Fillmore: The Last Days Movie Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) Ego document Bill Graham Some groups that seldom appear on DVD like Quicksilver Messenger, New Riders of The Purple Sage and above all It's A Beautiful Day were represented on this DVD. Alas it turns out to be a movie of Bill Graham in which he tells us all the ins and outs of organizing this Filmore Event. There is less time for the music. Some groups are almost faded away by this presumptious guy with all his opinions. And why is the only thing you see of the New Riders of the Purple Sage a rehearsal with guest musician Jerry Garcia in front of the camera? This man is already performing later on with his own band! Also the magical group It'A Beautiful Day (that I never saw playing live) with their famous song White Bird is for a big part of their performance replaced by other images. Rocklover Billy: how could you do that? Still there is some enjoyment on this DVD: the best performance of Santana that I have ever seen, without Billy interfering with his vain talk. Goodbye, Bill Graham This collection is as much about the musical empressario as it is about the closing of Fillmore, a music venue that became synonymous with the San Francisco scene. Bill Graham provided the SFO music scene a venue that was just helter skelter before him. There was Avalon Ballroom, on Sutter St, and there was Fillmore or Market & Van Ness. I don't remember when they switched to Winterland, but that was called Fillmore too. Only now is the Fillmore music venue on Fillmore St, near Geary. As for this DVD, what do you want for being as old as it is, nearly 40 years ago. The sound quality is excellent, the visual collages are artsy, not too much about the light shows, except Mr. Graham's discussions about them with the Santana people. Overall, it was a good historical documentation of that wild, wonderful time, and Graham gets to wax sentimentally about Utopia & whether or not it was found. Personally, I think hard drugs got in the way of what could have been. Submitted by steven.west (Pelham, AL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
60's live forever at the Fillmore! The essence of pure rock and roll captured by the genius of Bill Graham. I was at the final show and this DVD certainly gives proper respect to a great time, a great venue and a great man. The bands and music are timeless. No wonder the music from this ere still thrives considering the crap that's passed for rock and roll today. You won't be disappointed. Get it! Far out, man! Fillmore: The Last Days DVD Legendary rock impresario Bill Graham closed the Fillmore West in early summer 1971 with five nights of all-star concerts, the last curtain going down on July 4. The storied San Francisco venue had become an institution, an integral part of the West Coast music scene of the ’60s and, now, an essential element of the mythology of rock ’n’ roll. Always the showman, Graham made sure the Fillmore West was sent off in a blaze of glory, spotlighting bands—including the Grateful Dead and Santana—that rose to fame at the hall. The madness leading up to the shows and the concerts themselves were filmed for FILLMORE: THE LAST DAYS, a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at a fascinating moment in rock history and a showcase for great performances by iconic artists who epitomized “the San Francisco Sound.” Originally released in 1972 and long out-of-print, the documentary film makes its DVD debut with Rhino’s landmark reissue.

Fillmore: The Last Days DVD
$7.59 Audio Remasterer: Bob Irwin. Jefferson Airplane were less focused in 1969 than they had been in the Summer of Love two years before. Recorded at the Fillmore East, these performances find the Airplane coming off their most recent album, Volunteers, released a month earlier, with the band a lot looser (drug use aside) and fractured. The factions in the group were presenting themselves during performances, and this set is no exception. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Cassidy connected and jammed like they would have been just as content without the vocals getting in the way, Grace Slick and Paul Kantner combined their voices and played off each other, while Marty Balin screamed and crammed lyrics together, leaving little space for anyone else. During this era, harmonizing seemed out ...
