(3 Customer Reviews)
The title of this 2008 release, and the cover art--a b&w photo featuring Seal in a suit and tie crooning into a microphone--should give listeners a fair idea of the album's nature. A glance at the track list, which includes soul classics by Sam Cooke, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, and Otis Redding, confirms the supposition. Seal has been settling more comfortably into his role as an adult contemporary singer, and SOUL, on which the British vocalist interprets 12 American R&B gems in elegant fashion, finds him fully inhabiting the niche once and for all..
Seal may yet join the mainstream ranks of Rod Stewart and Michael Buble with his sophisticated covers and accessible sound, but his singing on SOUL is still full of the passion and intensity that characterize his earlier material. His take on Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" is a case in point, as is his heartfelt reading of Mayfield's "People Get Ready." Veteran producer David Foster gives the album a sleek yet natural feel, further heightening the compelling nature of Seal's performances.

Entertainment Weekly (p.72) - "As always, Seal sounds great; age has relaxed his singing, and that lends the material an appropriately lived-in vibe." -- Grade: B- Soul Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) OK THIS IS ONE AMAZING RECORDING Normally I completely hate an album loaded with cover versions, HOWEVER...Seal has paid a very honorable - touching tribute to these gems...I will now rush out and buy the rest of his recordings...almost ashamed it took me this long to discover this great artist. His interpretation of Sam Cooke's 'A Change is gonna come' is more than worth the price of admission... Submitted by faust8577 (Lorraine, Que. Canada) Was This Review Helpful? WOW Heard this CD at a friend's house this past weekend. Had to go out and buy it right away. It is wonderful. Seal has put his own style on these "Old School" tunes. Definitely a keeper. Submitted by Sandy (Orangeburg, SC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
More shrimp than seal My only Seal album was "Best 1991 - 2004" which I greatly enjoy. Based on the quality of this album I bought Soul. Seal performs the selected songs in a competent fashion. His musicians stay true to the originals. I just can't find any passion in the album, and I really don't believe any of the tracks sound as good or better than the originals. It's OK, but not great. Purchase Soul CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Stevie Wonder Time To Love CD (2005)
Soul
$13.69 On his first studio album since 1995's CONVERSATION PIECE, R&B legend Stevie Wonder revisits familiar ground from earlier eras in his career while keeping with contemporary pop sounds. Although certain tracks conjure up the vibe of early Wonder outings (the funky "Please ...
| | Amy Winehouse Back To Black CD (2006)
Soul
$12.49 BACK TO BLACK's production is an artful blend of sophisticated '60s R&B and 21st-century stylistic poaching, with "Tears Dry on Their Own" incorporating elements of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," and Winehouse sounding like Billie Holiday fronting a reggae band on the old-fashioned cheating song "Just Friends." Densely packed with musical history and often conjuring a dark, Portishead-esque atmosphere, BACK TO BLACK is a sumptuous-sounding collection freighted with blunt confessionals of a lush life.
It doesn't take much listening to Amy Winehouse's 1960s pop period piece to realize that this is a tribute with an edge--nice girls back then didn't ...

| | Alicia Keys As I Am CD (2007)
Soul
$13.65 The third full-length from contemporary R&B diva Alicia Keys is called AS I AM, a title that adequately reflects the album's straightforward, confessional soul-pop. Keys built her popularity making stylish, reflective, voice-&-piano music; AS I AM continues that trend, albeit in a poppier vein that balances neatly between neo-soul and adult contemporary. This is reflected in the mid-tempo grooves, songs of empowerment ("Superwoman"), and stirring ballads ("The Thing About Love").
Keys's collaborators on the album include songwriter Linda Perry, who co-wrote three of the album's tracks, and John Mayer, who twines voices with Keys on the sensual "Lesson Learned." Top-notch arrangements, which include gorgeous, retro-tinged flourishes via strings and horns, make the set shimmer, but it's the strength of the hook-heavy tunes and Keys's moving performances ...

