One of the last fervent flag-wavers of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, Saxon unleashes its 18th studio release. One of the most dynamic and epic albums of the band's career, INTO THE LABYRINTH combines the Deep Purple-meets-AC/DC barroom rock with progressive, near-Teutonic metal anthems. The elements that truly make the album special are Biff Byford's laid-back, swaggering vocal style and Charlie Bauerfeind's (Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray) rich production. INTO THE LABYRINTH closes with a stripped-down, bluesy rendition of the fan favorite "Coming Home," the original version of which appeared on 2001's KILLING GROUND.
It's safe to assume that when Saxon's original lineup was formed in Barnsley, England back in 1977, the last thing that singer Biff Byford and guitarist Paul Quinn were thinking about was a 31st anniversary. Metal bands come and go, and it is hard enough to keep a band together for two or three years -- let alone 31. But 2008, the year in which Saxon recorded their early 2009 release, Into the Labyrinth, did, in fact, mark the band's 31st anniversary -- and the good news is that this 50-minute CD is quite faithful to the spirit of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Those who have been closely following Saxon all these years know that their work has been wildly inconsistent at times; they showed tremendous promise in the beginning but didn't fare nearly as well when they tried to sound like a glossy Sunset Strip hair band in the mid- to late '80s. But the Nirvana/Pearl Jam/grunge upheaval of 1991-1993 booted hair bands off of MTV, and instead of either continuing with hair metal or attempting to go alternative, Saxon returned to their NWOBHM roots. The result: a lot of mid- to late-'90s and 2000s recordings that weren't groundbreaking but definitely found Saxon sounding revitalized. Into the Labyrinth fits that description; this disc doesn't pretend to point the veteran headbangers in any new directions, but Saxon's 2008 lineup (Byford on lead vocals, Quinn and Doug Scarratt on guitar, Nibbs Carter on bass, and Nigel Glockler on drums) sound like they are having considerable fun whether they are providing anthemic power metal of the Judas Priest/Iron Maiden variety ("Valley of the Kings," "Battalions of Steel") or going for more of an AC/DC-ish crunch ("Live to Rock," "Slow Lane Blues"). This album falls short of essential, but even so, fans of NWOBHM -- era favorites like Strong Arm of the Law (1980) and Denim and Leather (1981) will appreciate the NWOBHM leanings of the enjoyably consistent Into the Labyrinth. ~ Alex HendersonKerrang (Magazine) (p.56) - "When you hear searing opener 'Battalions Of Steel' paired with fist-raising singalong-ready second track 'Live To Rock' you're already preparing yourself for the best Saxon album in years."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The building, rhythmic, choir-like intro to opener 'Battalions Of Steel' soon shifts into classic speed metal with a nod to Manowar."

5 stars Saxon never lets me down!
I was listening to the song Demon Sweeney Todd from the new release Into The Labyrinth and my 14 year old son asked if it was Dragonforce. Personally I'm not a fan of that band, but I think that says something about Saxon after all of these years. Yes, they still rock like true Dogs Of War! From start to finish Into The Labyrinth holds it's own against anything being played today on rock radio. Well done men! Continue to crush the masses like a Solid Ball Of Rock!

4 stars Another fantasic album
Into the Labyrinth is Saxon's 18th studio album and there is no let down on this current release. A very good follow up from what I think was one of their best albums 'The Inner Sanctum'. They continue to make strong solid material and this one won't dissapoint. 'Into the Labyrinth' will make any Saxon fan proud!!

5 stars Like All Saxon Cd's - Play Loud To Enjoy!
"Into The Labyrinth" is yet again another Saxon cd all you fans will want to add to your collection. This cd is similar to the band's last effort "The Inner Sanctum" but even better. The twin lead guitar attack is amazing. Singer Peter "Biff" Byford's vocals are in my opinion the best of this genre. There isn't a bad song on this cd. A must have for heavy metal lovers.

This set is an outstanding new effort - a soon to be classic recording that kicks off with vintage heavy metal tracks, followed by some of their best classic hard rock'n'roll numbers, and continuing with several epic metal songs. Saxon: Biff Byford (vocals); Doug Scarratt, Paul Quinn (guitar); Nigel Glockler (keyboards); Nibbs Carter.
Personnel: Rolf Koehler, Olaf Senkbeil (background vocals).
Saxon led the charge in what would become known as the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (a movement that inspired countless longhairs to go loud, fast, and heavy). With 2007's THE INNER SANCTUM, the Yorkshire natives prove that they are as vital as ever--even 30-plus years after their formation. Original members Biff Byford (vocals) and Paul Quinn (guitar) are joined on this set by one-time GTR drummer Nigel Glockler, guitarist Doug Scarratt, and bassist Nibbs Carter.

Initial pressings of GOOD TO BE BAD included a bonus disc containing 7 live tracks and a video.
Issued more than a decade after Whitesnake's previous studio outing, 2008's GOOD TO BE BAD finds frontman David Coverdale leading a band of new hard-rock recruits. Easily one of the heaviest albums recorded by the blooze-leaning British act, the album benefits from Coverdale's well-weathered vocals and the twin guitar work of Doug Aldrich (Dio) and Reb Beach (Winger, Dokken), as evinced on the fierce opener, "Best Years."
Good to Be Bad marks Whitesnake's 30th anniversary as a band -- though frontman David Coverdale is the only original member. It's their first studio album since 1998's Restless Heart, which was never released in the United States. The current incarnation of Whitesnake is Coverdale, guitarists Doug Aldrich and Reb Beach, bassist Uriah Duffy, keyboardist Timothy Drury, and drummer Chris Frazier. Frazier is the band's newest member; the others appeared on 2006's ...

Michael Schenker is truly a legend. From helping form the Scorpions to his stint with UFO, his guitar prowess has been electrifying from the beginning. This brand new recording perfectly captures the MSG aesthetic and mystique, which makes sense as 4/5ths of the original MSG are back in the fold! Singer Gary Barden, drummer Simon Phillips and keyboardist Don Airey join Schenker and bassist Neil Murray for one of their best (and most highly anticipated) recordings and a return to classic MSG form. Pushing the boundaries of hard rock, heavy metal and blues rock to the limits which his old fans love and which will impress a wide range of new fans. Michael Schenker: Gary Barden (vocals); Don Airy (keyboards); Neil Murray (bass guitar); Simon Phillips (drums).
