Mi Ley album
$7.79 Luis Miguel can always be counted on to deliver romance upon demand, with his trademark persuasive vocal style and luxurious musical arrangements. But with 2004's MEXICO EN LA PIEL, he breaks with tradition (at least on the title track), to acknowledge his fealty to his home country of Mexico. However, the album is by no means a set of patriotic ballads--Miguel remains as devoted to romance as ever on "De Que Manera Te Olvido," with the aid of stirring, passionate strings, and "Echame a Mi La Culpa," with its mariachi-flavored horns. His specialty is the pleading, broken-hearted lover, a role he plays with infectious enthusiasm on "Que Seas Feliz," but on "Un Mundo Raro," he acknowledges that love of one's country can exert a pull as strong as the love of another person. Miguel's lush, string- and horn-laden arrangements work their usual magic, and his expressive vocals exert their compelling power over the entirety of MEXICO EN LA PIEL.

| | Vicente Fernandez 35 Aniversario Lo Mejor De Lara CD (2002)
Mi Ley CD music
$7.75 35 ANIVERSARIO LO MEJOR DE LARA won the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Ranchero Album.
Agustin Lara was one of Mexico's great songwriters, and certainly one of the most widely recorded, in addition to composing songs for many Mexican films of the 1930s and '40s. While many have almost forgotten him in the last three decades, Vicente Fernández obviously hasn't. To celebrate his 35th year as a recording artist, he's put together a disc of the best of Lara's work -- at least in his eyes. Always a romantic, Fernández has gone for the big songs, with new, often lush arrangements that bring out the melodies but never swamp them. Of course, there's no danger of his big voice being crowded out. On songs like "Veracruz" and "Imposible" he's in complete control throughout, while he can also take a gentle piece like "Maria Bonita" and almost make it whisper, while the emotion ripples through "Amor de Mis Amores." It's an ideal marriage, really, because Lara was a writer who loved the sweep of passion, and that's always been at the core of Fernández's singing. And 35 years into his career, he proves he's still very much at the top of his game. ~ Chris Nickson

$7.98 | | Selena Amor Prohibido CD (1994) Bonus Tracks; Limited Edition; Remastered; Enhanced CD
Mi Ley music CDs
$5.99 AMOR PROHIBIDO was nominated for Best Mexican/American Album in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
Because it was a family thing, with sister Suzie Quintanilla on drums, brother A.B. on bass and their father Abraham leading the charge as manager, Selena and company made some of the most celebrated Tejano-pop ever on AMOR PROHIBIDO. This is the sugary album that made a star of the irresistible Texan diva.
Songs like "Amor Prohibido" and "El Chico Del Apartamento 512" are enduring anthems of young love, with simple, uplifting keyboards, driving synth-beats and of course, Selena's passionate, cheery singing. "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" is bouncing cumbia fun, with husband/guitarist Chris Perez offering a hot rock solo, while "Fotos y Recuerdos" is a spirited cover of the Pretenders' "Back on the Chain Gang." It's hard not to be saddened by the contrast between the upbeat sweetness of this music and Selena's untimely demise.

| | Apostadores Volver A Empezar CD (2008)
Mi Ley music CDs
$9.25 The theme for the Apostadores' album VOLVER A COMENZAR ("to start over") is just that: songs about starting over. "Era Mia" tells the story of lost love over a traditional lamenting, ranchera accordion, while the playful cumbia "Botellitas" ("little bottles") tells another tale of just how our lead singer recovers. Finally, "Esta Noche Voy a Verla" ends this album's ...
