Belgium's Serpentcult breaks out with a rough-and-ready take on doom metal with its Rise Above Records debut, WEIGHT OF LIGHT. With southern rock grittiness, Serpentcult delivers a sound that is part swamp rock, part doom metal, and all attitude. As recorded by Greg Chandler (Esoteric, Gutworm) ) WEIGHT OF LIGHT also carries a weight of thick, hammer-and-anvil riffs. Adding to the cauldron is an indignant female vocal performance, making this release a unique addition to the gloom-and-doom metal canon. If you were to take a death metal record and slow it down considerably, you'd end up with something that sounds quite similar musically to SerpentCult's 2008 release, Weight of Light. However, when the vocals kick in, it's a different story entirely, as singer Michelle Nocon turns out to be one of the few female screamers on the scene to front an extreme metal band (and who is obviously influenced quite a bit by Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson). But as you dig deeper into the album, it eventually becomes quite apparent that SerpentCult's preferred style is straight-ahead doom metal, as evidenced by such crawling/sluggish ditties as "Screams from the Deep," the title track, and "Arkanum." With riffs as thick as molasses, it'll be hard to escape from this musical tar pit trap, better known as Weight of Light. ~ Greg Prato Serpentcult Weight Of Light Songs Weight Of Light Review

| | Jesu Conqueror CD (2007)
Weight Of Light
$11.75 Personnel: Ted Parsons (drums, percussion). Recording information: Avalanche, England (2006); Mok Music Studios, Oslo, Norway (2006). On CONQUEROR, his second full-length album under the guise of Jesu, former Godflesh singer/guitarist Justin Broadrick builds on the shoegazer leanings of the SILVER EP, resulting in a hypnotic set of strikingly heavy indie rock. Featuring spare rhythms and buried vocals, the record finds Broadrick densely layering guitar and keyboard lines for a sound that is both minimal and disarmingly full. Often moving at a glacial pace (see the swirling title track and the epic "Weightless & Horizontal"), CONQUEROR's songs convey a certain sense of majesty as they slowly unfurl, rewarding the listener with a fascinating collection that easily ranks among the top post-rock releases of 2007. On the second Jesu full-length -- following up the critically acclaimed Silver EP -- Justin Broadrick, who has worn as many hats (artist, producer, engineer, DJ, etc.) and played with as many sounds as is possible in his career and the man isn't even half done -- does a near 180 at distancing himself from his influential days founding speed metal freaks Napalm ...

| | Mastodon Crack The Skye CD (2009)
Weight Of Light
$12.19 Mastodon: Brent Hinds (vocals, guitar, banjo); Troy Sanders (vocals, bass synthesizer, bass guitar); Bränn Dailor (vocals, drums, percussion); Bill Kelliher (guitars). Additional personnel: Richard Morris (Mellotron, synthesizer). Audio Mixer: Brendan O'Brien. Audio Remasterer: Bob Ludwig. Atlanta's Mastodon climbed to the top of the metal heap the old-fashioned way. Taking the template for success etched by Metallica, the band captured the imagination with a series of albums that offered potent heaviness and relentless experimentation. After graduating from respected indie Relapse, they released 2006's acclaimed BLOOD MOUNTAIN, an album with a fire motif/fantasy adventure concept that opened numerous doors both commercially and critically. Their latest, CRACK THE SKYE, completes their elemental cycle by focusing on "ether," while also serving as a tale of czarist Russia. The progressive metal elements that bled into their sound on BLOOD MOUNTAIN are pushed even further here, led once more by Brann Dailor's furiously technical drumming. As Dailor goes, so goes the band, and his stick work remains some ...
| | Cauldron Chained To The Nite CD (2009) Bonus CD; Limited Edition
Weight Of Light
$9.69 A throwback to the hard-partying heavy metal of the early 1980s, Toronto's Cauldron seem to have grown up on a steady diet of Dio-era Sabbath, Dokken, and Judas Priest, among others. CHAINED TO THE NITE makes no attempt to reinvent the wheel, but revels in the dirty details of this kind of frayed denim, black leather rock & roll. There's a sense of humor to songs like "Chained Up in Chains" and "Midnight Hour" that reveal a band fully aware of how goofy some of this stuff is, but it isn't stopping them from having a great time doing it. This Canadian group, featuring two former members of the better-named Goat Horn, are every bit as stuck in the past as the retro-thrash bands that have been popping up like zits the past few years. But rather than dwell in the land of palm-muted riffs and double bass drumming, Cauldron are all about reviving the other side of early-'80s metal: the NWOBHM sound of early (pre-Bruce Dickinson) Iron Maiden, Raven, Tygers of Pan Tang, ...
