| | Bo Diddley Gold CD Bo Diddley Discography of CDs
Released four months after Bo's death -- and roughly a year and a half after Universal's single-disc The Definitive Collection -- the double-disc Gold is a thorough 41-track overview of Diddley's classic Chess recordings, containing all the usual suspects and filling out the margins with some of Bo's bluesier material. This emphasis on blues gives Gold a different spin than Chess UK's 2006 set The Story of Bo Diddley, which was a full 13 tracks longer than this 2008 comp and gave a lot of space to Bo's weirder work, like when he called out Khrushchev, or when he opened up to funkier grooves. Given a choice, The Story is a preferable pick to Gold as it gives a fuller portrait of Bo, but that doesn't mean that Gold is a bad compilation -- far from it, actually, as its 41 tracks are all first-rate, indicating the consistency of Diddley's catalog even if it doesn't quite hint at his range. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Gold Music | List Price | $19.95 (You save $4.86) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Oldies CDs, Rock, Blues | | Label | Geffen | | Orig Year | 2008 | | All Time Sales Rank | 122798 | | CD Universe Part number | 7767048 | | Catalog number | 001178102 | | Discs | 2 | | Release Date | Oct 28, 2008 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Producer | Andy McKaie (Compilation) | | Additional Info | Remastered |

Gold CD music
$21.09 Recorded between 1963 and 1968. Includes liner notes and song annotations by Cub Koda.
With two discs, 52 songs and a 52-page book, this is a wonderful roller coaster ride through the vitally important Yardbirds catalog. Not only did guitarists Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page emerge from their ranks, but the group spearheaded a unique meld of blues and ferocious rock & roll. Formed in the era of British blues bands, the Yardbirds released a series of singles that gave them Top 40 clout. Though this hastened the exit of Clapton, who decried their ...

| | Doobie Brothers Captain & Me CD (1973) (Import) England; Limited Edition; Reissue; Digipak; Mini LP Sleeve; Argentina
Gold album
$10.49 CAPTAIN AND ME found the Doobie Brothers boasting three strong vocalists, two expert guitarists, and a brace of rhythmic drummers, refining a sound that crossed AM pop-rock, soul-tinged R&B, country-folk, jazzy gospel, and strong musicianship. The result burst the band into national prominence. Traces of Moby Grape, whom the group adored, can be heard in their vibrant harmonies and flowing hooklines, but THE CAPTAIN AND ME showed an act of singular purpose.
The effervescent urgency propelling the percolating groover "Long Train Running" and the leaner rock of "China Grove" into the US singles charts is apparent on every selection. In addition to the band's gorgeous layered harmonies and twin guitar arpeggios, THE CAPTAIN ...

Gold CD music

| | Louis Armstrong Christmas And Hits Duos CDs (2008)
Gold music CDs
$22.59 In one sense, this double-disc collection is merely a way to package two well-known albums in a sleeve and sell them again, an inventory clearing, if you will. On the other hand, it's a great opportunity to pick up two excellent collections by Louis Armstrong that you'd more than likely buy separately if you saw them at the right time. It might also be the perfect Christmas gift for the person you want to hip to Satchmo's particular blend of genius and magic. One set needs little explanation, which is The Definitive Collection. Containing 24 cuts, it has virtually every hit and well-known number that Armstrong recorded for Universal-affiliated labels such as Verve. It also includes a pair of fine duets with Ella Fitzgerald ...
| | Caravan Live At The Fairfield Halls, 1974 CD (2002) Reissue
Gold songs
$12.95 Documented during an era in which U.K. performances by Caravan were few and far between, Live at the Fairfield Halls 1974 is a brilliantly remastered and likewise complete presentation of a concert held just prior to their inaugural tour of North America. Although Caravan had been subjected to several key personnel and managerial alterations in the preceding months, once they hit the stage they shed any behind-the-scenes acrimony and were transformed into a stunning synergy of progressive and symphonic rock. This warm-up show took place on September 1, 1974, at Fairfield Hall in Croydon and was initially documented as a possible promotional tool for their upcoming stateside appearances. The tapes remained on deposit, seemingly forgotten, at the Decca studios storage facility in West Hampstead, U.K., until the stunning 19-minute "For Richard" was resurrected for inclusion on ...

| | H2O Faith CD (1984) Bonus Tracks
Gold music CDs
$12.89 An obscure gem of 1980's New Romantic synth pop, FAITH contains H20's signature hit, "Dream to Sleep." Throughout, the album matches the pulsating synthesizer beds of Spandau Ballet and Depeche Mode with the rich, Bryan Ferry-esque baritone vocals of lead singer Ian Donaldson. On "Success" Donaldson channels Bono's dramatic croon while the band gets funky. "It's In You" is a straight up straight up dance floor soul jam in the vein of Duran Duran and the Style Council. With a non-stop party vibe and sharp songwriting, FAITH makes a strong bid for lost classic status.
What once was cutting edge can easily lose its sharpness after the passage of time has aged its skin; similarly, what was already derivative can find its fleeting qualities drift away with each succeeding calendar. The Scottish band H2O were infatuated with Spandau Ballet; one can hear it in the fervent baritone of vocalist Ian Donaldson and in the funky riffs of "Success" and "All That Glitters (Rusts in Time)" from H2O's 1984 debut LP, Faith. The music on Faith has not dated well. The cheesy synths in "Leonard" and "Action" can even make the most devoted '80s aficionados question their enduring obsession. H2O tried to write catchy new wave pop songs, and they struck the bull's-eye with "Dream to Sleep," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and "It's in You." "Dream to Sleep" drifts on a cloud of immaculate keyboards, while "Who'll Stop the Rain" has a memorably hummable chorus and scrappy guitars. There is fire in Donaldson's voice, but unfortunately there isn't much discipline. Donaldson reaches for high notes too often in the absence of genuine lyrical hooks. Combining the booming voice of Paul Simpson of the Care and the Wild Swans with the romantic croon of Spandau ...
