Music For A Saturday Evening album
$12.05 After a quarter century apart, the core line-up of the jazz quartet Return to Forever--Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clark, and Al Di Meola--reunited for a world tour in 2008. This remarkable concert film captures the foursome on stage at Montreux, playing bewitching renditions of "Vulcan Worlds," "Sorceress," "Romantic Warrior," and many others.
The band was at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the 70s and were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great Chick Corea. Return To Forever hit their commercial and artistic peak with a string of albums in the mid-seventies featuring the line-up of Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley ...

| | Frank Sinatra Nothing But The Best CD (2008) Remastered
Music For A Saturday Evening music CDs
$15.65 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording of "Body and Soul." Diehard Sinatra fans will likely own most of this material, yet as a greatest hits set (albeit covering the Reprise years only) NOTHING BUT THE BEST lives up to its title.

| | Robben Ford Soul On Ten CD (2009)
Music For A Saturday Evening songs
$15.29 Some of guitarist Robben Ford's weaknesses, such as song composition and vocals, are rectified or at least made less obvious, on this predominantly live release. On his fourth release for the Concord label, Ford is able to cherrypick better material from inconsistent albums, unearth choice covers, and generally broaden the music with his fiery playing. This, along with the natural energy ...

Music For A Saturday Evening CD music
$7.59 Michael Hedges is considered by many one of the most important innovators of the acoustic guitar. His total dedication to the acoustic guitar enabled him to develop a new approach to the instrument that transcended anything done before. He could sound like two--at times even three--guitarists playing at once, and his compositions drew on a wide variety of influences, from the earthy to the academic. While he is usually associated with the new age movement that flourished in the '80s and early '90s (having recorded on the flagship Windham Hill label), the ...

| | Cannonball Adderley Somethin' Else Vinyl LP (1958) Bonus CD
Music For A Saturday Evening CD music
$19.65 The Rudy Van Gelder Edition of SOMETHIN' ELSE includes an essay by Bob Blumenthal.
The track "Bangoon" is the correct title for the track "Allison's Uncle" that was originally included as a bonus on previous editions of SOMETHIN' ELSE.
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Rudy Van Gelder.
This is part of the Blue Note Rudy Van Gelder Editions series.
When alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, a high school band director from Florida, passed through New York with brother Nat during a school break, he found more excitement than he was counting on. After Julian offered to sit in for a late reedman, the session's leader, bassist Oscar Pettiford confronted him with the challenging changes of "I'll Remember April," at a breakneck tempo designed to humiliate the young upstart. Instead, Adderley responded with a solo that became the talk of the town; within days, his recording career had begun; and within a year he was able to give up his teaching job to front a full-time band.
Adderley gave up his own band in 1957 when he had the opportunity to become a sideman in Miles Davis' epic ensemble with John Coltrane, resulting in some of the greatest jazz recordings of all time (including MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE). Davis returned the favor in March of 1958, appearing as a sideman on Adderley's all-star quintet date for Blue Note, and the resulting session is indeed SOMETHIN' ELSE.
Both horn players are at their peak of lyrical invention, crafting gorgeous, flowing blues lines on the title tune and "One For Daddy-O," as the Hank Jones/Sam Jones/Art Blakey rhythm team creates a taut, focused groove (pianist Hank Jones' sly, intuitive orchestrations are studies of harmonic understatement). Adderley's lush, romantic improvisation on "Dancing In The Dark" is worthy of Charlie Parker or Johnny Hodges, while the band refurbishes "Autumn Leaves" and "Love For Sale" into personal cliche-free swingers. And "Alison's Uncle" puts a boppish coda on SOMETHIN' ELSE, one of the most gloriously laid-back blowing sessions of the hard bop era.
