When They Cry - Vol. 5 video
$20.15 Like the cherry blossoms and bloody decapitations that saturate its frames, director Mamoru Kanbe's grisly anime series ELFEN LIED contrasts the opposing forces of innocence and evil with equal parts beauty and violence. Sexy, pink-haired Lucy is part of a race of genetic mutants known as Diclonius, who sport horns in their heads and are able to savagely dismember their victims with the use of psychically controlled invisible arms called vectors. After Lucy makes a violent escape from the military compound that imprisons her, she washes up naked and vulnerable on a beach shorefront and is taken in by teenage cousins Kohta and Yuka. But unbeknownst to her kindly benefactors, the now mute and amnesiac Lucy--redubbed Nyu for her inability to speak--still retains traces of her true killer nature, which amply reveals itself when the government sends out a team of renegade soldiers and another female mutant assassin to find and destroy her. Bloody and violent yet beautifully animated, this volume continues the anime series with three more episodes.
At the core of a conspiracy for a new world order lives ...

When They Cry - Vol. 5 review
$7.95 Not the 1986 Billy Crystal-Gregory Himes buddy cop movie of the same name, 2006's RUNNING SCARED is writer/director Wayne Kramer's (THE COOLER) take on the violent gangster crime genre. Paul Walker (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS) plays Joey Gazelle, a low-level Mafia thug who finds himself in the middle of a drug deal gone wrong, with a hail of gunfire and some dead undercover cops as the net result. Fleeing from the scene, Joey is charged with getting rid of one of the steel snub-nosed revolvers used to kill the cops. Instead, he stashes the gun in his own basement, just in case he ever needs insurance against his own gang. Unfortunately, Joey's 10-year-old son, Nicky (Alex Neuberger), and his best friend, Oleg (Cameron Bright), see where the weapon is hidden. Oleg, whose Russian mob-connected stepfather is physically abusive towards him and his mother, steals the gun to exact revenge. Shooting his father in the shoulder, he runs away with the "hot" gun. This forces Joey to embark on a nightmarish 18-hour journey to locate Oleg and the gun before his own ...

When They Cry - Vol. 5 DVD
$9.79 Bloodthirsty vengeance is measured out in buckets, not spoonfuls for this hard-hitting vampire movie sequel. The story picks up right where the first UNDERWORLD left off, in the midst of a war between Lycans (werewolves) and vampires, with the gorgeous death-dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale), on the run with her vamp-wolf hybrid lover, Michael (Scott Speedman). This go-'round, there are flashbacks to three centuries earlier and the separation of two ultra-bad brothers, one vampire and one Lycan. The Lycan gets locked in a hidden tomb/prison and the feud begins. In the present, the winged vamp brother Marcus (Tony Curran) is determined to find his Lycan sibling and free him, which would wreak unimaginable havoc on the world. Selene's got to stop it, and the result is mayhem, with great gun battles, bashings and hackings, mysterious artifacts, orgies, and sneaking around in the dripping wet crypts and catacombs. Beckinsale ...

When They Cry - Vol. 5 movie DVD
$9.69 With his 2006 remake of Wes Craven's 1977 slasher THE HILLS HAVE EYES, French director Alexandre Aja manages to accomplish what many directors fail to do by making his film a definite improvement over the original. With Craven on board as producer, Aja sticks pretty closely to the first film's script and storyline, but with the help of a larger budget, special effects, better actors, and slick cinematography, creates a much scarier story. While the film's setting is contemporary, it maintains a 1970s feel in parts, paying tribute to the decade in which the slasher subgenre was born. With an interesting opening-credit sequence consisting of actual nuclear testing footage, we are told that the film's desert setting was the site of nuclear testing during the 1950s and ‘60s. Warned to vacate, the miners that lived there refused to leave, thus subjecting themselves to high levels of toxic radiation, and breeding mutant babies as a result. It is this generation of now-grown mutants that the poor Carter family has the misfortune to encounter while driving through New Mexico on their way to California.
When their vehicle breaks down in the desert, the Carters are too busy bickering with one another to realize they have entered enemy territory. But it doesn't take long for the ...
