ELEKTRIK documents King Crimson's tour of Japan in support of their 2003 album THE POWER TO BELIEVE, which was still their most recent studio recording at the time of this concert disc's reissue in '09. There's no looking back on past glories here; the set list is almost entirely from POWER TO BELIEVE and its 2000 predecessor, THE CONSTRUKCTION OF LIGHT. As such, it finds Robert Fripp, Adrian Belew, and company working their patented whisper-to-a-scream dynamics like the master craftsmen they are -- rock maniacs one moment and subtle ambient experimentalists the next.
Personnel: Adrian Belew (vocals, guitar); Trey Gunn (guitar, fretless guitar); Robert Fripp (guitar, sound effects); Pat Mastelotto (keyboards, drums).
Audio Mixer: Machine.

| | Porcupine Tree In Absentia CD (2002)
Elektrik CD music
$8.55 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree are unquestionably one of the UK's most inspired and inventive rock groups. In Absentia is their eagerly anticipated Lava Records debut. Digipak. 2002.

| | Porcupine Tree Deadwing CD (2005)
Elektrik music CDs
$9.75 Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual.
Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the ...

| | Collectable King Crimson: Live At Shepherds Bush Empire, London, 1996 CDs (2008)
Elektrik album
$13.49 The two-plus hour concert contained within this double-CD package serves up a most effective link from the King Crimson of the 1960s, '70s, and '80s with the double-trio resurrection that boasted the unified talents of Adrian Belew (guitar/voice/words), Bill Bruford (percussion/drums), Robert Fripp (guitar), Trey Gunn (touch guitar/voice), Tony Levin (basses/Chapman stick/voice), and Pat Mastelotto (percussion/drums). Both sets of their July 1, 1996 performance at the 2,000 seat Shepherds Bush Empire in London are offered in a superb stereo recording that bristles with the constant transfer between players and attendees alike. However, prior to the full ensemble even having the chance to make it to the stage, it is announced that Fripp will play a solo Soundscape in lieu of the support act -- the California Guitar Trio. The "Introductory Soundscape" spills from Fripp with a buoyancy that foreshadows the formidable program to follow. As the cover of Pierre Favre's "Prism" will bookend at the close, the likewise percussive "Conundrum" kickstarts the proceedings as the rest of the band ready ...
