The kind of cult hero who could have emerged only in 1970s England, Kevin Coyne was a quirky singer/songwriter whose eccentric, yelping vocal style was surprisingly expressive and even moving, suggesting a stylistic triangulation somewhere between Captain Beefheart, John Lennon, and Joe Cocker. This 1975 concert finds him at his peak, performing material from some of his most acclaimed albums, like MARJORY RAZORBLADE and MATCHING HEAD AND FEET. He's backed by one of his finest bands, including `60s blues-rock legend Zoot Money on keyboards and a pre-Police Andy Summers on guitar, and Coyne delivers powerful howling versions of such tunes as the driving, bluesy "Eastbourne Ladies" and the stomping, somewhat Beefheart-ish "Saviour."
Although relatively unknown in the U.S. Kevin Coyne is quite a talent as a songwriter and musician, and an emotionally direct vocalist who was influenced by the blues, but not bound by that style. This concert from August 1975 features Zoot Money on pia

$33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained ...

On Air music CDs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of ...

On Air songs
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially ...

$16.59 In some circles, Mickey Jupp is something of a minor legend, a roots rocker with excellent taste and a cutting wit, best heard on the songs "Switchboard Susan" and "You'll Never Get Me Up in One of Those," both covered by Nick Lowe. Basher's endorsement is a ...

| | Zager & Evans In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)/Zager & Evans CD (2008) Exordium Terminus
On Air music CDs
$11.69 The Lincoln, NE psych-folk and rock duo of Denny Zager and Richard Evans scored big in 1969 with their only hit single, the apocalyptic acid folk of "In the Year 2525 (Exordium Terminus)." (To be honest, it's shocking that none of the great unwashed tribes have covered it yet; after all, it's still timely.) A quick moving amalgam of mariachi horns, strings, and beautifully articulated (if a tad overblown) orchestration, the track measures the entire run of man's reign from 2525 to 10,000 A.D. in three minutes and 20 seconds. A beautifully constructed mess of psychedelic folk and soundtrack anthem, it soared on the charts and left quite an impression on masses of hippies still trying to figure out their place in the Age of Aquarius. Evans claimed to have written it in half an hour, and by the sound of the rest of their output -- most of it here on this two-fer by Wounded Bird (done in the usual ghetto style of barely enough work to get by in the presentation) -- that was the entire worth of their inspiration. The rest of both albums is simply lame, on the barely tolerable lilting end of '60s nonsense that can't make up its mind whether to be the Lovin' Spoonful, the cast of Hair, or Jimmy Webb. That may be the fault of producers (who remain uncredited), ...
