| | Ray Davies Working Man's Cafe CD - Import Ray Davies Discography of CDs
The Kinks stopped being a working band in 1996, but it still took frontman Ray Davies another decade to release his first proper solo album. The follow-up, WORKING MAN'S CAFE, came along a relatively speedy two years later. Those who are familiar with latter-day Kinks recordings will recognize a sonic thread here, but while there are some moments that lean toward harder-edged rock, WORKING MAN'S CAFE is ultimately a singer-songwriter album, with the highly melodic, elegantly crafted tunes serving the intentions of Davies's lyrics.
As has been the case since the '60s, Davies focuses his attention on sociopolitical themes, delving into both the political and sociological aspects of modern life. He alternately laments one man's inability to affect global politics ("Listen to Me") and rails eloquently against the misdirection of international economic practices ("Vietnam Cowboys"). Of course, this being the man who wrote "Waterloo Sunset" and "Days," those concerns are couched in musical frameworks so appealing that they taste like candy going down.

Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e turns out loose melodies amid nimble bar-band grooves..." Entertainment Weekly (p.97) - "[With] a cache of Kinks-worthy melodies...[including] the gorgeous 'The Real World,' and 'You're Asking Me,' which could almost be a lost tune from the late '60s." Blender (Magazine) (p.97) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "When it comes to writing beautiful, wistfully nostalgic tunes, no one can top former Kinks frontman Ray Davies." Harp (magazine) (p.93) - "WORKING MAN'S CAFE is sharper and more direct, a reaching back to Davies' most biting social commentary and the pointed wit of prime Kinks days." Paste (magazine) (p.71) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Electric guitars crank for 'Peace In Our Time' and arpeggiate for 'Imaginary Man.' Horns add punch to 'Morphine Song.'" Working Man's Cafe Review

Working Man's Cafe
$19.10 NEVER A DULL MOMENT picks up where EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY left off. Here we have more raucous rock & roll with healthy dollops of soul and twang thrown in for good measure. Always looking for a good songwriter to cover, Stewart's honorees here include Jimi Hendrix ("Angel"), Dylan ("Mama You Been On My Mind"), and Rod's personal hero, Sam Cooke ("Twistin' The Night Away"). ...

| | Halford III: Winter Songs CD (2009) Special Edition; Digipak
Working Man's Cafe
$13.58 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches ...

| | Justin Bieber My World CD (2009) Enhanced CD
Working Man's Cafe
$7.96 Within a couple years, Canadian teenager Justin Bieber went from covering Usher on YouTube to working with Usher. An internet sensation from his renditions of several pop and pop-oriented R&B hits, he was still only 15 years old when he released this, his first album -- though it's more like an EP since it is contains only seven songs that are 25 minutes in duration. Given the comfort level he showed in the material he covered, My World plays it straight, based on the kind of age-appropriate content that would fill out a release from a younger Chris Brown or a junior version of Ne-Yo. Members of the Clutch, Midi Mafia, "Tricky" Stewart, Usher, and a handful of other notable ...
| | Rick Derringer Sky Is Falling CD (2009)
Working Man's Cafe
$8.80 Released on Fuel 2000, The Sky Is Falling is actually a reissue of the Doin' Business As... Derringer, Bogert & Appice album that was first released in Europe in 2001. In this short-lived power trio, guitarist and producer Rick Derringer reportedly "replaced" Jeff Beck in the "follow-up" to 1973's Beck, Bogert & Appice album (their rhythm section is, of course, made up of ex-Vanilla Fudge members bassist Tim Bogert and rock & roll über-drummer Carmine Appice. Nah. While this doesn't reach those lofty heights. Strictly out of its time and element -- from the songs to the production -- as a hard rock album with well-written compositions, excellent vocals, and musicianship, it works very well. Hearing the set in 2001 was just plain weird given what else was going on in popular music at the time. Hearing it in 2009 with its ...

Working Man's Cafe
$18.99 At long last. Bazerk, flagship member of the hip hop underground super group H.E.O.R.B. has finally dropped his feature length album "The Struggle-Based On A True Hip Hop Story". Those who have copped the 12" inch single from cdbaby already know the sheer power and talent of this gifted rap artist. First off, Bazerk employs Compton based "Beat Wizard" Baba Zoom for this undertaking with CLASSIC results. Bazerk's rhyme style is so "throwback" if you will and so clever that it just sounds new and refreshing to the ear. The tracks that Baba Zoom provides just takes the listener to a place in hip hop where TRUE hip hop purists long to be. Track no.3 "I Got U In Tha Zone" is a strong, thunderous jam that showcases Bazerk's unique flow. Hard drums and hardcore guitar strings clash with an abrasive rhyme style to form one of my favorite jams on the cd. Other notable cuts are "Pursuin", "Moment iz $", the chick friendly cuts "Can't Let U Go", "We Can Get Down" and the Divine Forces Radio jam that is simply mesmerizing. Bazerk also employs the talents of The 1st Lady Dutchess, 7th Sign cohorts ROE and Big Loc Thiese, ...
