The Holy Myrrhbearers Womens Choir was formed in 1998 at the Russian Orthodox Church of the Holy Virgin Protection in Nyack, New York, in response to an idea for women to sing and participate in the annual services of the Holy Myrrh-bearing Women. These were the female apostles who followed and served Christ during His earthly ministry, and who were the first to witness His Resurrection from the dead. The choir was created for and by Russian Orthodox women who share a deep feeling for Slavonic liturgical music, and who are already singing Divine Services whenever possible, but whose personal and professional lives do not always allow as much time as they would like to devote to this type of singing. Since its founding, the group continues to sing on every feast day of the Holy Myrrhbearers, which is celebrated every year on the second Sunday following Holy Pascha (Easter), and on other feast days.Within the past seven years, the choir has grown in size from ten to thirty singers of all ages.
