Dead to Me doesn't mess with success on the five-song EP LITTLE BROTHER. San Francisco punk lifer and former One Man Army member Jack Dalrymple knows how to put together melodic punk songs with heart and grit without sacrificing pop appeal. The title track flirts with reggae like vintage Clash--or even the Police--before going all out in its final minute. Dalrymple's voice is surprisingly versatile: gentle when it needs to be, but rough at the right time, augmented by dueling harmonies with bassist/vocalist Chicken. Listeners looking for the spirit of '77 can start right here.
When a band takes over two years to follow up its debut album, most would anticipate no less than a full-length record -- and a damn good one at that. Dead to Me has admittedly failed at meeting the first part of those expectations by only crafting enough songs for an EP, but whatever is lacking in quantity, they've easily satisfied with the quality of the songs. Little Brother is a rock album made by punk dudes, and opener "Don't Wanna" throws out two quick cymbal hits and it's off, a good representative of what's to come -- all propulsive drumbeats and charging guitars bolstering spirited, somewhat rough vocals that spout lyrics of disillusionment, vulnerability, and, somewhere in all that, hope as well. The band's familiar melodic Cali punk drives this brisk set, and the only song that stands out as markedly different is the title track, which relatively slows things down at the midway mark with shuffling ska upstrokes, a lackadaisical bassline, and background harmonies that culminate in a nice singsongy chorus. Dead to Me's sense of melody and their ability to write basic, catchy songs shines through in all five tracks, and that's what ultimately makes this EP so enjoyable. Little Brother is a natural second step from that first spirited album -- though one that doesn't stray too far from the original blueprint -- and even if it doesn't suggest much innovation in the future, it's hard to find fault. Actually, the only complaint that can really be tossed Dead to Me's way is that they're teasing fans; those who liked 2006's Cuban Ballerina will listen to this EP and then anxiously ask for more. ~ Corey AparAlternative Press (p.132) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Dead To Me have carved out a distinctive sonic quality that allows them to stand out in a crowded genre....The earnestness that oozes from every track is a rare, valuable commodity."

Words such as "goofy" and "geeky" have long been used to describe Weezer's music, but these qualities are only one aspect of the band's sound; beneath all the humorous pop culture references and snarky attitude, Rivers Cuomo touched upon a myriad of serious topics including existential angst, aging, and sexual mores. While at first listen RADITUDE seems to be one of the Weezer's silliest albums (song titles include "The Girl Hot Hot" and "In the Mall"), there is, as usual, more than meets the ear. Even on the paean to debauchery "Can't Stop Partying" (the lyrics of which were written by rapper Jermaine Dupri), there is a certain undercurrent of melancholy, suggesting that the song may be simultaneously a celebration and a cry for help. "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To," for all its teen-pop bounce and smirking descriptions ...

CHRISTMAS ON MARS might be the Flaming Lips' bona fide sci-fi epic, but EMBRYONIC is the musical equivalent of the final scenes of 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY: transformative chaos that results in a new start. From THE SOFT BULLETIN onward, the Lips seemed focused on tidying the loose ends of their earlier work, almost to the point of constraining themselves. Their wilder side is unleashed on Embryonic's 18 tracks, and the band sounds more off-the-cuff than it has in years -- some tracks are barely longer than snippets, ...

Audio Mixer: Jason Lader.
If there was any flaw with Brandi Carlile's second album, THE STORY, it's that it was perhaps a touch too austere, painted in amber tones by producer T Bone Burnett. Its 2009 sequel, GIVE UP THE GHOST, opens up and breathes, perhaps partially due to swapping T Bone for Rick Rubin, who retains the spooky, serious vibe but makes things a little less chilly. This isn't sealed off; there is room for guests here, including such L.A. linchpins as Benmont Tench and Red Hot Chili Pepper Chad Smith, but also Elton John and his arranger, Paul Buckmaster. Tellingly, their presence is felt more than heard, as they never remove the spotlight from Carlile, who remains a singularly powerful singer/songwriter. When the setting is spartan, her voice is haunting and gripping, wrenching out operatic emotions, but GIVE UP THE GHOST trumps THE STORY because Carlile allows herself to lighten up too, to rock again on "Dreams" and jump into ...

Is A Real Boy/Was A Real Boy
Say Anything Is A Real Boy/Was A Real Boy Vinyl LP  (2008)

Little Brother
Vinyl Record $17.55
Modern pop-punk and emo are not usually known for depth but Say Anything bucked conventions with the complex, self-reflexive IS A REAL BOY, a high-minded concept album that tells as much about the band's real leader, Max Bemis, as it does about his fictional surrogate. Bemis's battle with bipolar disorder is dire, but the music he's crafted out of his troubles is colorful and busy, folding confessional lyrics into bright arrangements like the keyboard stabbing of "Wow, I Can Get Sexual Too" and the fuzzy overdrive of "Every Man Has a Molly."
Despite some of the hype surrounding its release, Say Anything's self-described rock opera ...Is a Real Boy still caught many in the punk scene off-guard, seemingly coming out of nowhere with its theatrical tone and critical, perceptive lyrical makeup. At the helm of the album is the self-conscious 20-something singer/songwriter Max Bemis, who ultimately is Say Anything: he wrote and plays pretty much everything but percussion on the record. The songs were originally written as part of a play, complete with a cast of characters, full story, and spoken interludes. A rise-and-fall plot of sorts, the story line was to be: a band is mediocre until its idealistic frontman (who also suffers from alienation and anxiety in a world of hypocrisy) becomes cursed to spew his innermost thoughts in the form of honest songs that alter the band into wildly popular stars before their own hypocrisy leads to their undoing. And though the proposed story line didn't completely transfer to the album, it's almost too easy to see parallels between the real band and the made-up one, envisioning Bemis (with his own history of anxiety, depression, and paranoia) as the actual hyper-aware lead character. Sure, one could look at this album as self-indulgent, overzealous, and egocentric, but when the songs are as catchy, cutting, and enjoyable as these, it really doesn't matter. The compelling rock of "Belt" starts things off with its thuggish army of background singers, leading into the self-conscious, wry realms of "Woe" (choice lyrics include: "she took pity on me, horizontally, but most likely because of my band"). Urgent drumbeats and harmonizing vocals open the singalong "Alive with the Glory of Love," a song that is so catchy, one almost forgets the dark, almost Holocaust-like nature of the lyrics (a sample line reads "when our city...falls to the axis, they'll search the buildings, collect gold fillings, wallets and rings...you'd look finer with each day in hiding"). Musically, the songs are about as full of ...
