Personnel: Enya (vocals, various instruments); Pat Farrell & the Believers (guitar, 12-string guitar). Audio Mixer: Nicky Ryan. Recording information: Aigle Studio. Photographer: Simon Fowler. Arrangers: Enya; Nicky Ryan. Unlike Enya's 2006 EP, CHRISTMAS SECRETS, with which it shares no tracks, AND WINTER CAME is not a traditional Christmas album. It's more impressionistic than most, placing a handful of Christmas songs such as "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" in the midst of a shimmering soundscape of keyboards, strings, and Enya's trademark overdubbed vocal chorales. The mostly original material does an exceptional job of evoking a comforting midwinter landscape without resorting to sleigh bells or other Christmas music clichés. Highlights include "White Is in the Winter Night," "Last Time By Moonlight," and the evocative, childlike "Trains and Winter Rains." AND WINTER CAME is an unusual but lovely addition to the Christmas music pantheon. In 2006 Enya released her most subtle and song-oriented album to date. Amarantine may have paled in comparison to Watermark or Shepherd Moons, but its under-produced (in Enya-world) balladry was a small leap forward for the reclusive Irish superstar. 2008's And Winter Came follows in the same footsteps as Amarantine, but it hints at the grandeur of earlier recordings, specifically 1994's Christmas EP. Enya's ferociously multi-tracked recording style lends itself well to the season, filling in the simplistic lyrical holes with small avalanches of vocal harmonies and the dated but reliable keyboard patches that have come to define the singer/composer's work over the years. Enya, lyricist Roma Ryan, and producer Nicky Ryan have crafted a pleasant little snow globe of an album that sounds exactly like one would expect from the longtime collaborators. For the most part the formula is intact, boasting a soft Edward Scissorhands-inspired intro, copious amounts of secular and non-secular ballads (all original), and two or three upbeat, midtempo jams to break the stillness. Of the former, the lovely and reverent "Come, O Come, Emmanuel" is the most effective, while the galloping "White Is in the Winter Night" leads the pack for the latter. There are copious amounts of "stars in the skies" and "bells ringing," and even a surprising left turn (maybe even a complete u-turn) near the end on "My! My! Time Flies!," a straight-up "Beatlesque" pop tune with drums and a screaming guitar solo that sounds like something off of a late-'60s Bee Gees record. As usual, Enya fans will be pleased with the results while non-believers will find that the same arguments against her are still valid, but in the end And Winter Came is an undeniably welcome addition to the holiday season, if only for its effortless, white, spray-painted pinecone elegance and potpourri-scented, gift shop comforts. ~ James Christopher Monger Enya And Winter Came... Songs And Winter Came... Music Review Average Rating: (3.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews And Winter Came, Most Elegantly Enya's music genre was always hard to define. Ripe with celtic harmony, polished lyering and composed with great care, her songs have various elements, speaking chiefly of deep and abstract content, rather than plain love or modern day fads. While 'Trains and Winter Rains' is a re-visited domain, with her well known sound and composition, her Christmas singles are redone, rather than blandly re-sung. These versions capture the season's spirit as well as any other renderings out there. Her range varies with the catchy 'My my Time Flies', where she pays homage to history, summarizing key points, with a homage to the Beatles. It also consists of guitar, of all things. A change indeed, for someone dedicated to her craft as Enya. That doesn't mean that she strayed from 'good music' she's known for, its only a sudden change, and one that anyone, old or young, will like. It is like a revisitation to the days of classic rock, well done too. With these new avenues explored, and classical ones in place, 'And WInter Came' is worth the buy. Try it, you will find it a good listening experience. Submitted by Ahmad (Toronto) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 4 of 6 found this helpful.
Nice! Much more than simply a Christmas album. Submitted by faust8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 4 of 7 found this helpful.
Winter did come, in shimmering silver! XD First and foremost, this album is a throw away from traditional reliance on sleigh bells and twinkle star anthems on the usual release of a Christmas record. Surprisingly, "And Winter Came" contains mellow riffs of violins, cello's and some hints of viola's together with her piano compositions too. Creating a wonderful sound landscape of white snow and dreamy silver paradise. Enya hits at number one when it comes to her creativity. With her voice and breathy vocals. This album adds a wonderful pantheon to quiet Christmas fires at home and hot chocolate! Thank you Enya for gracing us for your talent and exceptional musical magnificence! A Musical Mastepiece!! Her best recorded material for the 2000s. Every vocal and instrument shines and shimmers with such a calm beauty. I'm glad she decided to go with a more "wintery" theme than the restricitive same-old, same-old Christmas music. It makes you feel like you can listen to it any time of year. remix! what a disappointment! This is recycled music from her other albums.
Nothing to get excited about and certainly nothing to waste your money on. Submitted by Catherine (Renton WA USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.
