Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero are 2 fast-fingered, Dublin-based Mexicans with a unique sound created on acoustic guitars. Their music is difficult to define, straddling both world and rock, and often imbued with timeless Hispano-classical influences. The fire in it comes from their life-long passion for metal music. This DVD/CD set was recorded and filmed at Duo in Tokyo, Japan, March 2008. The DVD features 5 tracks from the show in 5.1 channel stereo. The CD includes 14 tracks and over 70 minutes of stunning and blistering live performances.

Rodrigo y Gabriela: Rodrigo Sanchez, Gabriela Quintero (acoustic guitar).
Personnel: Rodrigo y Gabriela (guitars).
Arranger: Rodrigo y Gabriela.
Mexican acoustic guitar team Rodrigo y Gabriela has been dazzling audiences with their fleet-fingered virtuosity since the early 2000s. LIVE IN JAPAN showcases the duo's unique blend of classical, Latin, and metal influences; lightning-fast interplay; and appealing melodic sense. The album features live performances of covers (Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" and Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven") and originals, and reveals the spell of Rodrigo y Gabriela's guitar-spun magic, which keeps audiences coming back for more.
Mexico City's Rodrigo Sanchez and Gabriela Quintero must think highly of themselves as talented instrumental musicians who like to jam fast, show off quite a bit, and cater to the baser instincts of an image conscious and viscerally driven rock type audience, even in Japan. When you get past the ego driven music presented here in what must be an atypical (for them) large concert hall engagement, you can easily hear two extremely talented musicians playing to a crowd, the patrons enthusiastically responding, and everyone enjoying themselves for an escapist hour. Having said that, Rodrigo y Gabriela are impressive musicians, barely losing a beat or fluffing fretted single-line runs, percussive chords, and occasionally amplified and effects driven inserts. Their single intent is to blow you away with their virtuosic licks and riffs, and they generally succeed. One noticeable aspect of this concert is that the guitarists stop frequently during songs, as if they are gathering themselves for the next salvo while their fans go wild -- the plant...run approach. Flamenco or jazz purists likely will see through the haze of trumped up tunes, as actual improvisation, intimacy, or subtleties are avoided except in select instances. Copping licks from rock tunes, Jimi Hendrix, and a trimmed version of "Stairway to Heaven" emphasizes this point. Still there are redeeming original moments in concept, as "O.K. Tokyo" eschews a funky blues mood, the 6/8 modal "Satori" is lower key and sweeter with stairstep progressions, "Vikingman" is closest to traditional flamenco by degrees with some neat interplay, and their flash point is muted during "One" with patient constructs, pronounced musicality and better harmonics. A version of Dave Brubeck's "Take Five" sounds rushed tempo wise, but is understated, not brash, despite the fast pace. Their lone extended piece over eleven minutes, "Foc" utilizes a spritely repeat melody, stopped and started with the most dazzling display of chops. At the end of the program each presents a solo piece, where Gabriela proves the sensitive guitarist, while Rodrigo is the driving force and hot rod pilot. The operative description for Rodrigo Y Gabriela is pyrotechnics, so if speed king and queen type virtuosity (they are virtuosos) is your thing, then this should appeal to you as might Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, or Allan Holdsworth. ~ Michael G. The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and impossible to ignore. 11:11 features 11 new compositions, dedicated ...

Gregory Isaacs Cool Ruler CD  (1978)

Live In Japan
CD $17.35  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Personnel includes: Gregory Isaacs (vocals); Ranchie, Bingy Bunny, Chinna (guitar); Bobby Ellis, Tommy McCook, Herman Marquis (horns); Ansell Collins (keyboards); Robert Shakespeare, Ernest Wilson (bass); Sly Dunbar (drums); The Heptones (background vocals).
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Recorded at Dynamic Sounds, Kingston, Jamaica.
In 1978, reggae vocalist Gregory Isaacs released COOL RULER, a title that also served as the performer's nickname. Although the album, unlike some of his earlier '70s offerings, didn't prove to be an international success, it received critical acclaim and became recognized as one of Isaacs's finest records. After hearing this solid 10-song set, it's easy to understand why the disc is so revered. For one thing, Isaacs's distinctively smooth vocals are backed by pitch-perfect contributions from a cadre of top-notch session players, including bassist Robbie Shakespeare and drummer Sly Dunbar. The percolating rhythms and buoyant melodies are ideal for Isaacs's lover's-rock style, but rather than stick to a predominantly romantic mood (a la LOVE IS OVERDUE), he mixes in a refreshing amount of social commentary on tracks such as the shuffling "Party in the Slum" and the rural lament "Word of the Farmer." The result is an album that makes a wonderfully like-minded companion piece to another classic record from that year--Bob Marley & the Wailers' KAYA.
In the murky waters of reggae releases, there are few darker depths to plumb than Gregory Isaacs' canon. Over the years, the veteran artist has tossed literally hundreds of sets onto the shelves, a bewildering bundle further complicated by confusing titles and reissues under new names. Take this set for example. Cool Ruler brings together in their entirety two of Isaacs' albums from the early '90s -- No Luck and I'll Never Trust You Again. Both sets appeared again later in the decade, Trust ...

In a career that's been getting more and more pastoral as time moves on, the long-running (since 1982!), sporadically-recorded, highly influential Pastels have made their most pastoral sounding record yet with 2009's TWO SUNSETS. Teamed with like-minded innocents from Japan the Tenniscoats, the combined group (aided by Teenage Fanclub's Gerard Love and various friends like Bill Wells and Norman Blake) ramble through twelve songs like a group of friends sitting around in the late afternoon sunshine having the relaxed and peaceful time of the summer. Some of the tunes are fully formed pop numbers, like the truly lovely and warm Vivid Youth or their cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's About You, some are short, almost soundtrack-y musical fragments with melodies that drift aimlessly and beautifully like leaves in the breeze. The mixing of the two styles makes for a varied album that flows from start to finish like a quiet brook through a wooded glen.
