| | Europe Almost Unplugged CD Europe Discography of CDs
One thing about most hair metal bands of the '80s -- they were not necessarily known to be "proficient" at their respective instruments. But one such group from the genre that certainly had the chops to back up their pretty boy looks was Europe, which prove this theory once again on their 2008 live CD, Almost Unplugged (which was issued as a DVD a year later). Recorded at a venue in Stockholm (called Nalen) on January 26, 2008, Almost Unplugged sees the group joined by a string quartet as they balance originals with a few classic rock nuggets, including Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here," Thin Lizzy's "Suicide," and UFO's "Love to Love," among others, as well as a still-bombastic rendition of "The Final Countdown." Surprisingly, there is no rendition of their power ballad, "Carrie," included here, which you'd think would have fit in well with all the other stripped-down tunes here -- especially when overbearing cheese such as the song "Hero" is included (although admittedly, the song's meaning is heartfelt -- it's a tribute to the late, great Phil Lynott). The histrionics may be toned down a tad here, but Almost Unplugged serves as further proof that Europe remain arena rock kings throughout...Europe. ~ Greg Prato

| | Lita Ford Wicked Wonderland CD (2009) Bonus Tracks
Almost Unplugged
$14.19 Though former Runaways guitarist Lita Ford has been absent from the recording industry since 1997, she hasn't exactly been idle. After releasing Kiss Me Deadly, her final album after a string of them in the '80s and '90s, the music scene -- and the industry with it -- changed, and alternative ruled the airwaves. Ford got married to Jim Gillette, former vocalist with hair metal rockers Nitro, and started a family. In addition, she relocated to the Caribbean. Wicked Wonderland is uncharacteristic of the pop-metal she released a decade ago. It's an in-your-face metal record, but ultimately it's a very studied and calculated 21st century pop-metal record. It's an album with explicit sexual content, examining S&M, bondage, power exchanges, and all manner of kink and crave in lyrics, words, and sleeve images. Ford wrote all of these songs with her co-producers Greg Hampton and Gillette. Gillette is also either a duet partner or backing vocalist on every track here. Hampton handles bass, keyboard, and other sonic duties, and there are a pair of drummers who alternate in Chris Collier and Stet Howland. The album's first single (and longest ...

| | Ted Nugent CD (1975) Remastered
Almost Unplugged
$6.75 Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Ted Nugent's self-titled 1975 debut solo release is a bold expression of gonzo guitarist's sound, image, and abundant attitude. Ted had what was essentially a touring band with Amboy Dukes bassist Rob Grange, fellow Michiganite Derek St. Holmes on vocals and guitar, and Cliff Davies on drums. During days off from the mega-road trip that preceded this album, the group recorded its first record. Co-produced by famed hard-rock/metal helmsman Tom Werman, "Stranglehold" has the impromptu jamming feel of a live show.
Like "Deuce" for Kiss, the first track of a first album can define an act. "Stranglehold" leads straight into the no-holds-barred "Stormtroopin'," where the riffs are non-stop. The boogieish "Hey Baby" shows why St. Holmes was an underrated, soulful hard-rock vocalist. He howls "got me an overdose of rock & roll" on "Just What the Doctor Ordered." A wicked metal lick introduces "Snakeskin Cowboys." ...
| | DJ Faust Inward Journeys CD (1999)
Almost Unplugged
$16.45 Faust's second album in just over a year is yet another trip through the mind (and turntables) of one of the best DJs out there. It's just as dense as Man or Myth? but takes Faust's beatboxing skills even farther along. There's a certain amount of been-there-done-that to the proceedings, but Faust's deft turntable skills rescues any case of the musical blah's. ~ Keith Farley
“In Faust’s hands, turntablism is as breakneck virtuosic as bebop, as bereft of melody asmodern classical– but way to committed to putting the boogie in your butt for the curatorialstaff to start sniffin’ around.”SPIN MAGAZINE“Faust, able to adapt turntables as a musical instrument, creates a dimension of sound andimagination that teleports the listener into a surreal world of music.”MUZIK MAGAZINE“Faust puts old-school hip-hop through a Technics blender for an accelerated history lesson that’s too damn funky for your room.”ALTERNATIVE PRESS“Faust’s scratches, juggles, and even skipping records coalesce into one giant itchy symphonywithmovement after movement of next-level skills taking the listener on an aural voyage throughFaust’s ill psyche.”VICE MAGAZINE“Along with the arrival of the new millennium comes the advancement of music and how theworld creates it. A world reigned by DJ Faust.”iMUSIC FAUST'S BIO: Much like his mythological philosopher-magician namesake, DJ Faust is ahead of the learningcurve. In 1998, Faust made history with the release of the first full-length, all-scratching album inhistory, the critically lauded Man Or Myth. This was followed by a joint EP release alongsideShortee & Craze entitled The Fathomless EP, the first musical release containing Drum & Basstracks comprised solely of scratching. In 1999, Faust released his second full- length Inward Journeys, showcasing his original beatmaking skills even more while still incorporating the turntablist trickery he was known for. He hassince released multiple joint albums with DJ Shortee (Digital Soul & Satisfaction Guaranteed),singles, remixes, countless mix cds & appeared on numerous compilations ("Urban Revolutions","Return of the DJ 3", "Revenge of the B-Boy", Ubisoft’s "XIII Soundtrack", "Scratch MovieSoundtrack", "Tino Breaks Vol 1 & 2", "Bomb Anniversary Collection 1991-2001", "DeepConcentration 3", "Contents Under Pressure", etc…Most recently Faust's "Sudden Deeath" trackappeared on EA Sport's "All Pro" soundtrack. Also, Faust & Shortee broke into the Drum & Bassscene producing under the aliad name URBAN ASSAULT with their ultrafunky dance floor tune "Away", with big follow up releases in 2008 on UK'sEasy Records "Jungle Story" album. Most recently their alias Urban Assault productions include "Do You Believe" remix, a 12" single on Restless ...
