This religious drama examines the life of a man who has had an immeasurable effect on the lives of people around the world. In BILLY: THE EARLY YEARS, Billy Graham (played by Armie Hammer) is at the beginning of his lifelong journey of faith, which started in the Great Depression. From his conversion at a tent revival to his struggle with his beliefs, this film illustrates the life of one of the most important spiritual figures of the modern era. BILLY not only looks at his courtship of his wife, Ruth Bell Graham (Stefanie Butler), but also at his friendship with Charles Templeton, a fellow preacher who emerges from a crisis of faith without his beliefs intact. As a young man, Templeton is played by MAD MEN regular Kristoffer Polaha, and Oscar winner Martin Landau plays the former pastor in his old age. Country singer Josh Turner stars as gospel great George Beverly Shea.

$21.45 THE NOTEBOOK's Nick Cassavetes directs another tearjerking literary adaptation with this drama based on Jodi Picoult's novel. Cameron Diaz takes a detour from comedy to play Sara, the domineering mother of Kate (Sofia Vassilieva, MEDIUM), a young girl with cancer. Sara’s other daughter, 11-year-old Anna (Abigail Breslin), was conceived just to serve as a donor for her sick sister. On the outskirts of the family are father Brian (Jason Patric), who feels unable to stand up to his wife’s strength, and son Jesse (Evan Ellingson), who craves attention in the face of Kate’s illness. ...

Billy: The Early Years review
$6.55 A charming, low-key romantic comedy, MURPHY'S ROMANCE is full of the small pleasures missing from other pictures of its genre. James Garner, in his first Oscar-nominated performance, is the title character, Murphy. Garner lends his unique, down-home persona to the character while the film's writers endow the character with some memorable lines. Murphy's romance begins when Emma (Field) arrives in the small Arizona town where he lives. With her she brings her son Jake, and a feisty attitude. Though this sounds like a set-up from any number of other film ...

$15.09 Adapted from Glenn M. Stewart's stage musical, THE CITY CLUB, Rachel Samuels's DARK STREETS is a smoky modern noir set in an unnamed Depression-era American city. Gabriel Mann stars as Chaz Davenport, the son of a wealthy and important public figure who surprises everyone by committing suicide. A distraught Chaz, who owns a hot new nightclub featuring a talented roster of singers and dancers, soon discovers there was another side to his father's life--and death--that he knew nothing about. At the same time, a very strange police lieutenant (Elias Koteas) shows up, offering Chaz protection from the loan sharks he owes big money to in exchange for giving a shot to sexy chanteuse Madelaine (Izabella Miko). Chaz's growing interest in the femme fatale creates a wedge between him and another of his singers, Crystal (Bijou Phillips), with whom he has an on-again, off-again relationship. While the city keeps experiencing blackouts, scandal ...

$15.15 Released in a post-globalization economy teetering on the brink of a depression, THE INTERNATIONAL admirably stays in step with its time. Screenwriter Eric Singer hangs this man-against-the-machine action-thriller not on the Russians, North Koreans, or turncoats in the C.I.A., but on the I.B.B.C., an international bank that wields power through crippling debt. With villains like these, viewers fretting over their own mortgage rates will find themselves rooting zealously for these crooked financiers to fall hard. Interpol agent Louis Salinger (Clive Owen) and his partner, New York Assistant D.A. Eleanor Whitman (the somewhat underused Naomi Watts), are consistently stonewalled by local law enforcement in their attempt to close in on the bank’s insiders. The conflict deepens two-fold as Salinger discovers not only how wide the bank’s nefarious influence spreads, but how loosely he will act within legal boundaries to get his man. Owen elevates the at-times standard espionage plot ...

In this deadpan comic send-up/tribute to the psychotic male loner of American cinema (à la TAXI DRIVER, DIRTY HARRY, DEATH WISH, etc., security guard Ronnie Barnhardt (Seth Rogen) is determined to keep the mall safe, whetherhe's running down skaters or harassing employees. A flasher is terrorizing the mall and Ronnie is determined to catch him, and no matter how misguided Ronnie's efforts, the swelling rock-&-roll soundtrack is with him all the way, underscoring his triumphs and his tragedies with fist-pounding anthems and tear-wrenching ballads by Queen, the Yardbirds, and the Band. Writer-director Jody Hill delivers on the promise he showed with THE FOOT FIST WAY, taking the same sort of clueless, fearless protagonist and going even deeper into the darkness. Rogen projects a surprising amount of unstoppable force as the ...
