Singing the Great American SongbookWhat is the Great American Songbook, also known as the "Popular Standards"?It is largely composed of songs written between 1920 and 1960 from the Tin Pan Alley era through the Broadway stages and sets ofHollywood musicals. This era represented a unique period in the history ofAmerican popular music. $13.89 The debut recording of the Trachy/Lacy Collective is cause for celebration. "Lanky" is a beautiful interweaving of musical sensibilities and personalities, a richly textured recording by an ensemble that balances spontaneity with precision, open improvisation with carefully crafted compositions. Indeed, these young musicians are mature beyond their years, having assimilated a wide variety of musical styles into the pieces that they present here. By turns, thoughtful, fiery, laid-back and swinging or open and exploratory, "Lanky" covers a wide range of emotions and styles. The music twists and turns, in a way that is unhurried and organic. A tune might begin as a swing tune, develop into a free improvisation with an afro-caribbean influence, and finish up with a traditional Art Blakey style shuffle chorus. "Lanky" is the work of players who have studied and absorbed the jazz tradition and who now are creating their own personal take on it. The tone of the record, while compelling, is marked by a sense of restraint and patience. There is a great deal of sensitivity among these players, who complement each other with subtle dexterity and poise. The music presented here is truly a collective, in which each of the four individuals get to stretch out and make significant contributions to the recording. The band, however, is spearheaded by its saxist Seth Trachy and drummer Evan Russell Lacy who together share the composing duties for this recording. The compositions are subtle and unpredictable, thoughtful explorations of an open palette of modern jazz sounds: from the changing meters of Trachy's "Bend" to Lacy's poignant ballad "Guten Tag" that closes the set. Lacy is a spare and economical drummer, whose consistent swinging approach drives the band through the music. He is a selfless player, who continually puts his playing at the service of the musical direction of each composition, a strong voice on the drums who never lets technique or bombast overwhelm the subtle balance of the music. Trachy an excellent tenor player who, in an unhurried way, subtly explores the material here. He seems to measure each note, creating solos of delicate majesty and stunning emotional power. "Lanky" is the more than the sum of its impressive parts. It is a gorgeous recoding that will reward repeated listening. With the future of jazz in the hands of these talented young players, it's sure to be a bright one.Saxophonist/composer Seth Trachy was raised on a farm in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and spent his childhood exploring the Appalachian wilderness and absorbing the soulful sounds of his father's record collection, including ...