| | John Legend Evolver CD (2008)
Soul
$11.75 The third full-length from John Legend finds the neo-soul singer-songwriter mixing it up a bit. Whereas its predecessor, the excellent ONCE AGAIN, stayed the course of smooth yet passionate retro-themed R&B, EVOLVER experiments with different sounds and styles. The lead single, "Green Light," with its amped-up programmed beat, synths, and cameo from Andre 3000, sounds more like a 21st-century club jam than an old-school throwback. Reggae, ballads, adult contemporary, and digitized contemporary R&B all make their way into the album's diverse musical stew. Whether it's the mellow, low-key funk of "It's Over," the synth-pop of "Satisfaction" (one can imagine the song being performed by Depeche Mode), or the guest spots from Brandy, Estelle, ...

| | KP Devlin Spirit Of The Mule CD (2000)
Soul
$12.69 From the impassioned opening lines of "Everything" to the final rueful strains of "When Your Angels Wore Different Wings," K.P. Devlin's Spirit of the Mule offers up songs full of wonderful wordplay and allusion to the highs and lows of life near the end of the twentieth century. His lyrics often seem simple and straightforward enough, but subsequent listenings reveal subtlety and depth.Folk RockK.P. Devlin writes songs. He then sings them. His music is at times intense, passionate and cynical, sometimes hilarious, occasionally dark and almost vicious, and quite often, a mixture of all of the above. Musically, he has tapped into many familiar genres (rock, folk, Celtic, blues and country), and his songs often have a "familiar" quality to them (as though you've heard them before, even though you know you haven't), and yet there is something refreshing about them as well.It is believed that K.P. Devlin was born in a large city somewhere in the United States. However, some folks claim he is originally from Newfoundland, and still others are of the notion that he was raised by shepherds in a small village in Albania. He has spent significant amounts of time in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Atlanta, Austin and New York City (which he has called home for quite some time). He was reportedly seen entering the borough of Manhattan last week, riding upon a gray mule. Perched atop the mule (whose name turns out to be Tigerlily), plodding along the walkway atop the Brooklyn Bridge, Devlin strummed his guitar. ...

$16.45 Michael Cedric Williams Jr. was born on July 8, 1983 in Sacred Hospital. At the age of 11 Michael aka DaVinci began playing the drums with his father at a local community church in Pensacola, Florida. While playing drums with his father in Pensacola, Michael Jr. became inspired to sing as he would listen to artists such as Fred Hammond, John P. Kee, Commissioned and so on. Growing up in a Christian environment wanting to sing, Michael Jr. and his younger sister Tamara Williams would sing back-up for their father and sing in many local choirs in Pensacola, Florida. Around the age of 17 Michael Jr. and his brother Nathaniel share an equal interest in music. Recording onto a tape recorder singing and playing along to the rhythm that Nathaniel would create led Michael to grow in his delivery of vocals and later record in a professional studio becoming a member of the World Wide Collaborators. After the death of his mother Debbie Ann Williams The World Wide Collaborators were chosen by the New York International Music and Film Festival Talent search to audition in Las Vegas, Michael was the only member at that time that could travel such a far distance. Speaking with different independent labels Michael was able to collaborate with the hip-hop duo 22 block.com which would later hold a performance in New York ...

| | The Music of Luther Vandross CDs (2009) Box Set
Soul
$24.99 If the two-disc ESSENTIAL LUTHER VANDROSS isn't enough and the four-disc LOVE, LUTHER is too much, Epic/J/Legacy has the remedy (sort of) in the form of this three-disc box. Packaged like a DVD set, THE MUSIC OF LUTHER VANDROSS contains 45 songs and, for whatever reason, includes the live versions of "Stop to Love" and Change's "The Glow of Love"--two of Vandross' best-known songs, which most casual fans would prefer to have in original studio form. (Yet the compilers chose to include both studio and live versions of "Creepin'.") Many of Vandross' notable hits are featured--such as "Never Too Much," "Any Love," "Here and Now," "Give Me the Reason," and "Power of Love/Love Power"--but several major cuts are missing, including the Top 10 R&B singles "There's Nothing Better Than Love," "She Won't Talk to Me," and "Sometimes It's Only Love." While the box is crammed with quality material, there's no getting around the fact that it is less than ideal, no matter your level of Luther fandom.
