There are several very distinct periods of Renaissance history -- of which the most exciting may well be the time surrounding their best album, A Song for All Seasons, It is the album -- along with Azure d'Or and Novella -- that almost broke them as pop stars and was filled with some of the most interesting (in their prog rock roots) songs they had yet written. This live album is from the tour accompanying the Song for All Seasons tour -- and, as such, it could be argued that it is Renaissance at the peak of their powers. Even more so than Live at Carnegie Hall or the welcomed reunion concert, In the Land of the Rising Sun, Dreams & Omens captures Renaissance as one tight pop band. They almost play like a cross between the Alan Parsons Project and late-era ABBA (as in The Visitors-era ABBA!). Never mind that there are only six songs and that some of them top out at over ten minutes. This is great pop music played by professionals at the top of their game. To hear the two included numbers from Song for All Seasons is the absolute highlight -- their mini-single, "Northern Lights," and -- especially -- the epic "Day of the Dreamer." One only wishes that the band or the label had seen fit to reissue this concert in its entirety, in order to hear more of the gems that don't often come across the usual Renaissance live albums and compilations. This is the sound of a band hitting its creative peak and understanding how to reconcile ten-minute epics with three-minute pop songs with astonishing results in both arenas. And you can only listen and marvel as they do it so effortlessly. Hands down, this is Renaissance's best live release. Its only flaw is in its brevity. Essential for fans. ~ Tomas Mureika

Renaissance Dreams & Omens Songs Dreams & Omens Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) Live Renaissance! This is a nice recording from the soundboard, capturing Renaissance on their 1978 tour for "A Song for All Seasons" album. The line-up is Annie Haslam, Mick Dunford, Jon Camp, John Tout and of Terry Sullivan - the classic line up that made all the great Renaissance albums of the 1970's. Its is a great perfomance by the group, and Annie's vocals soar beautifully above the band's excellent playing.
The opening track "Can You Hear Me?" is well played and inspiring, and yet it does not miss the orchestra that is on the studio version. An old favorite "Carpet of the Sun" is simply on auto pilot here - a song the band can likely play perfectly if they were to get together again today. The third track "Day of the Dreamer" is a very underrated Renaissance song that is well performed and sung beautifully by Annie. Incredible vocals - protect your fine crystal! "Midas Man" and "Northern Lights" show the contrast between the darker songs the band performed (Midas Man), and the lighter more joyful songs they played (Northern Lights). Finally, a great track from the "Turn of the Cards" album, "Things I Don't Understand" rounds out the cd, with powerful playing and singing leading into a gorgeous vocalese section accompanied by Mickey's acoustic guitar, followed by the rest of the band. As always, John Tout's classically inspired piano trasnistions the band into the conclusion of the song, and also finshes off the piece with grace, intertwining with bass, acoustic guitar and Terry's excellent cymbal work.
I can only say I wish there was more music (the cd is about 48 minutes long). I really hope Annie and Mickey release more archival material. There are many fans who continue to love Renaissance's music, and cannot get enough of it. This kind of release is just what the doctor ordered. Thank you! And oh, please buy this CD!!! Timeless Show I was at this concert back in 1978.The Tower Theatre was a second home to Renaissance back then.Words can hardly describe the magical and mystical tapestry woven by Renaissance.
This cd accurately captures this show and era.
Vastly underated time has proven again how far Renaissance was ahead of the curb.Annie Haslam's vocal mesmerized all and the intracacy of the songs are unbelievable. An excellent recording reproduced here for all.
Amust for all Renaissance fans or Annie Haslam fans. Submitted by byronc98 (Gloucester N.J.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
