Although Mike Patton found fame and fortune as the singer for Faith No More (with their 1989 breakthrough release THE REAL THING), he was first a member of Mr. Bungle. Instead of quitting his former band when he accepted FNM's vocal offer, Patton decided to keep both projects going simultaneously. In the wake of FNM's big success in the early 1990s, Mr. Bungle was signed to Warner Bros., who issued the band's self-titled debut in 1991.

Mr. Bungle was far more abstract and all-over-the-place than Faith No More, with little regard for conventionality, song structure, or any sort of borders between musical genres. Strange ditties such as "Quote Unquote," "Slowly Growing Deaf," "Egg," and "My Ass Is on Fire," have are bizarre creations that inhabit their own weird world, and they've become classics to fans that appreciate the band's musically proficient absurdity.

Mr. Bungle's debut for Warner Bros., originally released in 1991, is one of the most difficult major label "rock" records of all time. Led by Mike Patton and with downtown New York legend John Zorn as producer, Mr. Bungle is a twisted and schizophrenic r

Danzig 777: I Luciferi CD  (2002)

Mr. Bungle album
CD $12.95  3.7 stars Audio Samples
The tire around the middle might be a little thicker and the imagery more along the lines of comic books, but DANZIG 777 - I LUCIFERI finds its namesake churning out the type of hard-rock-flavored goth that makes mature adults don Doc Martens and plenty of black. Leading a quartet that includes former D Generation bassist Howie Pyro, Danzig doesn't skimp on the heaviness, whether he's growling his way through stompers ("Kiss The Skull"), bullying his way through dirges ("Without Light, I Am"), or howling over hard-hitting grooves ("Naked Witch"). Most notable is the ease with which the burly singer busts out rap-rock couplets on the Rollins-flavored "Wicked Pussycat," sure to freak out old school Misfits and Samhain fans. Not quite a reinvention of the wheel, DANZIG 777 - I LUCIFERI nevertheless manages to prove that Danzig can still work that old black magic. The untouchable legacy will undoubtedly be strengthened with this 2002 release on Spitfire Records. 13 tracks including 'Black Mass', 'Liberskull', 'Naked Witch' & 'Halo Goddess Bone'. Audio Mixers: Glenn Danzig; Nick Raskulinecz. Recording information: GlenwoodPlace; Grandmaster-Hollywood; Hollywood Sound; RumboRecorders; The Hook. Danzig includes: Glenn Danzig (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Todd Youth (guitar); Howie Pyro (bass); Joey C. (drums). Personnel: Glenn Danzig (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Todd Youth (guitar); Joey C. & Jock-D (drums).

For his long-awaited follow-up to 1993's BLACK ARIA, metal icon Glenn Danzig (the Misfits, Samhain, Danzig) conjures up another collection of macabre classical-influenced compositions. Whereas the first outing focused on the Biblical story of the angels falling from Heaven, this album relates the tale of Lilith, the mythical first wife of Adam, who consorted with demons after leaving the Garden of Eden. Although much of the brooding, atmospheric work is instrumental, Danzig leaves room for haunting vocal tracks, as on "Unclean Sephira," which embodies ...

It may surprise some to find that Glenn Danzig turned 53 in 2008, but with a career that reaches back to the late '70s, including pioneering acts such as the Misfits and Samhain, he's been in the public eye for a long time. His greatest commercial success, however, has come with his namesake band, and with eight full-length albums to his credit, Danzig has left numerous quality songs on the cutting room floor. THE LOST TRACKS OF DANZIG aims to fix that. A two-disc set made up of cast-offs from every Danzig album, it's a comprehensive alternate history of this seminal band. Leathery blues-metal ("When Death Had No Name" ) and sadistic garage-fuzz ("Lick The Blood Off My Hands") represent various facets of Danzig's sound, but the real treat here is the 1950s balladry of "Cold, Cold Rain," a popular live standard finally getting ...

