To say that Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT is the best comic book adaptation does the film a bit of a disservice. It may be a Batman film, but this isn't a kid-friendly action movie full of the bams and pows of the original series. This is a pitch-black thriller with enough drama and tragedy to please even William Shakespeare, but it will certainly keep both comics fans and uninitiated audiences equally happy. THE DARK KNIGHT starts in the wake of BATMAN BEGINS: with the appearance of Batman (Christian Bale), Gotham City's criminal underworld is unnerved. They're also plagued by the new D.A., Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), who, in his quest for justice, remains above the city's corruption. Enter a new villain, the Joker (Heath Ledger), who wants to unite the criminals for a common purpose: to kill Batman. THE DARK KNIGHT is one of the most hyped movies to date, and a lesser film would be crushed under the weight of all that expectation. Some of the publicity stems from the early death of Ledger, who turns in an excellent performance. He provides moments of humor, but this Joker is terrifying, sharing more with classic villains such as Hannibal Lechter than with his comic book predecessors. Eckhart is equally good as Dent, and Maggie Gyllenhaal deserves praise for taking over the role of Rachel Dawes from Katie Holmes. Though there's more emphasis on plot and character development than in most comic book adaptations, that doesn't mean Nolan has skimped on any of the action sequences. Each set piece is done perfectly, leaving the audience breathless. THE DARK KNIGHT is filmmaking at its best; its subject matter may be dark and depressing, but it's tough not to feel exhilarated by its artistry when the credits begin to roll.

Dark Knight Reviews:

"[T]he movie exudes a predatory glamour that makes the comic-book films that have come before it look all the more like kid stuff." -- Grade: A--- Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

5 stars out of 5 -- "[A]n anarchic, malevolent fury of a movie....Ledger's Joker is pure, powerful, immense..."-- Empire Staff, Empire

"[A] sleek detective story....Bale and Eckhart centralize the movie's thematic concerns, causing the Joker's outrageousness to stand out."-- Eric Kohn, Premiere

"This last development is a fine example of Nolan's flair for multivalent plot points....Nolan is aided by strong performances. Bale is focused, intense and committed to being terrifying..."-- Kim Newman, Sight and Sound

"Working from Michael Mann's visual template and seemingly indebted to the hard-nosed savagery of THE DEPARTED, Christopher Nolan's second BATMAN installment has some thrilling moments..."-- Kent Jones, Film Comment

"The best of all the Batmans, Christopher Nolan's haunted film leaps beyond its origins and becomes an engrossing tragedy."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Ranked #3 in Rolling Stone's 'Movies Of The Year' -- "[A] Batman movie that offers enough moral relativism to give you knightmares."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone

Included in Entertainment Weekly's 2008 Films Of The Year -- "[A] triumph of comic-book relevance, starring Christian Bale as a superhero uneasy with his calling in a city anesthetized to matter-of-fact evil..."-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

4 stars out of 4 -- "THE DARK KNIGHT is a more thrilling, intelligent, morally complex and masterfully crafted film than any summer blockbuster in recent years. It's probably the best superhero movie to date."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today

"Always a consummate professional, Ledger threw himself into a role he clearly relished, giving a transfixing performance..."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

"Pitched at the divide between art and industry, poetry and entertainment, it goes darker and deeper than any Hollywood movie of its comic-book kind..."-- Manohla Dargis, New York Times

5 stars After Dark Presents
The Dark Knight Is My all time favorite superhero movie. Great Beginning, Middle, and End. Heath Ledger did do a good job as the Joker, thou not quite as funny as the Joker is suppose to be, and he did over act the part but his last performance was excellent and it defenitaly lived up to the Hype. christian Bale as batman did a good job, he could have come up with a better voice part as batman, BATMAN DOESN'T Rasp His Voice. And what is up with that batmobile? Is it a tank? The batmobile in the original Batman played by Michael Keaton was way better, but the additional Motorcycle is cool. This movie had a great ending and Christipher Nolan did a Perfect job Directing and It should definatley get an Oscar for best movie of the year. One of the Best Dragged out movie ever. 5 stars

5 stars New Batman is dark and awsome
The joker is so cool! Layers of plot and a darkness suitable for mature audiences. Much better than that first run of Batmans (save maybe the original)

4 stars Excellent sequel
Continuing on with the dark sombre mood set by Batman Begins. Brilliant cast: special mention Heath(nuff said). Glad the people in charge resisted going all out with extra gadgets and effects and kept it character driven.

