Resgatando
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated to 11 musical artists (not all guitarists, either) who have had an influence on the duo. Recorded in Ixtapa, Mexico, the set was self-produced with the exception of two cuts, which were co-produced with John Leckie. Throughout, Rodrigo y Gabriela showcase their metal chops as part and parcel of their Mexican guitar heritage. They've not simply melded the two, but have created an entirely different form of music for the acoustic guitar in the process. It's infectious and accessible, full of pathos, intensity, passion, and color.
Audio Mixer: Colin Richardson.
Arranger: Rodrigo y Gabriela.

| | Riverdance CD (1996) Special Edition
Resgatando
$14.59 RIVERDANCE won the 1997 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
The Grammy Award-winning soundtrack to the popular Riverdance stage show has been re-released with a bonus remix of "Riverdance," as well as deluxe packaging which includes photographs from the show. Bill Whelan, who has worked for twenty years as a composer, producer, and arranger (his credits include work for Kate Bush, Hothouse Flowers, Van Morrison, and U2, among others), achieved international recognition for RIVERDANCE.
Whelan incorporates a variety of ethnic musical traditions as well as modern and choral music and the hypnotic, rhythmic hard-shoe Irish dancing for which RIVERDANCE is famous. This album traverses the continents, assembling an amazing group of international and Irish musicians. Standouts include the Irish choral group Anuna performing "Shivna," a haunting piece whose Irish lyrics are based on an 11th Century text.
Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland.
Personnel: Bill Whelan (arranger, handclaps); Juan Reina Gonzalez (vocals, handclaps); Aine Ui Cheallaigh (vocals); Des Moore (guitar); Rafael Riqueni (Spanish guitar, handclaps); Eileen Ivers (acoustic & electric fiddles); Maire Breatnach (fiddle); Nikola Parov (gadulka, kaval); Davy Spillane (whistle, Uilleann pipes); Ronan Browne ...

| | Amethystium Odonata CD (2001)
Resgatando
$12.75 This is the debut album from Amethystium which received a groundswell of support from online listeners, to the tune of a half million downloads before its official release. The album is attributed to Oystein Ramfjord, a composer from Norway who makes ambient electronic music full of mystifying sounds. The opening song, "Opaque," begins with an incredible underwater sonar pulse that makes way for passages of Indian vocals that are very reminiscent of Deep Forest. In fact, most songs employ well-crafted samples of ethnic music from disparate regions. These are held together by a steady synth percussion and sweeping vocals. The speaker phasing on "Enchantment" is particularly effective when listeners are wearing headphones, allowing the rich drones and sparkling tabla patterns to become multi-dimensional. "Arcane Voices" uses Gregorian sounding ...

| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CDs (2009)
Resgatando
$22.09 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire Straits, there are obvious similarities, even if he has taken a deliberately different path as a solo artist. Basically, he's a lot quieter. "Border Reiver," the first song here, begins with a pennywhistle and a piano, then strings join in. Soon enough, Knopfler's distinctive conversational baritone begins calmly intoning lyrics, and eventually there are examples of his melodic fingerpicked guitar style on both acoustic and electric guitar. He even works up to a smoldering swamp rock shuffle, a la J.J. Cale, on "Cleaning My Gun." But that's as close as he comes to really rocking out. More typical is "Hard Shoulder," a ballad that employs a twangy guitar sound and comes across as a number that Glen Campbell could have had a hit with back in his late-'60s "Wichita Lineman" heyday. The tunes support Knopfler's story-songs and musical character studies, as he describes or embodies truck drivers ("Border Reiver"), itinerant workers ("Get Lucky"), guitar makers ("Monteleone"), and sailors ("So Far from the Clyde"), among others, painting a portrait of pastoral and blue-collar life in the British Isles some time in the past.
