Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." Even the stuttering splices on "Telephone," a duet with Beyoncé, leans to the other side of the Atlantic, which just emphasizes the otherness that's become Gaga's calling card. In April 2004 my husband and I traveled to Chile to visit our son Luke who was living in Santiago. This trip was planned to be either respite or recovery for us as my Mother was dying of cancer. We had spent many months caring for this exceptional woman who was herself the musical daughter of Vaudeville performers. We were weary with the day in day out care, but honored to go the distance with her. On April 10, 2004, she passed on and after her life was joyously celebrated, we went on our next adventure. We knew she would want us to keep exploring. The starkness and beauty of Chile was breathtaking. We drove up the entire coast to the Atacama desert. I was trying desperately to heal, but my heart felt so hollow and lonely. The solitude and the rhythm of the car brought me back to my musical roots. I had not written an original tune in many years, but suddenly felt this melody engulf me and my mother\'s energy filling me up with the need to sing. We rotated driving, two hours on, four hours off, and once my driving turn was over I flew into the back seat of our rental car looking for a piece of paper. Just half a year from the release of the mysteriously unauthorized catalog clearinghouse/label kiss off Murder Was the Case, Gucci Mane returns with The State vs. Radric Davis, his latest on Warner Bros.' Asylum imprint. True to form, the bling-loving rapper brings the club-ready Dirty South rap, complete with trunk-rattling bass and trademark synths. Featuring production by Drumma Boy, Mannie Fresh, Shawty Redd, and Scott Storch, amongst others, it's no surprise that the album is able to perfectly capture the low and slow Southern sound. Some of the best beats come by way of Bangladesh (producer on the Lil Wayne single "A Milli"), who drops some seriously roll slowing Atlanta heat on "Stupid Wild" and "Lemonade." The all-star roster doesn't just stop on the production side. Soulja Boy Tell `Em, Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, and Bun B (as well as countless others) drop in with guest verses, culminating in an album that's so jam-packed with Dirty South royalty that it almost feels a little light on Gucci Mane. While the galaxy of guest stars has become commonplace in the rap world, it's Gucci's solo songs that paint a picture of what the rapper is really like, peeling back the veneer of excess to reveal an artist who has been affected by his past. On "Worst Enemy," a song that touches on the rapper's 2005 legal troubles, Gucci looks to stay focused on his future as he closes out the hook with "I don't turn around no mo', I look at what's in front of me/I'm focused on the future `cause yesterday is history." The ominous Shawty Redd-produced "Heavy" feels like the rapper is looking back and realizing he might be in over his head, with Gucci alternating verses about guns, cash, and drugs with a hook where he laments "My ego getting too big, it's too heavy/My head getting too big, it's too heavy," as if he's asking ...
