| | Yo-Yo Ma Plays Ennio Morricone CD (2006) SACD Hybrid
Soundtrack
$15.19 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Listening to the music of Ennio Morricone is a joy for any music lover. Listening to his music as played by Yo-Yo Ma borders on the sublime. Morricone is an iconic film composer, a master melodist whose unique scores are characterized by his bold use of unusual musical techniques, sounds, and textures. The term "spaghetti western" would have less significance without his distinctive contributions. Yo-Yo Ma is a musician in a class by himself. He's an extraordinarily gifted cellist of enormous intellect and a fearless explorer of a broad musical landscape, who seems determined to prove that hardly any genre exists within which he can't excel.
It's evident from the very first notes of YO-YO MA PLAYS ENNIO MORRICONE that this was a labor of love for both artists. Ma is at his most expressive as he wraps his luminous tone around some of the most ...

| | Roger Daltrey Gold CDs (2006) Remastered
Soundtrack
$14.89 Issued in 2006, this well-selected two-disc set features a generous collection of solo tracks by Who frontman Roger Daltrey. Drawing largely from his 1970s and '80s albums, GOLD presents the mega-voiced Brit in a surprisingly poppy mode on songs such as the jaunty "One Man Band" and the emotive "Give It All Away" (both penned by Leo Sayer), and in a harder rocking style on the majestic "After the Fire" (written by Who mastermind Pete Townshend) and the surging "Under a Raging Moon." The anthology is rounded out by the charismatic singer's energetic live renditions of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run" and Who classics such as "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Baba O'Riley," making this the definitive Daltrey compilation.

| | Five Heartbeats CD (1991) Original Soundtrack
Soundtrack
$8.49 The soundtrack of the 1991 Fox/Robert Townsend film about the travails of a fictional '60s soul music vocal group includes the hit ballad "A House Is Not a Home" performed by The Dells, whom Townsend consulted with on the film. Lead singer Marvin Junior, one of the most underrated voices in pop music, poignantly delivers the melancholy lyrics. After 7 had a Top 10 R&B smash with the smooth as silk "Nights Like This." There's plenty of retro touches on the album. "Baby Stop Running Around" has Temptations-ish James Jamerson-inspired bassline. The mid-tempo jam "In the Middle" sounds like The Spinners circa '70s. Patti Labelle intensely sings "We Haven't Finished Yet." Unfortunately, young Tressa Thomas' ...

| | Terje Rypdal Singles Collection CD (1988)
Soundtrack
$15.55 The title is partly intended in jest, none of these ten songs were actually singles. However, Norwegian guitarist Terje Rypdal with his young band the Chasers, is at his most hook-filled rocking here. Recorded in 1988 and released the following year, this is the most successful of his several albums with the tight little combo (other titles were the two previous releases, CHASER and BLUE). Rypdal's playing, whiling recalling Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, also is rich with the funky and jagged riffing associated with Miles Davis's seventies recordings. The rhythm section of Audun Kleive and Bjorn Kjellemer are powerful and relentless (listen to "Sprott" and be convinced). The keyboard textures provided by Allan Dangerfield add depth and atmosphere, and he also wrote ...
| | Chill Out Cafe, Vol. 4 CD (2000)
Soundtrack
$24.45 Irma's Chill out Cafe series features downtempo dance music with a bit of Balearic flair performed by various artists. The Italian label releases many collections such as this, and though most tend to be more jazz-orientated, all are generally of high quality, not necessarily featuring popular artists but generally featuring impressive music. Some of the songs featured on the forth volume of the Chill Out Cafe series include In Da Gladiaz's "Safara," LTJ X Perience's "Feel My Soul," OHM Guru's "Shaping Lights," Don Carlos' "The Sun Is Shining," Cybophonia's "Tribute," and seven more. ~ Jason Birchmeier
