| | Peter White Good Day CD (2009)
Studio 51 Club Sessions CD music
$14.95 Many people think of smooth jazz as something that didn't start until the 1980s, but arguably, smooth jazz started around 1966-1968 with the overtly commercial, pop-drenched albums that guitarist Wes Montgomery recorded during the last few years of his life. Love it or hate it, Montgomery's more commercial output had a major impact on Peter White and many other guitarists who have contributed to smooth jazz (including George Benson, Lee Ritenour, Earl Klugh, Chuck Loeb, and Henry Johnson). Musically, a lot has changed since the '60s, but the more things change in music, the more they inevitably stay the same -- and 2009 found White (like Montgomery 41, 42, and 43 years earlier) still struggling with a desire to improvise and a desire for mass acceptance (the thing that jazz, for the most part, lost after World War II). Of course, one doesn't necessarily rule out the another; the late saxophonist ...

| | La Nuit Mystique Aasverus CD (2008)
Studio 51 Club Sessions music CDs
A duo out of Milan, Italy, La Nuit Mystique successfully revert to a gothic style with medieval connotations, focussing on the figure of a storyteller, evoking ancient townscapes and bygone times when legends were passed on from generation to generation, long before humans elected consumerism as their guiding god, giving up their personal sensibilities in the process. The tale in question concerns Aasverus who, believe it or not, had a raw with Christ himself and ended up being doomed to eternal wandering as a result (well, even ...
| | Jiminy Bright Ideas CD (2008)
Studio 51 Club Sessions songs
$12.65 \"Bright Ideas.\" A fitting title for the first professional release from Saskatoon\'s Jiminy. As it becomes evident in even the six songs on the EP, this band is not short of ideas. Whether it is due to teeming creativity or just short attention spans, the band manages to travel in and out of Pop, Soul, Hip-Hop, Funk and Rock on \"Bright Ideas.\" Dually fronted by singer/songwriter Chad Reynolds, and rapper/songwriter Mark Ejack (who is also on drums), Jiminy has crafted a sound that is unabashedly catchy and appealing, ...

| | Tathagatta DNA/Rna CD (2009)
Studio 51 Club Sessions songs
$10.15 New project from members of Niagara Falls, Norman Fetter (ex-Golden Ball), Sam Cusumano, and Erich Breimhurst. Dreamy and evocative, theses slowly evolving soundscapes were spontaneously crafted with analog synths, hand- percussion, and circuit-bend electronics, as well as live sampling and looping. These pieces are both gut-wrenchingly crushing, and softly meditative, and focus on the search for sound as much as the sound itself. Like a new hybrid of ambient and noise, nestled somewhere between Oval and early Tangerine Dream, DNA/RNA is perfect for meditation, baby making, and/or yoga. For Tathagatta, Sam Cusumano moves out of his roles of recording engineer and mixer, and adds tones from hand-made, circuit bent children’s toys and thrift ...
