Roman history comes alive in this magnificent 13-part series. Tracing the lives of the last of the Roman emperors, it's an epic of ruthless ambition, shocking debauchery and murderous intrigue set in one of history's most fascinating eras. Bearing witness to the saga is Claudius, whose stutter and limp have marked him a fool--yet whom prophesies have foretold will one day rule Rome. This collector's edition set includes a unique documentary feature, The Epic That Never Was (1965, 71 min.), a remarkable behind-the-scenes look at Alexander Korda's ill-fated 1937 screen adaptation of I, Claudius. Merle Oberon and Charles Laughton star. Since its debut in 1976, I, CLAUDIUS has remained one of the BBC's most successful broadcasts, and stands as a high point for dramatic storytelling in the medium overall. The BAFTA- and Emmy-winning epic traces the rise and fall of the last Roman rulers as seen through the eyes of the elderly emperor Claudius (Derek Jacobi). Featuring celebrated performances by Patrick Stewart, John Rhys-Davies, Sian Phillips, and John Hurt, the 13-part series is gripping in its portrayal of cunning characters made bloodthirsty by their blinding desire for power. In addition to the original program, this collector's set offers the documentary THE EPIC THAT NEVER WAS, a chronicle of the never-completed screen adaptation of the series. I, Claudius - Remastered Edition Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) One of the best ever I Claudius is gripping and sophisticated, one of the best dramatic series ever produced. Based on the wonderful book of the same name by the noted British author, historian and classical scholar Robert Graves, the series tells the story of Claudius, the Roman who avoided assassination by feigning half-wittedness and eventually became emperor. In telling his story, the drama tells the history of the early Roman emperors from Augustus through Caligula, with all its intrigue, plotting, and tragedy. A "don't miss" television event that is as fresh and engaging today as when it was first produced. Submitted by zink.paul (Gloucester, MA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Gripping, fascinating - you don't want it to end! I saw this on PBS in the early 90s and now again in 2009. I re-watched several episodes as it went just because it was so entertaining. The actors make these characters come alive so believably you think it's really happening; the costuming, sets and makeup are first rate. It doesn't look like they filmed it, but used video tape so it has the visual quality of a soap opera, but you forget all about that as you are caught up in the intrigue. You will laugh, cry, shudder and cheer, I Claudius is a triumph, you will love Clau-Clau-Clau-Clau-Claudis !!! Submitted by sevans (Dallas TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$10.49 Based on actual diary accounts of several teenagers following the L.A. riots, FREEDOM WRITERS is the story of an idealistic teacher's attempts to make a difference in the lives of her at-risk students. Located in gang-ravaged Long Beach, California, Woodrow Wilson High is a hotbed of violence due to a voluntary integration program which brings Black, Latino, Asian, and White students together. Rather than having the desired effect of creating healthy diversity, this program breeds constant war between all parties involved, the result being daily gun shots, constant racial slurs, and gang violence.
