| | John Legend Evolver CD John Legend Discography of CDs
The third full-length from John Legend finds the neo-soul singer-songwriter mixing it up a bit. Whereas its predecessor, the excellent ONCE AGAIN, stayed the course of smooth yet passionate retro-themed R&B, EVOLVER experiments with different sounds and styles. The lead single, "Green Light," with its amped-up programmed beat, synths, and cameo from Andre 3000, sounds more like a 21st-century club jam than an old-school throwback. Reggae, ballads, adult contemporary, and digitized contemporary R&B all make their way into the album's diverse musical stew. Whether it's the mellow, low-key funk of "It's Over," the synth-pop of "Satisfaction" (one can imagine the song being performed by Depeche Mode), or the guest spots from Brandy, Estelle, and Kanye West, EVOLVER keeps the listener guessing. It may not have the consistency of Legend's first two releases, but its cornucopia of interesting sounds and directions offer something for everyone.
This DVD/CD deluxe set includes his album featuring Kanye West, Andree 3000, and Estelle.

Spin (p.106) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "EVOLVER proves that Legend remains one of R&B's most forward-looking craftsmen." Entertainment Weekly (p.62) - "Legend is still at his best when he plays to his voice's strengths with clean-cut ballads like 'Everybody Knows.'" -- Grade: B+ Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "When he moves away from the more straightforward ballads, it's obvious that Legend's maverick side is still intact....He's reaching out to address more universal themes, and finding the music to match." | | Andre Nickatina Conversation With A Devil CD (2003)
Evolver music CDs
$16.49 DVD features live concert footage, a full length feature film, trailer, and interview footage.
On Conversation With a Devil, Andre Nickatina returns to center stage with an ambitious "concept" record recording the life of our protagonist, Dre Dog. Unfortunately, that's about as good as it gets. The first song is just absolutely repulsive, made up of rhymes that could have been taken from a middle-school poetry workshop. Rhyming Sugar Ray with Sade is a bit shy of genius, but right from the get-go it is blatantly obvious that Madonna recruited Nickatina to write the lyrics for her rap in "American Life." With such bouts of prose as "It was 1984, I was on a plane that was about to soar" and "my girlfriend drinks Coronas and knows about the Ayatollah," Eminem and Nas can rest peacefully at night, knowing that their crowns will not be challenged by Nicky. The monotone delivery is reminiscent of some old-school MCs, but even old schools delivered with flair and style. This delivers a smattering of cottage cheese and water when expecting a sirloin steak. The production is mediocre at best, with the vocals being about 4,000 decibels louder than the music within the mix. "Dice of Life" is like a bad Irish jig/pirate tune straight out of a three-star theme restaurant, with some wretched lyrics bragging about hanging with Shaq and how Mike Tyson loves custom autos. Even LFO was more poetic when reminiscing about girls in Abercrombie & Fitch. Things get better, thankfully, as Nickatina hits his stride on "Soul of a ...

$16.65 Jennifer Hudson's name and voice were already well known to the general public by the time her first album appeared in 2008. Hudson's appearance on AMERICAN IDOL, and her starring role in the film DREAMGIRLS, introduced her as a talent to be reckoned with. Her self-titled debut, a sleek collection of contemporary R&B, reinforces that impression. Lead single "Spotlight," a moody, midtempo groover, kicks things off and is one of the disc's highlights, along with the Timbaland-produced "Pocketbook" featuring Ludacris, and "I'm His Only Woman," a duet with Fantasia. Elsewhere, ...

| | Band Of Heathens One Foot In The Ether CD (2009) Digipak
Evolver CD music
$12.05 As you might expect from a group fronted by three singer/songwriters, the material on One Foot in the Ether is uniformly strong. The band's principals -- Colin Brooks, Gordy Quist, and Ed Jurdi -- all share writing and publishing credits, and since all three play several instruments, the album boasts a diversity of sounds and styles. The first thing that strikes you is how many of these tunes sound like gospel music. Given the name of the band, it's a real surprise. "Shine a Light" is a mellow, call-and-response number with churchy organ, stinging slide guitar, and an uplifting lyric. "You're Gonna Miss Me" is a blues with a gospel tinge, although the lyric is strictly secular. An odd, stuttering, New Orleans backbeat supplied by drummer John Chipman and rousing group vocals make the track take fire. "Let Your Heart Not Be Troubled" is a love song with a strong hint of gospel and a deep spiritual feeling, a heartfelt expression of sympathy to a friend in need of a helping hand. "Talking Out Loud" is another secular spiritual and sounds like something the Band might have recorded with a vocal that suggests the style of Levon Helm. "Golden Calf" is a swampy field holler that references a famous Old Testament image; the music is dark, bluesy and funereal, a blend of Howlin' Wolf and the Staple Singers. There's also the folky country groove of "What's This World," ...
