforts from the '80s and early '90s. A case in point is 2005's HAVE A NICE DAY, which finds the band mining a harder rock sound and producing bigger, more sweeping choruses than ever before.

Halloween Classics
$13.09 New York City trio (via Washington, D.C.) Brown Wing Overdrive are a hand-in-glove fit for the Tzadik label's Lunatic Fringe series. Their label debut, ESP Organism, is a complete flip to wig city combination of warped electronics, Jew's harp, processed banjo, mystic shamanic chants, and percussion and found objects, all wrapped together in a systemic manner. They place noise against dynamic, organization against improvisational chaos, and these seemingly disparate elements are glued together with an irreverent yet healthy sense of humor. These guys are musical outsiders by choice, and these ten tracks showcase all different sides of that equation. There are moments here of pure screaming glee, such as on album opener "Acupunctured," where a repetitive chant, an out of tune banjo, digital delays, and woven noise and percussion instruments become their own animated sound ...
