Frank Capra's 1938 adaptation of the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play is a time-honored comic sensation.

Tony (James Stewart), the eldest son of millionaire Anthony P. Kirby, has fallen in love with Alice Vanderhof. She's a sweet working girl who lives with her eccentric family and a few extra misfits in a decaying old house. It's a building that just happens to stand in the way of Mr. Kirby's plans to construct an impressive office complex. But when Grandpa Vanderhof refuses to sell, it's a clash of the cantankerous titans. Unfortunately, the fallout may send lovebirds Tony and Alice flying in different directions. YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU is a Capra-fied adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, and it earned a number of Oscar nominations and wins, including the Best Picture statuette.

Additional cast includes: Lillian Yarbo, Clarence Wilson and Josef Swickard.

4 stars An example of quality, wit and charm on film.
An example of quality, wit and charm not seen in recent movies. This is an old [1938] black and white movie adaptation of a great Broadway play. This movie was directed by Frank Capra from a adaptation of the George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart play that won a Pulitzer Prize. The movie won Oscars for Best Director and Best Picture in 1938. For today’s audience it is a great example of how comedy can be developed with wit and charm. By contemporary standards there is a paucity of vulgar language, nudity and adult sexual situations. However this is a movie that makes you feel good after seeing it. Even the minor characters in the movie are outstanding.

This World War II comedy stars Cary Grant in an uncharacteristic turn as Walter Eckland. Walter is an unshaven bum who inhabits a deserted island in the South Seas. Completely boozed up, unshaven, and badly dressed, Walter is a watcher for Japanese spy planes. An Australian Navy Commander, Frank Houghton (Trevor Howard) has pressed Walter, who once had his own cruiser at the beginning of the war, to become the sole occupant of a strategic watching station. It is into this world that smart and sexy Catherine Frenau (Leslie Caron) is drawn when Walter, en route in a dinghy to rescue another watcher, stumbles on to the schoolteacher and a flock of seven young girls. The girls have been marooned because their ...

From his casual charm to his cleft chin, George Clooney has frequently drawn comparisons to an actor of another age: Cary Grant. With his third directorial effort, the Oscar winner pays homage to the style of films that helped make Grant famous, such as BRINGING UP BABY and HIS GIRL FRIDAY. In 1925, when LEATHERHEADS takes place, professional football is a joke, especially when compared to its more respected college cousin. Teams across the country are folding, and player Dodge Connelly (Clooney) will do anything to keep his own team, the Duluth Bulldogs, from folding. The enterprising (read: scheming) Dodge steals Princeton star and war hero Carter Ruthford (John Krasinski, THE OFFICE) from his school, and soon the Bulldogs are winning, but it's the game of football that is the real champion as fans pack the stadiums. Meanwhile, reporter Lexie Littleton (Renée Zellweger) begins investigating Rutherford's past, thanks to a tip from one of the star's old war buddies that he may not be all he seems. The pre-regulation football is dirty, but it's far cleaner than the action when Dodge and Carter vie for Lexie's affections. From the classic Universal logo that opens the film, Clooney firmly sets his film in the sepia-toned past. His lightning-fast dialogue is certainly reminiscent of the repartee between Grant and costars such as Katharine Hepburn and Rosalind Russell. But as much as he owes to the screwball comedies of the 1930s and '40s, he also is mining the same vein that his frequent collaborators, the Coen Brothers, ...

A group of Martian invaders discovers that mankind may not need to be wiped out after all when they touch down on planet Earth just in time for Christmas. Far in the deepest reaches of the cosmos, a device made by Earthlings scours the solar system for new forms of life. When a race of highly advanced aliens discovers the device and assumes that an invasion is imminent, they decide to launch a preemptive counter attack. But there's a stowaway on their Earthbound ship, and he's a curious eight-year-old Martian named Kip. The son of the ship's commander, Kip only wanted to spend a little more time with his dad and never meant to jeopardize the mission. When Kip accidentally activates an escape pod than sends him plummeting down to Earth, his dad quickly follows for fear that his son will be stuck on the surface when the planet is vaporized. But Kip and ...
