Standard Screen; Soundtrack English; Deluxe Edition; Amaray Case Clint Eastwood stars in one of his most popular roles, as Harry Callahan, a determined cop hunting down the psychotic Scorpio. But just when he thinks the case is closed, the chase begins again. This violent and controversial hit paved the way for several sequels and a slew of urban cop movies. A tremendously controversial film, both decried as an apologia for fascism and hailed as the solution to a decade of rising crime, DIRTY HARRY propelled Clint Eastwood's career into the stratosphere while adding another archetype to join his Man with No Name in film iconography. Clint stars as Harry Callahan, a truculent San Francisco police detective well known for his vicious take-no-prisoners attitude toward criminals. With the city of San Francisco being terrorized by the psychotic killer known only as Scorpio (Andrew Robinson), Harry is assigned by the mayor (John Vernon) and Lt. Bressler (Harry Guardino) to try to stop him, pairing him with reluctantly accepted new partner Chico (Reni Santoni). Scorpio kidnaps a 14-year-old girl and buries her alive, demanding a $200,000 ransom for her return. Harry is to bring him the money--alone. What follows is one of the most exciting ransom deliveries in film history. The prototype for most of the action films through the rest of the century, DIRTY HARRY rises far above most of them due mostly to an excellent script and Eastwood's gripping acting. That said, the main character's contemptuous attitude toward the Miranda law seems far more damning now that it did in the early 1970s. Theatrical release: December 23, 1971.
Shooting location: San Francisco, Mill Valley, and Larkspur, CA.
Clint Eastwood replaced Frank Sinatra, who had other commitments.
Don Siegel commented, "DIRTY HARRY is a wall-to-wall carpet of violence."
Andrew Robinson, who plays the killer, was an avowed pacifist at the time of the film's production; he was so unaccustomed to firearms that an instructor had to be hired to teach him how to shoot.
Dirty Harry Quotes/Excerpts: "I know what you're thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five? Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, I've kind of lost track myself. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself a question. 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?--Dirty Harry (Clint Eastwood) to Scorpio (Andrew Robinson) Dirty Harry Reviews: "[I]mpactful for how it cold-cocked the movies' good-guy cop persona."
-- Premiere Staff, Premiere "Andrew Robinson gives an indelible performance..."
-- Daniel Webb, Total Film "Tautly directed by Don Siegel, it's a terrific, politically polarizing thriller."-- Clark Collis, Entertainment Weekly Dirty Harry | List Price | $14.97 (You save $5.12) | | Studio | Warner Home Video | | Orig Year | 1971 | | All Time Sales Rank | 22106 | | CD Universe Part number | 7761764 | | Catalog number | 1000036032 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Sep 09, 2008 | | Rating | R (MPAA) | | Additional Info | Deluxe Edition | | Movie Details | Color; Deluxe Edition |
Dirty Harry DVD In a signature role, Clint Eastwood plays a streetwise San Francisco police detective who gets the job done. A rooftop sniper (Andy Robinson) named Scorpio has killed twice. Harry Callahan will nail the perp... one way or the other... no matter what "the system" prescribes. Filming on location, director Don Siegel made the city by the Bay a vital part of one of the best police thrillers ever made.

$10.29 The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue.

$32.75 Director Goro Taniguchi (INFINITE RYVIUS, S-CRY-ED) fashions another imaginative take on intergalactic space travel in his sci-fi series PLANETES. In the year 2075, travel between the earth, moon, and various space stations has become a routine part of human existence. But the increased traffic leaves behind floating pieces of debris that present a deadly hazard for traveling starships and must be cleared by a squad of hardworking debris collectors. As the collectors' newest recruit, idealistic Ai Tanabe quickly loses her enthusiasm for outer space when she joins the Half-Section unit and meets her cynical new partner, Hachimaki. But Tanabe soon discovers that hauling in space debris is not only dull and monotonous--it carries with it a unique set of difficulties and dangers. PLANETES avoids the wild, fantastical tropes of much sc-fi anime in favor of realistic hard science that emphasizes character development and gorgeously rendered animation. This collection presents the whole series in its entirety.

$9.44 Directed by Kirk Jones (WAKING NED DEVINE) with a screenplay by star Emma Thompson, this film is based on the Nurse Matilda series by Christianne Grant. Widower Cedric Brown (Colin Firth) is at his wits' end. His seven children have just scared off their 17th nanny since their mother passed away and seem to have exhausted all local resources. Then, as if by magic, Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) appears out of the blue, literally warts and all. This governess has a different approach to minding Mr. Brown's wild brood; each tap of her walking stick seems to work magic and impart a much-needed lesson. Although the children are determined to chase her away, they soon discover how much they really need her.
But the Brown family has another problem. Stern Great Aunt Adelaide (Angela Lansbury), the late Mrs. Brown's aunt, has been supporting the family and has issued an ultimatum to Cedric: he must marry by month's end or she will cut off all financial support. Cedric is reluctant to marry just anyone, and his options appear to be limited to the garish widow Selma Quickly (Celia Imrie). Will he marry to keep his family intact, or have his children learned enough to help him find love again? Firth and an understated Thompson are in fine form, and Lansbury, Imrie, Derek Jacobi, and Peter Barlow are a delight in their supporting roles, as are the children. The costumes and set are infused with vivid colors that lend a larger-than-life, fanciful feel to the film, adding to the magic.