Cult figure Glen Danzig couldn't have made a better choice to co-produce his latest album, DANZIG 4, than with American Recordings main man Rick Rubin. Rubin's production flavor first became a hit with the Beastie Boys in the late '80s. His flair for big drums and guitar has always been a part of his production, and with Danzig he might have finally met his match. Danzig's culmination of Sabbath-era Ozzy Osborne, and the bravado of Robert Plant's Led Zeppelin years rips through the speakers on twelve tracks of possession and malice. With this band, Danzig's considerable vocal talents are beefed up by a band with a bigger musical bite than either of Danzig's previous efforts, Samhain or the Misfits before them. The huge guitar riffing throughout DANZIG 4 is eerily subdued on "Bringer Of Death," where the Sabbath influence slips through in a sitar-like acoustic piece wedged immediately after guitarist John Christ's ferocious electric attack and Chuck Bisquits' pummeling double-bass drums. DANZIG 4 proves Danzig to be in fine form after almost twenty years in the business. DANZIG 4 contains a hidden track after "Let It Be Captured." Recorded at Ocean Way, Hollywood, California and Sound City, Van Nuys, California. Danzig: Glenn ...

While Danzig's sophomore effort from 1990, DANZIG II: LUCIFUGE, wasn't exactly as strong as the band's self-titled debut, it still managed to contain several standout tracks that remain among Danzig's all-time best. While the debut wasn't an immediate hit upon release, it succeeded in attracting a wider metal following (Glenn Danzig's previous bands specialized in punk) and establishing the band as one of hard rock's most promising new acts. DANZIG II also took more chances musically than its predecessor--while the majority of the album is rock-based, other styles are touched upon that were previously unexplored by the band. "Her Black Wings" remains one of Danzig's most evil-sounding compositions (especially its sinister guitar riff), and became a popular video on MTV's Headbanger's Ball program. Also included is the explosive album (and subsequent concert) opener, "Long Way Back From Hell," as well as such other rockers as "Snakes of Christ" and "Tired of Being Alive." But the biggest surprises on DANZIG II: LUCIFUGE are undoubtedly the tender, Elvis Presley-sounding composition "Blood and Tears" and the semi-ballad "Devil's Plaything." Recorded at Hollywood Sound Recorders, Larrabee ...

CD $6.25  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Singer Glenn Danzig had been a favorite in the underground punk scene since the '70s, with a pair of influential outfits, the Misfits and Samhain. Big-time fans of Danzig's work were the members of Metallica, who constantly sported shirts of Danzig's bands past and present, sparking widespread interest for his 1988 major label debut, simply titled DANZIG. Rounding out the band was Samhain bassist Eerie Von, ex-Black Flag/Circle Jerks drummer Chuck Biscuits, and newcomer John Christ on guitar. While the music and subject matter of the Misfits and Samhain relied on comic book horror and cacophony, DANZIG showed that Glenn had brought in elements of blues rock, plodding Black Sabbath-esque metal, and Jim Morrison-like vocals, while the lyrics seemed to rely on two themes: women and religion. Written entirely by Glenn Danzig, the album is considered to be his finest by many longtime fans--such classics as "Twist of Cain," "Not of this World," "She Rides," and "Am I Demon" were all included. But the best-known track remains the original studio version of "Mother," which would turn out to be Danzig's commercial breakthrough a few years later when included on the 1993 live mini-album THRALL: DEMONSWEATLIVE. Recorded at Atlantic Recording Studios and Chung King Metal, New York, New York. Danzig: Glenn Danzig (vocals); John Christ (guitar); Eerie Von (bass guitar); Chuck Biscuits (drums). After the glow of Album, Gone Fishin' may sound like a bit of a disappointment primarily due to the cleaned up (for Flipper anyway) sound, but that shouldn't stop you from enjoying this record. Not as confrontational nor as gloriously unhinged, Gone Fishin' still has moments that will poleaxe you with their power. ~ John Dougan The second and final studio album for the original lineup of SF's Flipper was first released in 1984. Flipper took the "punk" tag to extremes, as no other band in the world was playing punk this slow, sludgy, ...