5 stars GREAT MOVIE, BUT.........
EVEN THOUGH HEATH DID AS GOOD OR EVEN A LITTLE BETTER TO ME THAN NICHOLSON AS JOKER HE SIMPLY DIDN'T MAKE THIS MOVIE. JUST SIMPLY TOO MUCH HYPE PLACED ON HIM SOLEY BECAUSE OF HIS PREMATURE AND TRAGIC DEATH. THIS MOVIE WAS SO GREAT BECAUSE OF ALL THE GREAT CHARACTERS IN THIS MOVIE AND SOME OF THE COOLEST WRITING EVER FOR A SUPERHERO MOVIE LIKE THIS THAT BROUGHT IT ALL TOGETHER IN AN EVEN BETTER ENDING. HEATH LEDGER WAS GOOD AS JOKER BUT I THINK HIS PERFORMANCE WAS A JUST A BIT OVER RATED HERE. THOUGH WHAT HAPPENED TO HEATH WAS A TRADGEDY I THINK A LOT OF HYPE SIMPLY COMES FROM THAT BASE OF FOLKS THAT WANTED HIM RECOGNIZED FOR THAT ANOTHER SUPER HYPED LITTLE MOVIE CALLED "BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN". I PERSONALY HOPE HE GETS HONORABLE MENTION AT THE OSCARS FOR HIS WORK BUT NOT AN OSCAR BY THE SAME WAY JULIA ROBERTS DID FOR "ERIN BROCKAVICH" IN THIS WAY. I HOPE THAT IN THE NEXT BATMAN MOVIE THEY GET WHO I THINK WOULD A BE AN EVEN BETTER JOKER AND THAT IS DANIEL DAY LEWIS. THIS GUY CAN PLAY "DARK AND SCARY" AS GOOD OR BETTER THAN HEATH ANY DAY OF THE WEEK AND I HOPE HE GETS TO PROVE IT IN THE NEXT BATMAN MOVIE. I ALSO AGREE WITH OTHER REVIEWERS ON HERE THAT BATMANS VOICE NEEDS A LITTLE WORK NEXT TIME AND TO BE A LITTLE CLEARER INSTEAD LOW AND RASPY. OVER ALL THOUGH SIMPLY GREAT WRITING AND ACTION AND WELL WORTH BUYING. THIS IS A MUST BUY AND A MUST SEE AND CERTAINLY SHOULD BE UP FOR AN OSCAR AS ONE OF THE BEST MOVIES OF THE YEAR.

Co-helmed by WALL-E director Andrew Stanton, FINDING NEMO follows Marlin (voiced by Albert Brooks), an overprotective clown fish father, as he desperately searches the farthest reaches of the sea for his missing son Nemo. Marlin's journey leads him beyond the Great Barrier Reef into deeper and darker waters, where he meets Dory (Ellen DeGeneres), a forgetful yet optimistic blue tang, and a number of not-so-friendly--and often very hungry--aquatic creatures. Meanwhile, little Nemo finds himself in a dentist's fish tank in Syndey, Australia, along with other underwater captives, including Gill (Willem Dafoe), the group's scarred Moorish idol leader. As Nemo works with his new friends on a plan to escape their tank, Marlin and Dory swim closer, but they'll need more than just fins to get into the dentist's office. This fifth computer-animated outing by Pixar continues the company's remarkable winning streak that began with TOY STORY. Like other Pixar films, FINDING NEMO features a story with heart--this time, a father-and-son tale--and thoroughly charming leads--in this case, Marlin, Nemo, and Dory. And, of course, there's an army of fascinating supporting characters, including Bruce (Barry Humphries), a great white shark on a no-fish diet; Crush ...

