| | Stan Getz Captain Marvel Vinyl LP Record - Import Stan Getz Discography of CDs
One of the more remarkable aspects of Stan Getz's 1972 masterpiece is just how organic he was able to keep the sound. The band surrounding Getz on this Columbia date was led by Chick Corea with his Return to Forever (electric) bassist Stanley Clarke, dru Stan Getz Captain Marvel Songs | 1. | La Fiesta | $0.99 | |

Purchase Captain Marvel CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Houston Person Mellow CD (2009)
Captain Marvel album
$13.59 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato-driven. The quite capable pianist John Di Martino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo rings out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. In a program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet of true professionals to render themes that are harder to play slow than fast. The slower material includes the regretful, throaty ballad "Too Late Now," the totally restrained "To Each His Own," a poignant "Two Different Worlds," and the deep, mature take of "God Bless the Child." Ever cognizant of blue moods, Person is masterful in expressing his innermost heartfelt feelings, as on the easy swinger and obvious choice for this date, Duke Ellington's "In a Mellow Tone." Then there's "Blues in the A.M.," a basic jam with Ray Drummond's bass leading out with drummer Lewis Nash in an uptown style as Chirillo's guitar states its wise, sophisticated case. ...
| | Miles Davis Tribute To Jack Johnson CD (1970) Remastered
Captain Marvel CD music
$7.59 A TRIBUTE TO JACK JOHNSON was originally conceived as the soundtrack for a documentary on the life of the first African American heavyweight boxing champion, but the album stands on its own as one of the most brilliant, compelling fusion recordings ever made. This is due in large part to the increasing influence of rock and funk on Miles's aesthetic, to the superb musicians (including Davis himself-- who turns in some stunningly vigorous solos), and in part to the production skills of Teo Macero, who collaged the album together from numerous jam sessions into two lengthy, majestic tracks.
The infectious boogaloo groove of "Right Off" has John McLaughlin's crunching, wah-wah-driven power chords dancing fervently around the relentless ...
| | Diana Krall Quiet Nights CD (2009)
Captain Marvel music CDs
$13.35 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") and the title track (originally "Corcovado"), both penned by the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim. QUIET NIGHTS isn't solely a Brazilian-themed outing, however, as Krall also spends plenty of time in the comfortable realm of the Great American Songbook, offering up elegant orchestral renditions of "I've Grown Accustomed to His Face" and the Bacharach/David gem "Walk On By" that benefit from her supremely smoky vocals and graceful delivery.

| | Herb Alpert Whipped Cream & Other Delights CD (1965) Bonus Tracks
Captain Marvel CD music
$9.59 How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. With its unlikely combination of Alpert's cool Chet Baker-like trumpet and the blocky cadences of a marching band, the Tijuana Brass produced a lively, colorful mix that managed to appeal to hips and squares alike.
WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS was Herb Albert's most successful album, helped--no doubt--by its highly provocative cover art. The tunes are mostly unknown originals ...

| | Hal Ketchum Father Time Vinyl LP (2008) Bonus CD
Captain Marvel music CDs
$24.25 It has been five years since country songwriter Hal Ketchum released a new album in the United States. 2007 saw the issue of the excellent One More Midnight in the United Kingdom; there were plans for release in the U.S. in April of 2007 (three months later than in the United Kingdom) but they were scuttled in favor of Curb's typically erratic marketing strategies -- they shuffled out a makeshift best-of instead. Seek out the import: it's worth it. Ketchum left the American scene in fine form with 2003's The King of Love, and he returns even better here. There are 14 tracks that run the gamut from his trademark soulful and insightful ballads to some scorching acoustic bluesy funk tunes like "Millionaire's Wife," (a rocking murder ballad with killer backing vocals by Angela Primm and Gale Mays that make it reminiscent of Delaney & Bonnie). There's a great cover of Tom Waits' "Jersey Girl" included as well. Ketchum's version of the tune turns it inside out and makes it a country honky tonk ballad with pedal steel whining throughout that lends itself to being played in the local barroom. And Ketchum can sing about New Jersey all he wants -- he's a native New Yorker and his wife Gina is from New Jersey. The tango-tinged "Million Dollar Baby" showcases congas, a Hammond B-3, and a dobro, and Ketchum slides into the deep mambo rhythm like he was made for it. (Ironically, he was thinking of Django Reinhardt when he was writing it, but it's got far more tango than gypsy jazz in it). "Continental Farewell" is an ironic tune that begins as a country waltz ...
