Kaeli Jensen, singer/songwriter/composer, has spent the past few years refining her skills while performing locally at several different venues and showcases. She is now being requested to do shows out of state as well. This summer she has been requested to perform at the Cherry Hill Resort in Kaysville, Utah. She was asked to do a performance at Brigham Young Historical Park in Salt Lake City for their Summer Concert Series of 2007. Many vie for this much-coveted spot with its central, downtown location and its very exclusive practices for hiring performers. At an autumn showcase in 2006, Kaeli was chosen out of several artists to do a performance and interview for local television station CW30 and their program, “Spotlight Utah.”Time and time again, Kaeli’s talent rises above other artists giving her opportunities to perform. In July of 2006, the South Salt Lake Events Manager Tim Williams chose Kaeli Jensen above the multitude of other artists desiring to perform at their fourth of July celebration, Freedom Festival, to perform a forty-five minute set with her original music, including the emotional and heartfelt song, American to Me, an original song written by Kaeli as a reaction to the 9/11 tragedy. Her song shows the maturity and depth of passion Kaeli possesses and it expresses how deeply it affected her life while passing by most other young people her age.Ms. Jensen has been performing since she was a young girl and has participated in performances with such prestigious artists as Kurt Bestor, Peter Breinholt, Sam Cardon, and Jessie Clark Funk. Even now at her current age, still considered young by industry standards, Kaeli could easily be considered a seasoned performer, traveling to such faraway places as Japan as a featured soloist. Kaeli captured the attention of the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee, along with Kenny Ortega, who included her in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2002 Olympics. With eleven years piano instruction and six years of songwriting, Kaeli has produced her first self-titled demo CD filled with melodies straight from her heart. It is available for retail sale and a big hit at her concerts. Her abilities were recognized in 2003 when she was part of the team to win the grand prize in the Yoko Ono “Dream Power” original music competition. Kaeli Jensen is a big surprise in a small package. She emanates a genuine light that can only come from within. The marketing department at Warner Brothers must have really wanted to get a jump on the holiday season when they released Faith Hill's 2008 Christmas album, JOY TO THE WORLD, in September. Hill's set of carols and traditional songs may not suit the late summer, but that doesn't make JOY TO THE WORLD any less of a treat. As albums like BREATHE and FIREFLIES proved, Hill has no problem crossing over to mainstream audiences, and this Christmas set (the singer's first) should strengthen that appeal. If the song selection itself isn't surprising--including the usual fare like "What Child is This," "O Come All Ye Faithful," and "Silent Night"--the arrangements are. A large orchestra, featuring brass, strings, reeds, percussion, and two different choirs, give these renditions a full, sweeping flavor reminiscent of the big bands of the 1940s and `50s. The album also includes an original single, "A Baby Changes Everything," which features one of Hill's most compelling performances.

1951 was a breakthrough year for Hank Williams. He had a string of moderate country hits already under his belt, but the release that year of his version of an old jazz age novelty tune called "Lovesick Blues" suddenly made him a big star. It also meant his touring schedule increased, but he still found time that year to slip into Nashville and prerecord shows for the Mother's Best Flour Company. These good-natured and intimate performances were cut to acetate discs and then played over the air on Nashville's WSM radio station. Brittle, disposable, and made for only a few plays, these acetates were then shelved and forgotten until they were literally rescued from the trash in the '70s by an alert WSM employee. In all, 72 of these shows survived, containing some 143 songs, and this three-disc set is the second installment in Time Life's CD preservation of this amazing treasure trove. The performances are intimate and relaxed, and Williams tackles an amazingly varied set list, singing old mountain ballads, hymns, cowboy tunes, and delivers recitations of parlor poems and other various cautionary tales as well. What emerges is a full, rounded portrait of Williams at his creative and commercial peak. "Lovesick Blues" is here, along with fine versions of "I Can't Help It (If I'm Still in Love with You)," "A Mansion on the Hill," and the Williams-composed gospel classic "I Saw the ...

The Lincoln, NE psych-folk and rock duo of Denny Zager and Richard Evans scored big in 1969 with their only hit single, the apocalyptic acid folk of "In the Year 2525 (Exordium Terminus)." (To be honest, it's shocking that none of the great unwashed tribes have covered it yet; after all, it's still timely.) A quick moving amalgam of mariachi horns, strings, and beautifully articulated (if a tad overblown) orchestration, the track measures the entire run of man's reign from 2525 to 10,000 A.D. in three minutes and 20 seconds. A beautifully constructed mess of psychedelic folk and soundtrack anthem, it soared on the charts and left quite an impression on masses of hippies still trying to figure out their place in the Age of Aquarius. Evans claimed to have written it in half an hour, and by the sound of the rest of their output -- most of it here on this two-fer by Wounded Bird (done in the usual ghetto style of barely enough work to get by in the presentation) -- that was the entire worth of their inspiration. The rest of both albums is simply lame, on the barely tolerable lilting end of '60s nonsense that can't make up its mind whether to be the Lovin' Spoonful, the cast of Hair, or Jimmy Webb. That may be the fault of producers (who remain uncredited), but more than likely it's the insipid songwriting. Check the single on a Billboard comp form 1969 and be done with it. ~ Thom Jurek

These tunesmiths hail from the west coast of Canada and compose melodious concoctions steeped in folk, brewed in the dense coniferous backwoods of their strange minds.
