(6 Customer Reviews)
Not simply a crooner with a great voice, Anthony Hamilton is also a multi-talented songwriter, arranger, and producer in the tradition of visionary, self-directed artists like Donny Hathaway, Bill Withers, and Curtis Mayfield. THE POINT OF IT ALL is the North Carolina native's fourth proper full-length and it finds Hamilton comfortably ensconced in the same blend of organic instrumental textures, preprogrammed drum loops, and warm `70s soul signifiers that served him so well on 2005's AIN'T NOBODY WORRYIN'. The album's lead single, "Cool," is propelled by a deep bass-drum thump, supplemented by bright guitar arpeggios, an understated Fender Rhodes riff, and layer after layer of Hamilton's skillfully interwoven vocal tracks. The cumulative effect brings to mind the adventurous studio tinkering of late-period Marvin Gaye and the warm, neo-soul aesthetic pioneered by the likes of Atlanta's Organized Noize. All told, THE POINT OF IT ALL stands as another solid offering from one of contemporary R&B's most reliable craftsmen.Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Hamilton still has a Seventies jones. But his real calling card is solace, emotional and musical..." Spin (p.79) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[M]inor-key piano plaints, warm horn lines, and funky, shuffling beats maintain the spare, organic vibe..." Entertainment Weekly (p.61) - "[A] smart mix of programmed beats and churchy keyboards, and a voice that bridges seduction and gospel fervor." Billboard (p.39) - "He poignantly shifts into Smokey Robinson falsetto on the moving confessional 'Please Stay.' And the spare, yet powerful title track is worth the price of the CD alone." Point Of It All album
$9.59 After the success of his 2003 album, COMIN' FROM WHERE I'M FROM, R&B/soul singer Anthony Hamilton followed up in earnest during 2005, first with a collection of previously unreleased tunes, SOULIFE, and then with another new studio record, AIN'T NOBODY WORRYIN'. This latter disc truly solidifies Hamilton's sterling reputation; it's an utterly confident outing that nods to 1970s soul music without being beholden to the style of that era. In fact, Hamilton's deft balancing of both vintage soul and contemporary production is what helps the expressive vocalist stand out in the crowd. Rather than calling up his R&B/rap peers for guest shots, Hamilton largely goes in alone on this solid record, allowing superstar producer Mark Batson and others to create organic backdrops that perfectly showcase his undeniable talent.

| | Ne-Yo Year Of The Gentleman CD (2008)
Point Of It All CD music
$10.85 The R&B singer, songwriter, producer, and all-around hit-making machine known as Ne-Yo works his magic yet again on YEAR OF THE GENTLEMAN. Different from your average R&B crooner of the day, Ne-Yo backs away from overt sexuality, instead aiming for subtle romantic ballads that vary from playful innocence to brooding melancholy. Lead single "Closer" is unique as Ne-Yo works his silky smooth voice over a poppy house track. Overall, YEAR OF THE GENTLEMAN is consistent in this respectfully seductive approach to the fairer sex. In "Nobody," an awed Ne-Yo sings the praises of his love interest--"Can't nobody strut like her/Can't nobody touch her"--and the second single, "Miss Independent" is as close to a feminist anthem as the R&B genre has come in years. Production work comes from Polow da Don, Stargate, Chuck Harmony, Stereotypes, and Ne-Yo himself.

| | Jamie Foxx Intuition CD (2008)
Point Of It All songs
$9.99 Though his singing career has largely taken a back seat to his hugely successful run at the box office (starring in Oscar-winning roles such as 2004's RAY), Jamie Foxx has had his feet planted in both artistic camps since his seldom-heard 1994 debut, PEEP THIS. Continuing his breakout 2005 album UNPREDICTABLE's seductive blend of romantic R&B-balladry and smooth bedroom jams, INTUITION finds Foxx upping the tempos and electronic treatments, with the intent of translating his hit-making formula for club audiences. Enlisting a Grammy-pedigreed cast of producers and guest artists, including T.I., Lil Wayne, and T-Pain, the album benefits from its star-studded rotation of guest spots--serving as able hype-men or nimble rhymesmiths on material that could, otherwise, have been fairly middling relationship fodder. On the lead single, "Just Like Me," Foxx's smooth, synthetic croon rides confidently over an appealingly bouncy melodic hook while T.I.'s roughneck swagger provides gritty contrast. While INTUITION lacks some of the immediate pleasures of Foxx's Kanye West-produced collaboration with Twista, "Slow Jamz," it still packs ...
