This 2002 live recording finds the 21st-century King Crimson in an improvisatory mode. While there are a couple of full-fledged compositions, including the title track from their album THE CONSTRUKCTION OF LIGHT and this collection's own title track, "Level Five," much of the rest harks back to the band's mid-'70s heyday when free-wheeling improv was one of its mightiest tools. Most of the personnel were different then, but mainstay Robert Fripp sounds equally at home bashing ideas around with Adrian Belew, Trey Gunn, and Pat Mastelotto.
Personnel: Adrian Belew (vocals, guitar); Robert Fripp, Trey Gunn (guitar); Pat Mastelotto (drums).

Level Five album
$15.79 When Frank Zappa died in 1993, he had spent much of his remaining time and energy completing a number of projects before the end finally came. Why the majority of them are still unreleased as of late 2006 is anybody's guess, but perhaps the long awaited release of Trance-Fusion is a good sign. Trance-Fusion is another collection of guitar solos, forming something of a trilogy with the Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar set and Guitar. As FZ fans know, Frank had his favorite vehicles for soloing and careful listening to the albums as a group gives you a good idea which songs these are. "Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar," "Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar Some More," "The Return of the Son of Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar" (Shut Up 'n Play Yer Guitar), "Systems of Edges" (Guitar), and now "A Cold Dark Matter" are all excerpted from the solo section of "Inca Roads." "Variations on the Carlos Santana Secret Chord Progression," "That Ol' G Minor Thing Again," and now "Scratch & Sniff" are all lifted from "City of Tiny Lites." "The Torture Never Stops," "Easy Meat," "The Black Page" and a couple others have also contributed multiple tracks to this series. So why pick up Trance-Fusion if you've already got the others? Well, as the hardcore know, Frank was an endlessly creative soloist who often referred to his solos as "instant compositions." On three successive nights, Zappa could take the same two-chord vamp to three entirely different universes. In 1988 he incorporated some radical new tones and new playing techniques, so even the same vehicle/vamp can sound ...

| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Level Five music CDs
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter century. The results impressively continue where Truce left off, as Bruce brings his distinctive croon/moan to bluesy, riff-oriented tunes dominated by Trower's silvery guitar runs. Gary Husband fills the drum slot adequately if inconspicuously, but his contributions are mixed so far under Bruce's vocals and Trower's guitar that they are secondary. The previous two releases called in Trower's old Procol Harum lyricist Keith Reid and Bruce collaborator Peter Brown to write the words, but Bruce and Trower pen these 11 songs without outside assistance. Most tunes such as "Lives of Clay," a barely concealed rewrite of Cream's "Politician" lick, revisit familiar territory, and clearly these guys are not out to expand any boundaries. Bruce, who has had serious medical problems since they last recorded, sounds terrific -- strong and vibrant, even if a few tunes such as the ...

Level Five album
$18.99 ***The Strad Magazine, February, 09:Tomoko Omura's Visions is a fine example of jazz violin for those who want to explore beyond the Grappelli genre. Omura is a strong improviser: snappy phrasing, harmonic scope and a willingness to open out run through the music, whether it it post-bop or fusion-tinged. At the same time, the sound is unforced, understated but not limp, clean but not prissy. Bassist Dan Carpel is no less laid-back, while the drums provide drive in the more up-tempo numbers. The overall effect is a fresh group sound that mixes a contemporary feel and established jazz idioms with considerable success. For the violin, this is a rarity.----------------------------------------------------------***Tomoko Omura “Visions” Liner Notes:Welcome to an incredible album by the extraordinary young jazz violinist and composer Tomoko Omura."Visions" is a tribute to seven of the finest jazz violinists of all time, and in it,Tomoko does more than just honor these gentlemen...she really gets to the emotional ...