The Marvel comics hero returns for more high-flying fun in this third installment in the series. Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) is up to his usual Spidey tricks, attending university classes as an awkward geek, then quickly slipping into his red-and-blue suit to save New York City from various villains. And there are villains aplenty. Thomas Hayden Church blows in as the Sandman, an escaped convict whose molecular structure is destroyed in a particle accelerator. The freak accident gives him the ability to form and reform from piles of dust. While the Sandman sifts through the city streets robbing banks, Spidey must also contend with his onetime friend, Harry (James Franco), who has taken up where his father, the Green Goblin, left off. Harry chases Spider-Man down on his goblin glider, hurling pumpkin bombs. But Spider-Man's biggest battle is perhaps within himself, when he is taken over by meteorite ooze--a substance that gives him great power, but also turns him into a vengeful, selfish jerk. Throw into the mix Peter's new competition at the Daily Bugle--the ambitious, sneaky Eddie Brock (Topher Grace)--and Peter's relationship troubles with Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst), and SPIDER-MAN 3 weaves a tangled web indeed. Director Sam Raimi's playful style ...

Based on the Hasbro toy line that initially captivated kids in the 1980s, director Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS finds two warring bands of shape-shifting alien robots renewing their intergalactic conflict on Earth. While the Decepticons, followers of the malevolent Megatron (voiced by Hugo Weaving), strive to take over the planet, the Autobots, led by the valiant Optimus Prime (voiced by Peter Cullen), are intent on protecting humanity. When young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) discovers that his new car is really the Autobot Bumblebee (voiced by Mark Ryan), it sets the stage for a massive giant-robot showdown. A shining example of the Hollywood summer blockbuster at its best, TRANSFORMERS combines stunning CGI effects and thrilling action sequences with drama, humor, and a touch of romance. Featuring a large cast that includes Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Jon Voight, John Turturro, Anthony Anderson, and Rachael Taylor, the film is anchored by LaBeouf, who always displays an engaging Everyman charm, whether he's running from colossal ...

For both comic book fans and those who can't tell the Green Lantern from the Green Arrow, IRON MAN is the type of summer blockbuster whose appeal lasts far beyond the season. Robert Downey Jr. stars as Tony Stark, a billionaire playboy and genius who puts as much effort into chasing skirts as he puts into chasing his next big idea. A trip to Afghanistan to sell weapons quickly devolves into chaos, and Stark finds himself at the mercy of a warlord who wants him to build a missile. Instead, Stark creates a powerful suit of armor, turning him into Iron Man and allowing him to escape. When he returns to America, his assistant Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow), friend Rhodey (Terrence Howard), and right-hand man Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) all marvel at the change in the man they knew. IRON MAN is the first film to be self-financed by Marvel Studios, and they should be proud of their freshman effort. They didn't take any obvious routes with choosing the cast or crew, and it pays off. Director Jon Favreau, who also has a small role in the film, is best known for directing ELF, but his first action-driven effort is nearly flawless. Casting Downey was gutsy but inspired: this is his first big action picture as well, but the wit he displays in films such ...

Loosely based on the comic book miniseries of the same by Mark Millar and J.G. Pursued by rogue agent Cross (Thomas Kretschmann), Wesley is trained by the sleek, sexy Fox (Angelina Jolie) and the charismatic Sloan (Morgan Freeman), among others, to be just as proficient and deadly as his father. Once Wesley becomes a master assassin, he must confront Cross, and contend with the stunning ramifications of that encounter. Straying rather far from the ...

When the box office champ Ben Stiller's comedic performances aren't a variation on a soft-spoken, put-upon everyman with an eventual fuse, he's usually playing a full-blown absurdist monster with an apoplectic Napoleon complex. These bizarre creations usually adorn films in which the funnyman provides the supporting work (DODGEBALL, HEAVYWEIGHTS), but, whenever he's directing, he's free to build an entire filmic universe around his asinine, ludicrously funny, culture-skewering characters and premises. His ZOOLANDER (2001) bit at the entertainment industry with silly abandon, but Stiller has firmly set TROPIC THUNDER within the realm of sophisticated Hollywood satire. In it, a desperate director named Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) trying to make a Vietnam war movie drops his pampered actors into the heart of the jungle. Cockburn's stars include Stiller as an action hero who's starting to make bad career choices, Jack Black as an insecure low-brow comedy star going through heroin withdrawals, and ...
