With his silken, suave, self-assured vocals recalling a cross between Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick Jr. has a natural voice for celebrating Christmastime. So it's no surprise that with the 2008 holiday season in full swing, Connick returns with his third holiday record, the sprightly WHAT A NIGHT! A CHRISTMAS ALBUM. As it is with his non-Yuletide LPs, WHAT A NIGHT! is a medley of his nimble, elegant takes on time-tested classics and disarming originals. The set opens on Connick's vibrant re-envisioning of "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year," heavy on exotic percussion and redolent of his New Orleans roots, yet based in its original impassioned swing. The title track, a ballad penned by Connick, shimmers with open-fire-roasted chestnuts warmth and collective cheer. Perhaps the most beguiling moment is his gentle, unadorned, unearthly version of the melancholy "I'll Be Home For Christmas," a unique yet unassuming take on the well-traveled tune.

 Great album!
Harry Connick Jr. has done it again on his 3rd Christmas cd. The standards and some great new songs that are soon to be classics like "Christmas Day". You will enjoy this cd from beginning to end!

Another great piece of Harry for the holidays
Back in 1990, I remember all the doubters saying, "He'll never last, just a Sinatra copycat." Well, did Sinatra play the piano, do his own arrangements or write his own songs?
Connick does all these things. He does them well, and here he brings his own unique style to songs we've heard so often that they are in danger of being boring. Not on this album. But for me, the two biggest achievements are that he gets his daughter on the album and it sounds good, rather than sentimental and tacky; and that his own songs are indistinguishable from the classics.
It's quirky, and it's not Andy Williams or Perry Como. Sometimes, he's so far off the beat that it's a wonder the band find him again. But it just works in a way that no other singer could make it work.
