Road Shows, Vol. 1 album by Sonny Rollins was released Oct 28, 2008 on the Doxy label. After Lester Young and before John Coltrane, perhaps the most influential popular tenor saxophonist remains Sonny Rollins. Road Shows, Vol. 1 songs (He's even played with the Rolling Stones. Road Shows, Vol. 1 album ) With a rich, piercing tone and a gift for brilliant, exhilarating improvisations, Rollins has thrilled generations of jazz fans. Road Shows, Vol. 1 CD music ROAD SHOWS, on Rollins's own label, Doxy (distributed by Emarcy), collects live recordings from 1980 through 2007. Backed by a crew of mostly younger players (younger than Rollins, at least), ROAD finds the saxophonist roaring in superb form, ranging from a trio lineup (with drummer Roy Haynes!) to sextet settings (with guitarist Bobby Broom). The occasional presence of Jerome Harris's rippling electric bass is a nice plus, too. Heard him in London many moons ago - great then, great now on this CD. Right off the jazz track now, living in North West Queensland, but ABC Classic FM (Australian ABC radio - streams live on the internet 10.30p.m.-00.30a.m. Fridays, 5-7 p.m. Sundays) keeps me going, with the help of CD Universe

Sonny Live!
This is a fine selection of seven tracks (71:40) by the sax master. These good recordings are from as far back as 1980, and as recent as 2007. Seeing him play live was the source of the only Sonny Rollins I've heard which was more magical. His form of improvisation can always be taken further, and this release has the words "Volume One" in it. Therefore, I want to give him room to take the listener further, and only gave it a 4 star rating.

If Sonny Picked Them...
If Sonny picked all of these performances, they must all be good. And they are! This is one great CD by a living mater of jazz. I will by volume 2 as soon as it comes out.
