| A Merry Christmas and a Blessed Yule Loreena takes many old, traditional carols and adds a flavor that transports listeners back to a medieval period of wassail and carolers begging for food and the goodwill of their neigbors. There is a subtle mixture of pagan and Christian elements found quite often in early Christmas music, and Loreena brings them to the ears of those willing to listen. This CD offers a haunting from the Ghosts of Christmas Past through the praises of Christ's birth and man's redemption as well as the concept of the pagan belief of winter always holding the promise of life and greenery on the wheel of the seasons. Overall, Loreena presents a Christmas past entwined with the old beliefs and Christian beliefs (both of which are essentially the same in regard to everlasting life) through the old Christmas Carols praising our saviour's birth and promising life in the darkest time of the year. | The story continues Some artists, such as Enya, find a formula and stick to it. In her case, whilst each album is quite nice, the only real difference between albums is the cover design. This may give purchasers the security of knowing beforehand what to expect, but it cam make the continual similarity of product rather boring. I regret that this now seems to apply to LMcK. Whilst her earlier albums, notably, "the mask...." and "the book...." were refreshing, original, and powerful, by the time we arrive at A Midwinter Nights Dream", I find the formula is wearing thin. In itself the album is a great work. Production, musicians, and all associated work is of the usual very high McKennett standard. I just wish she would introduce something exciting into her next work By RMT (Newcastle, Australia) |
| sublime hauntingly beautiful music, so well done, too. By grifrin (New Hampshire) |
