To say that the Hanson Brothers are still happily continuing their overt Ramones worship on their first live album is an understatement -- there's a reason why the title is a riff on that earlier band's classic effort It's Alive, and why the most directly heartfelt moment on the album is the tribute to the late Joey Ramone, "Joey Had to Go." Pulling together a slew of songs from their various efforts from a show in Alberta, interspersed with snippets of an interview with Tommy Hanson, whose persistent non-answers are somehow more coherent than most bands' straightforward ones, the quartet charges on ahead with little change from the studio versions of the songs, and for good reason -- why mess around with a good thing? Knowing that it's Nomeansno underneath all the punk/hockey drag is part of the joy; hearing them bust out great harmonies on "Everything I Wanted" and "Stick Boy" or the aggressive-as-hell treble guitar attack starting "Four Heads One Brain" is a delight. Of course, there are also the shouted "one-two-three-four!" countdowns from Tommy throughout, while the concluding track -- "Shut Up Tommy" -- consists of various snippets of the band shouting down various attempts by the hapless guitarist to philosophize on matters, if that's the correct term, while on-stage. A further bonus on the DVD side of the disc is an entertaining treat: All-Grain Brewing with Johnny Hanson, originally released on videotape back in 2002. Featuring the band's glasses-wearing lead singer as indicated, along with brother Davey, it's at once a great performance in character and a perfectly straightforward explanation of how to make one's own beer at home, with practical tips, detailed explanations of equipment and procedures, and a general air of good times. Snippets from various Hanson Brothers performances crop up throughout the tape, as well as moments showing the band at a brewery helping things along. ~ Ned RaggettKerrang (Magazine) (p.48) - "[A] big bag of infectious pop-punk fun." Liner Note Authors: Martyn Hanson; Bruce Pilato. Recording information: Indiana (01/24/1978). Arrangers: Greg Lake; Keith Emerson; Carl Palmer. Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group. Originally, the trio's members, tired of sublimating their musical identities within the context of ELP, each intended to do a solo album of his own. Reason prevailed, however, probably aided by the group's awareness that the combined sales of the solo albums issued by the five members of Yes the previous year were a fraction of the sales of Yes' most recent records. The result was this double LP; essentially three solo sides and one group side, it is the most complex and demanding of the group's albums. Keith Emerson's "Piano Concerto" is on the level of a good music-student piece, without much original language. Where Emerson, in conjunction with his conductor and co-orchestrator, John Mayer, succeeds admirably is in writing beautiful virtuoso passages for the piano. Greg Lake's romantic songs mark the final flowering of his work in this vein -- and perhaps its going to seed, since "C'est la Vie," the featured single, says little that "Still...You Turn Me On," from their previous album, didn't say better and shorter. Carl Palmer's side is the most accessible of the three solo sides for casual rock listeners, rocking hard on the classical adaptations and featuring Joe Walsh on lead guitar for one song. The group's two tracks, "Fanfare for the Common Man" and "Pirates," cover a lot of old ground, albeit in ornate and stylish fashion. Having used Copland's "Hoedown" as a concert showstopper for four years, the trio takes "Fanfare" to new heights of indulgence, and it actually works, up to a point -- like CCR's extended version of "Heard It Through the Grapevine," this is just a little too much of a good thing. ~ Bruce Eder Though no one talked about it at the time of its release, this album reflected a growing split within the group.
